With that size crew it was likely a factory ship.

/ a big rescue job for thinly stretched Coast Guard

the story is updated now to say 4 died, 43 recovered.

so sad.... I could never do that job...

One of those huge processing ships maybe?

I will never complain about the price when my wife orders the Alaskan crab after watching that show. Seriously dangerous work.

The price of fish sticks and fake crab meat are going to skyrocket now!

Before I clicked on the link, I assumed it was some new-fangled tv show about dating an inmate or serial killer or something.

I'd say I'm relieved, but... well...

This is the only profession in which a person hopes to come back from a business trip with crabs.

New Moon Rabbit 2008-03-23 06:54:25 PM
My brother-in-law worked on one of the king crab boats back in the mid 80's. It's such dangerous work.

He was hit in the face with a winch, almost went overboard (another crew member grabbed him as he flew past).

He told one story about the guy who took care of the vat of boiling water they threw the crabs into.

The guy had his back to the vat, and a huge claw comes out and grabs him by the collarbone. He reaches back, flings it forward, then he stupidly PUNCHED it in the face. The pointy nose ripped through his hand.

OUCH...

I've done so much SAR in the Bering it's ridiculous. The port calls in Dutch were all bitter sweet.

Those Bering sea sailors have big brass ones.

60' rogue wave hitting one of the Bering boats. (new window) It's amazing they survived it.

There's Dutch and rudder in that story and nobody on Fark has remarked on that yet.

So was it one of those cod processing floating factories? That is one of many places I would hate to be trapped waiting to die.

I understand that they know the risk going in, but it's still a bad deal. I used to think there was only 2 things that I was afraid of,(Taxes and Jealous Husband) but after watchin that show there's now 3 things.LOL You really got to have a special kind of love for your job to do that.My hat's off to ALL them guys and I will never ever complain about the cost of crab-legs again!!!Your heart really has to their families.

OH I dunno, trapped in a burning marrijuanna storage warehouse doesnt sound so bad. Hell anything involving immenent death and hookers has possiblities.

I always wondered why they don't just use subs for that work...gotta be safer 50-100' underwater...just have a big hole in the bottom aka deep blue sea to move the nets/traps in and out of the vessel...

Subs are expensive as hell to operate, don't have the rigging necessary to handle the gear, and don't have the storage space to hold whatever you are catching. They may be safer (or maybe not depending on the nation that operates) but they simply aren't suited to the job.

From what I could find, if this is the same type as the other vessels the owner operates, it is/was a small processing ship.

That show sucks so much nuts! It's pretty much the same thing over and over and over and over and over. Who wants to see a bunch of Alaskans drop a crate in the ocean, lift it out, dump out crabs, and repeat. The Discovery Channel needs to start playing more trippy things about the galaxy, dinosaurs, animals, and that kinda stuff, and quit playing annoying marathons of the Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, and Mythbusters (alright show, but gets old QUICK).

My husband is in the Dutch Harbor area right now. It's fugging cold... Here are a few pics he sent the other night of what it looked like a couple of weeks ago in Saint Paul Island. My heart goes out to the sailors and their loved ones. :(

I need to check which ship he works on.

So you're saying you enjoy WATCHING people do work on TV? You sound like a pretty big nerd if that's the case. I can watch myself and my coworkers all day, I don't need to see it on TV when I'm off work. Go get a stroke you old piece of shiat!

/Just messin around, but not really.
