(Reuters) Unlikely China will not punish a group of Tibetan monks for disrupting a government-organized foreign media tour. Definitely won't take them out back by the bins for a kicking, honestly   (reuters.com) divider line 33

They're just gonna f*ck up other stuff until they voluntarily set themselves on fire. It's more fun that way anyway.

As long as they actually pay for their own gasoline, and does not cause destruction upon the People's property, that would be acceptable.

It's good to see China start behaving more civilized. If they didn't, then we'd have to send our president over there to talk to them. And the last time he did that, he failed harder than a damaged spy plane.

They are only acting with restraint because they know the eyes of the World are upon them, and that if they do too much it will cast a pall over the Olympics, and they certainly don't want to be embarassed.

Let's see what happens in the Fall, after the Olympics.

What they should do is dowse themselves, hug a CPC official, then light up.

well technically the Revolutionary War was an uprising and our Founding Fathers were rebel/terrorists.

of course China isn't going to roll over and admit wrongdoing..

but at least the pressure of the olympics may help change some things..

What I find really amusing is that....

Just as all this "spontaneous" stuff is starting to happen in Tibet, the US is losing control of Iraq. Not that it could be related in any way right? I mean, it's not as if the CIA has a virtually unlimited budget and can orchestrate whatever they want anywhere in the World, to draw attention away from another clusterfark somewhere else...

Nahhhh....

*Adjusts tinfoil hat*

T.H.I.S. Once the Olympics are over and there's no spotlight on them, they're gonna crack down like there's no tomorrow.

Approves.

Just a side note, Hilldog was a corprate lawyer for WalMart before she was first lady. During Billy's first run for office, there where many questionable and shady donations from Chinese banks and "budhist temples" to the Clinton campaign. By amazing coincidence, during the Clinton presidency, China got classified as a "most favored nation" in trade status, despite their multiple human rights violations. Now WalMart has cheep labor from a communist country and can make things cheeper than anyone else. I am sure those are completely unrealated.

Hilldog is WalMart's beyotch.
China is still an oppresive society.
The monks are screwed.

Strange, I've spent all these years believing that the U.S. was a signatory to the GATT agreement, and favoured all other GATT signatories equally to the status of "Most favoured nation", in accordance to the agreement.

jdmac 2008-03-28 11:35:31 AM
Actually, China did not have "most favored nation" status with the US government until the Clinton administration due to human right violations such as Teinaman square.

But by all means, keep rewriting history.

Tibetan monks want Chinese officials to try to take them out back.

The Tibetans should get support from the Revolutionary Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist). Boy, that would be ironic.

I have no doubt these guys are going to silently disappear soon, or brutally disappear after the Olympics.

I would like to know more. I've always been peeved at China getting "Most Favored Nation", I'm curious to see what sort of justification is there.

I just had the biggest headdesk-moment of my life.

The GATT states that the benefits extended to any one member of GATT as MFN, should be extended to all signatories of GATT. The U.S. is a signatory, China, however, was not... They became a WTO member in 2001, and automatically obtained the same status as any other GATT signatory.

Basically, prior to 2001, China could've had a completely different status than any other GATT-signatory/WTO-member the U.S. had any dealings with, for better or worse. At the moment, however, China and all other WTO members are to be treated equal with regards to tariffs, taxing, customs and so on.

Meh. Doesn't really matter to me. If I'm prolonging his AW so be it. As long as we can curtail the amount of pics involving homeschool wife's teeth.

Ah, forgive my ignorance. My bias against the current Chinese government only brought the status name to my attention, and not it's significance. I have no idea of the actual meaning of MFN.

Time to research, it be.

Where's Kwai Chiang Caine when you need him? Or even Masters Po and Han?

The traditional meaning of MFN, is pretty much an IR BFF.

Basically, it means that the nation(s) regarded as MFN will have lower tariffs, lower tax-barriers and so on. Basically a 15% tax on imports from MFN, compared to 30% tax on imports from the rest.
