Stay relevant?

Just from reading the description I know this is going to suck. The poor quality of J-dorama is the only thing keeping me from watching it, which is probably holding me back in my language studies.

And for those of you who are going to claim higher moral ground because your band would never do such a thing, Radiohead and Duran Duran have licensed their songs as the ending and opening themes for anime in the last 2-3 years, so this is nothing new.

Barring the age requirement, I think my 6-year-old neighbor at home is as qualified as the retard we have now.

Actually it's not a bad thing in Japan to have your song opening or closing a show (or to have it as a commercial campaign song) - they're often the biggest songs of the year, done by popular artists.

Show homepage (new window). Hard to say if it'll be good or not. The descriptions they give of dramas often don't give you any idea of the tone of the show (serious drama? semi-farce? hyper- realism?). It'll be popular because of Kimutaku. I don't think he's any good at humour so I'm guessing it'll be a serious drama.

The poor quality of J-dorama is the only thing keeping me from watching it, which is probably holding me back in my language studies.

You just have to accept J-dorama for what it is. Japanese TV is not like Western TV: it's a different mindset. You can't approach it as if it's the same as Western TV, but in a different language.

J-dorama is largely based on manga, and intentionally silly or overblown (like Ikebukuro West Gate Park, Kisarazu Cats Eye, Hanazakari no Kimitachi e, Hana Yori Dango, Dragon Zakura), or it's ridiculously sentimental.

I usually download the first two or three episodes of all of the new dramas every season to see if they're any good, as it's impossible to get a sense of what the show will be like from the website.

"Bara no Nai Hanaya (薔薇のない花屋)" was good this season, as was "Ashiata no, Kita Yoshio (あしたの、喜多善男)". "Saito-san (斉藤さん)" was funny.

For recent seasons try "Iryu (医龍)" (two seasons) and "Haikei, Chichiue-sama (拝啓、父上様)". Older maybe "Shin Hoshi no Kinka (新・星の金貨)", "Kimi ni Oshierareta Koto (君に教えられたこと)", "Beautiful Life".

You don't have to watch dorama though - you could watch the infotainment shows like Sekai no Hate Made Itte Q!, Tensai! Shimura Doubutsuen or even SMAPxSMAP (Will Smith was very funny on this show), or music talk shows like MUSIC FIGHTER and Utaban

The best place to find dorama is clubbox. If you want Japanese TV shows and you don't know how to use clubbox... well, you're screwed.

And yet, so appropriate to a thread on Madonna. How interesting.

You win some, you lose some. My screwdrivers and margaritas said I won, even if I look like an idiot for it. :)
