TFA: 21 WOMEN WHO SHOULD HAVE HAD NUMBER ONE SINGLES IN AMERICA BETWEEN 1987 AND 2008 JUST LIKE THE TITLE OF THIS PIECE SUGGESTS.

and

Sam Fox: Could have been a US no.1: "Touch Me (I Want Your Body)" was a fascinating glimpse of what Madonna could have achieved had she teamed up with Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

That came out in 1986.

/so did Kim Wilde's version of "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which was her last US #1.

While I agree with some, I'm saddened by the fact that Lush wasn't good enough to rate a mention. Not by the author, but because they just weren't. I still liked em.

The reason half these bints didn't crack the US charts is because their material was half-baked, over-produced, derivative crap. We've got plenty of our own warblers putting out this kind of stuff, the US doesn't need to import any more off-key hacks.

That being said: PJ Harvey, yeah. I'd also vote for Imogene Heap and Beth Orton.

No love for Kate Nash? I heard "Foundations" just a few weeks ago and I can't get it out of my head. Her cockney accent (?) just rocks my world.

/Kudos for the Kate Bush inclusion and Lily Allen too

Imogene Heap and PJ Harvey are both very good. Love PJ Harvey, through was a bit disappointed in her last album, White Chalk.

Currently listening to R.E.M.'s Fables of the Reconstruction

Laura Marling should be on that list

I liked them too, but I can think of any number of female-fronted bands from the UK that deserved a #1 hit more...Portishead, The Sundays, Morcheeba, Elastica, heck, even The Pipettes.

/mmm...The Pipettes.

That was the first whole album of hers I really liked.

I remember Charlotte Church from when I was like 14 and used to go browse music in the store. Of course back then she was more of a classical singer!

I love it when Brits get upset when we adopt one of their own into our culture, and then complain we didn't choose the right one...

...and then tell us one of them should've been a solo Spice Girl. *headshake*

I've been disappointed in everything she's done post-To Bring You My Love.

PJ Harvey's "Stories from the City/Stories from the Sea" is my all-time favorite album. Anyone checking my iTunes will note that by play count my actual favorite album is Imogen Heap's "Speak for Yourself." (Note: I listened to "Stories" for years before I downloaded iTunes.)

So, I'm really pleased to see the two getting random Farker props, even if some are tinged with music snobbery. I'm a guy who believes great artists can keep getting better as they mature (post-epic LP experimental albums are fun change-of-pace works), and a bit of gloss in production can't hurt (just don't neuter the damn thing like R.E.M.'s "Around The Sun") - but I respect the elitism that comes in loving early, raw albums, as they have much charm of their own.)

'PJ Harvey on Tour: Please Leave Quietly' is unusual for rockumentary because it is actually watchable.
FWIW, she and Bono have the same voice coach.

Leona who?

On second thought, forget it.

Kate Bush. Yes - but she's been number one in my heart since 1985 and I don't give a fark if no one else in America has any taste.

PJ Harvey rocks. I have not had the chance to listen to White Chalk, but I look forward to it.

I am surprised that Thea Gilmore isn't getting any props. What's with that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTqrlICtayM

(Not really a video, just a static image, but the music is there)
