the one that drowned, dennis wilson, actually surfed and was probably the most musically talented composer asides from brian in the band.

brian tours now with his own band, and does pet sounds and smile live. it's a fantastic show.

Strong men have been known to weep when they read the Billboard charts and realize that "Kokomo" was the most commercially successful Beach Boy song.

Now, I am not here to defend Mike Love, the douchebag doesn't deserve the free ride. In all fairness however, the steaming heap of crap that is Kokomo was actually written by Papa John Phillips.

I just came here to say that i like Mike Love a lot and think he was an intricate part of the band.... Just kidding, he's a giant douche.

The Beach Boys today are like the Village People. The audience really doesn't care who the members are and if they are original members at all. The audience just cares that the people who take the stage sing the songs they remember in tune and dress the part.

To best illustrate the difference between Mike Love and Brian Wilson, consider their responses to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy:

Brian Wilson offered to personally call anyone who made a contribution over a certain number (I believe it was $100) and match the donation. If you donated to the relief effort using Wilson's website, within a few hours your phone would be ringing and you'd be talking to the man who wrote Pet Sounds.

Mike Love, on the other hand, sued Brian Wilson for using the Beach Boys name to promote relief efforts.

So, bottom line here, and Brian Wilson is too polite to say it: motherf*ck a Mike Love.

Don't sweat it. A lot of great music has been made since he composed that album. I have the Pet Sounds Box Set and i do love the album. I like Smile too but the draw to that album was building up for years as the Unreleased Opus! of Wilson. It just HAD to be totally awesome. Pet Sounds was innovative in its time and influential for many pop artists. That's not to say you have to like it. Just nod and smile when you hear a couple hipsters slobbering all over Brian and the albums. Then tell them you prefer the more guitar oriented "#1 Album" and "Radio City" by Big Star.

They now make a great-valued combo CD of those 2 albums, btw.

And it is titled "#1 Record"

It ain't the Beach Boys without Carl. He is missed.

The vocals on "God Only Knows" always give me goosebumps. The Beach Boys were always Brian, Carl, and Dennis. Mike and Al----could have been any two marginally talented guys.
