Needs more Peter Gabriel.

Needs more Steve Hackett.

To sound like a record skip....I agree with the above. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway had some soul. He's always been a bit more about color.... sometimes that came through. Genesis dwindled down to a big let down for me personally when they went formula top 40.

For the majority of the band's existence, Genesis has totally and completely sucked.

With his lack of facial movement he should have been a bass player...

I met Tony Banks on the street in Philadelphia last year. He was affable, but just as expressionless in person.

It's not his fault he's autistic.

Tony Banks, and Genesis as a whole is awesome. Go watch his performances on Home By The Sea, There Must Be Some Other Way, Fading Lights, The Brazilian, Los Endos, In The Cage, etc. The man is a wizard. I'm glad I had the pleasure of watching him perform last September.

/Gabriel & Hackett-only fans can suck it.

Only when he's not playing. When he's behind the keyboards he's got that Mariano Rivera poker face on.

Of course, when he gets back to the hotel room it's a whole other story. There's 30 hookers, ten cases of Dom, and a truckload of explosives for starters.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Nice call Subby

I love Gabriel-era Genesis and Collins-era Genesis for different reasons. That said, I thought Collins handled the older stuff about as well as he could've on their tour this summer. There's only one Peter Gabriel though. He has an unmatched passion when he sings.

And here it is. (new window)

Collins' love ballads? Gag.

THIS.

Of course, for all the complaining Gabriel-only fans do about how Phil "ruined" Genesis when they went commercial, you never hear them say a word about Peter's solo career. How odd.

StBC 2008-03-27 01:54:51 PM
Lots of great stuff in those older Genesis records. And Chester is a great drummer, too.

Gulper Eel [TotalFark] 2008-03-27 03:04:27 PM
Genesis didn't go commercial - the music industry finally caught up to them at the same time they were tightening up their material. I'd take my band in a different direction too if I saw everybody else in my genre go into the shiatter rehashing the same stuff they'd done six years before. Genesis made the leap and it paid off bigtime.

There are plenty of old Genesis songs that could've been singles, but the band didn't have a look that curried favor with the coked-up disco sheep in the music business, especially in the US. "Carpet Crawlers" and "Afterglow" could've been hits easily if the suits weren't busy chasing the next Shaun Cassidy.

KingKauff 2008-03-27 04:29:20 PM
The piano and keyboard solos on "Firth of Fifth" are some of my all time favorite solos. Give em a listen, you'll like what you hear, especially when segued into Hackett's ripping solos (especially on Seconds Out- possibly one of the best live albums ever).

While many hate 80s Genesis, I think it was clearly apparently that as the 70s wore on they were running out of prog ideas. Neither A Trick of the Tail or Wind and Wuthering lived up to the three preceeding albums, while they were decent they were too laid back too soft, missing that energy Peter Gabriel brought to the band. And Then There Were Three was even worse, it just sounded like they ran out of ideas. Duke while more poppy, was much more lively than anything they did since Peter left.

Happy birthday Tony.

Hey, that's an actual facial expression at 3:46 or so. Still nothing from when he's actually playing, though.

He sings, too. As good as he is on the keys, that's how bad his singing voice is.

I've been listening to a lot of early Genesis lately, something I never got into for the longest time.

There's a lot of good writing in there, like "Squonk" and the last minutes of "Supper's Ready" - but, like a lot of prog (especially British prog), there's enough cheese to make them a once-in-a-while listening experience. "In that Quiet Earth" is a great tune to listen to on the way to work, though.

I like a lot of Banks' sounds, too. That chorus-ey organ sound is really nice, and he managed to get a great tone out of the CS80 Electric Grand, which I normally hate the sound of.

So his parts weren't flashy runs of early Wakeman lore, or Novello's pounding staccato riffs from a Niacin record, but I like to think of him as the David Gilmore of 70s keyboarding; sometimes less is more.

I'm going to go listen to some Glass Hammer now ...

Thanks for the vid, subby!

I like Tony's voice, but there's just no variation. Just the same key throughout.

I maintain that Mike never really sang on Acting Very Strange. It was Elvis Costello in an uncredited session gig.

Mike and Tony sounded fine singing backup on the last Genesis tour...it added just the right extra touch to the "Carpet Crawlers" finale. I don't know what the hell happens on their solo albums, but they've been very smart to let somebody else do the singing. What's odd is that Tony sounds completely different on the few bits of Genesis songs where you can hear him singing - that's his voice singing "hello friend welcome home" at the end of "A Trick of the Tail".

I agree. I find their backing vocals to be much better than what's offered on the studio albums. Really makes the songs come alive.
