(Toronto Star) Cool Hottest music ticket this summer will be for a 73-year-old guy in a black suit who hasn't toured in 15 years and who's got a voice like a coffee can full of gravel and smoke   (thestar.com) divider line 54

I remember you well
in the Chelsea Hotel,
you were talking so brave and so sweet,
giving me head
on the unmade bed,
while the limousines wait in the street

The guy can either make you hurt all over, or perhaps make you think there is hope, within just a few lines.

If he does a show near me I've got to try to get tickets. I'm not normally a concert goer, but for him I'd make an exception. Though right now none of the announced dates are anywhere near me.

I had no idea Leonard Cohen was touring, but when I read the headline I knew exactly who it was about.

That 73-year-old graveled voice is still better than 90 percent of the stuff out there now.

He's a brilliant writer. He's old enough to be my grandfather and I'd still sleep with him.

Hiatt. Sheesh. And he's been touring with Lyle all year - they even headlined a cruise ship tour.

I just spent $611 for THREE seats to see Clapton in a few weeks. I hope I have recovered enough to afford to see LC if he get withing range.

John Hiatt wishes he was Leonard Cohen.

Billy Bragg?

Just saw Billy Bragg open for The Pogues last Sunday night. Very good set.

I might fly to Toronto just for this, unless he changes his mind & comes to the States.

Good on him, what with the demand for tickets and the R&R Hall of fame this month, considering all the crap he's been through in the last 20 or so years, both battling crippling depression, then having his (now ex-) manager steal most of his money.

Good write up here.

Saw Tom Waits in Minneapolis in '99. Four curtain calls. Best show ever.

Sure beats Fall Out Boy. I'm sick of hearing guys who sound like pre-teen whiners. Why must everyone out there now sing through their NOSE?

Um, Leonard Cohen is a brilliant songwriter and all, but I doubt they are the HOTTEST tickets this summer. Maybe among people with taste, but not overall.

KrustAsian 2008-03-23 07:42:14 PM
Oh come on, I may be an Obama-voting Democrat, but I don't think John McCain's voice is that bad-sounding.

Waits is touring this summer. He's the last on my "see before they're dead" list.

I barely missed out on getting into an ACL taping (they ran out of passes with maybe another half dozen people in line in front of me) and that's the closest I've ever come to seeing Leonard Cohen live. On the other hand, I did completely luck into seeing Tom Waits play at SXSW one year, at a time when he hadn't played live in quite some time. A friend called me up the evening of his showcase at the Paramount, and he had ended up with a spare ticket. One of those deals where I was downtown standing next to the guy before he could hang up the phone...

Any details on that tour? There's been an alert up on one of the sites, but no itinerary. This summer is getting busy already, but Tom is a priority.

I saw him in Milwaukee YEARS ago;

STILL one of the best - song wise and FUNNIEST concerts I have ever seen, even including comedians.

If you ever get to see Richard Thompson, GO! Same thing: morose songs and howlingly funny stage banter.

I've seen him solo maybe three times and once with a band, always the best. Great self-deprecating humor, particularly when he's solo. The band gig I saw was amazing: Richard with Danny Thompson, Dave Mattacks and Pete Zorn, who was doing slides on his mic stand with a mandolin during Shoot Out The Lights.

They started with two shows in Halifax, and ended up adding three more last Thursday when tickets went on sale. All five shows sold out in less than 10 hours. ($300,000 in ticket sales).

Now they're already over $400/pair on eBay.

Insanity..Glad I got mine. :)

Maybe he'll look down a hundred floors and take pity on this poor bastard with a comp ticket, ha. It's only a 650-mile drive.

/Tom Waits was awesome live. He conducts his band by making gestures with his foot.
