I've always said that Ringo Star is the luckiest drummer on the planet.

bingethinker [TotalFark] 2008-03-23 03:29:24 PM
Uh, no PeteBestmitter. There are other recordings of Ringo playing with the band in Hamburg that have been available for 30 years. He sounds okay.

Did you really need the comma in the headline? Couldn't it just have been "Ringo was such a bad drummer that the Beatles are suing to stop the release of tracks when he first joined the band"?

VRaptor117: Did you really need the comma in the headline? Couldn't it just have been "Ringo was such a bad drummer that the Beatles are suing to stop the release of tracks when he first joined the band"?

Wow. I've seen people complain, about improper placing of a comma, but never about the actual, use of one.

nekom [TotalFark] 2008-03-23 03:35:09 PM
`The Beatles' are suing? Ummm of the ones who remain alive, Ringo comprises half.

Nice.

You see, it's this funny thing about headlines. They try to save space by replacing certain words with commas. Which is why you'll often see "Jim bought apples, oranges" instead of "Jim bought apples and oranges" in a headline.

I think of the comma as more of a pause. When said Ringo was such a bad drummer (comma) it gives the readers enough time to ask themselves "How bad was he?" like an old joke or gameshow.

Yes, it appears that, according to this headline, Ringo hates Ringo so much he doesn't want anyone to hear Ringo play.

This is actually a better sentence grammatically than the one you're proposing.

I have been saying it for years, Ringo is not fit to carry John Bonham's sticks.

Or Neil Peart's, or Stewart Copeland's...

Why the hell would Ringo want to join the Police? That'd be like asking Jonny Greenwood to quit Radiohead and join Matchbox 20.

Why would the police have him? Sting and Stewart's egos are too big for the stage already. At least they have some talent to back it up.

Ringo's ride cymbal in "Rain".
Ringo's toms in "Don't Pass Me By"

Two reasons why subby is an a*hole.

well. let it be known it was clapton playing on some of their early recordings too , not lennon. if you listen to the beatles tunes , none of the drumming is all that complex. ringo could keep a solid backbat and that is exactly what he did. cant ever remember him claiming to be the most techincal drummer ever.

carmody: Ringo is awesome. I never understood the hate.

People are just jealous that a mediocre drummer like him could get into one of the great bands of all time. There are many drummers better than him that won't be able to get a break nearly as good as that.

But you could also argue that though what he did with the Beatles was pretty simple, there's more to drumming than crazy solos and that what he did was right for the music.

Doctor Hooey 2008-03-23 04:12:26 PM
Ringo was THE PERFECT drummer for the Beatles. He does way more subtle stuff than people give him credit for, and pioneered a lot of styles that people still use. Not everyone is Neil Peart, thank GOD, nor should they be. Chops does not a great musician make.

Ringo is great. So is his kid.
Great music is not always about technical ability.

Case in point: Mike Portnoy and the rest of Dream Theater. That is some serious, bullshiat, no soul, music by the numbers.

Please Neil peart doesn't even read music... chops? He didn't get chops until he studied with a jazz guy in the late 90's. The only thing that guy was known for was the gigantic drumset. I'm not saying he isn't good, but there are people that play a 4 piece drum set that would blow the lid off of neil, and he would tell you the same.

jedimindtrick 2008-03-23 04:22:31 PM

AdolfOliverPanties [TotalFark] 2008-03-23 04:23:19 PM
Ringo is a very competent drummer. He's not great, but was perfect for the Beatles. None of them were monster virtuosos on their instruments (although there is some claim for Paulie being a brilliant bassist.) Some of George's early work in the band was rubbish, from a technical standpoint.

But what the Beatles realized (and apparently scores of Farkers do not) is that it was the music, the songs that mattered.

Anyone who gives a crap that Ringo didn't play in ridiculous time signatures with a 75-piece kit is a soulless asshat.
