So.... basically, she's got training wheels for her voice.

Neat.

I always thought producers just threw Brit in a bag with a couple of rabid squirrels and stuck a mic in there.

Jebus! The poor squirrels ;)

She's not the only one.

/worked on a recording session for a number one single that did not have much in the way of band members singing on it. My first clue was when I saw a white girl in the clip as lead singer, when a large black lady did the vocal. Ditto for the backing vocals.

KrustAsian 2008-03-25 06:33:30 AM
While everyone knows Britney's voice requires large amounts of "studio magic," I disagree it's some "older black lady" co-singing Britney's lines. The phrasing is way too contemporary for someone older than 30 to be singing.

Maybe Henry Rollins forgot what decade this was and thought we were talking about C&C Music Factory or something.

Pussy Cat Dolls made no secret of this.

The phrasing is way to contemporary for someone over 30 to sing? Do you actually believe that? What does that even mean?

A talented and seasoned vocalist, AKA a session singer like they're implying here, could sing anything from Opera to T-Pain -- that's their job.

What exactly is so difficult or contemporary about the 2-note phrase: 'give give me, give me give, give me more'?

I saw Henry in Nanaimo, BC on friday. It was great. It was second time I've seen him on this spoken word tour and half the material in it was new. the same friggin' tour. damn that guy can talk.

There is no obscurity on Fark.

Especially if it's also a Shatner reference.

Britney sux. She's never going to be as good as Paula Abdul!

/I keed. I keed.
//Abdul had some of the WORST voice-overs in the business. If you listen closely, you can actually distinguish 2 or 3 other voices.

But the problem there is you have to listen...closely....to a Paula Abdul song?

Point well taken. I was a teen at the time and the girlfriend liked Abdul. The desire for nookie gave way to listening to her.

Antares Autotune doesn't even begin to cover what those poor engineers have to do to make her sound like that...

The engineers on Britney and Ashley Simpson albums are geniuses, imagine trying to spin gold out of dog shiat...

Third_Uncle_Eno 2008-03-25 12:37:57 PM
LOL... i think i actually have that late 80's Paula Abdul cd somewhere.... the one with that "straight up" song then that some song about a snake or something. i don't think i've listened to it since like 1992 or something [it was my parents]

but anyway.... i always thought that Britney's voice was/is, rather thin, with not much range.... maybe i could see her double tracking her voice [hey...John Lennon did that for a lot of the Beatles songs he sang on... as well as his solo stuff]
but i kinda doubt about that whole Britney plus black woman thing.... crazy Rollins

/ps. the only Black Flag record I have is "Damaged".
// I think it's F***ing hilarious that Rollins was an Ice Cream store manager before he joined Black Flag. bwahahahahaha

There's an amazing amount of talent that goes into a Britney Spears album... it's just that none of it actually comes from Britney Spears.

Melodyne is a hell of a drug...a powerful, powerful drug.

Voiceover work like this isn't uncommon and happens a lot more often than you'd think. Multiple tracks to make one sound happens in nearly all aspects of sound design and recording, though you "see" it more often in guitars than anything else.

Or, Mr. Rollins, it's what they used to which was essentially double it, then tune it slightly higher and then slightly lower to "seem" more in tune overall. I like how this is viewed as more ethical than overly melodyning a vocal to death (or to "Switchfoot" level).

Hey now, i was definately not dissing him... i just thought it was kinda interesting/funny/odd how he went from being an Ice cream store manager to a punk-rock leader/singer.
Two very different occupations... almost opposites, really.
kind of like going from Clown to gravedigger, or from Hairdresser to Jail Security officer.

Zombie Eater 2008-03-25 04:18:42 PM
There is no "feel" with Britney, so I don't know what he's talking about there. He's been in the industry long enough to know that this is a big "duh". He's also forgotten about the Antares auto tune devices, doubling (tripling, quad, etc.), multiple takes, etc. that are employed. It's more than just bringing in "this older black woman".

zunkus 2008-03-25 05:06:57 PM

Okay...just making sure...;)

Me loves Henry!

corscariqua 2008-03-25 06:09:38 PM
I kinda want to shoot myself for doing this, but after reading that, I had to listen to a couple of her songs to see if I could hear what he was talking about.

Conclusion: Yes, I can hear a voice other than hers, and the other voice has more depth than hers. However, I can't tell if it's another person, over-processing, or both. With that being said, during the chorus of that Hit Me Baby One More Time song I can hear at least 6 different vocal tracks. That's just farking sad.

WookieBopShuffle 2008-03-25 07:05:52 PM
Hilarious. So what about multi-track recording doesn't come under the heading of "artificially enhanced"? What technique has not been used by some critically aclaimed (you might even agree) msuician? It's all fair game. But not everything that is enhanced started as music.

Autotune is used everywhere. The best know when to use it and when to leave it out. Double-tracking is used everywhere. Everything is everywhere. My point is that some recordings you like has something you would totally trash were some other artist (who you hate)'s producer/engineer to use it.

There's no need to find a reason to despise Britney's "music". It just sucks, mostly because it never started out as music. It started out as product.

/it's more a hatred of her audience...
//and the co-opting of music by the industry
///just listened to "Funk Pop n' Roll by XTC - perfect.

Britney Spears albums are the result of the porn star singing along with the cheesy porn music.

That is all.

That being said, Henry Rollins could do whatever the fark he wanted to me. ANYTHING. I'm talking shiat that could get me disowned permanently. That's saying a lot, because I'm in a family of whores.

Sounds like the author of this article is looking to get ass-bred by Henry Rollins. Clue: I could be wrong, but my guess is that he doesn't swing that way, ladyboy.

musicky 2008-03-25 08:54:06 PM
I've been learning ALL this stuff since I'm taking audio engineering/production classes. It's a huge musical turnoff. I enjoy an occasional well-executed pop song but between the loudness war, data compression, and the autotune/quantization abuse I've become completely burnt out creatively.
