That may be the first time I've ever seen that used in a non-sarcastic way.

// making fun of Wisconsin is a state hobby

If you live in Colorado you may want to check out Shamrock Brewing Co (p) in Pueblo. The food is very good to excellent but the beer brewed on site is better. They have a pretty good selection of imported and domestic beers if that is your want.

I KNEW that had to be about Wisconsin... I might have to start making more frequent trips across the border from the Twin Cities

/can only get New Glarus in Wisconsin

I can't believe I'm saying this...

But THIS.

I live in AZ and as much as Four Peaks kicks ass, I wouldn't mind having another good brewery or 5 in AZ

Can only get New Glarus at the bar downstairs!

(BTW, Sand Creek has some solid brews, did a tour there a couple years ago)

New Glarus beers are the best. Everytime I visit back home, I make sure to pick up several cases of New Glarus beers. Fat Squirrel, Spotted Cow, Uff-Da, Zwieckel, all of them excellent.

The funny thing about this story is that the list afterwards is very incomplete. I know of 5 great small breweries within 30 miles of here that aren't on the list.

Capital Brewery isn't on the list. Their blonde dopplebock will get you drunk in a hurry. The octoberfest ain't that bad either.

There are getting to be more and more all the time, too. I find out about them at my local beer wine & spirits store, Three Cellars, and occasionally they have tastings.

Metro Milwaukee Farkers, check them out sometime. I don't know if I should link them here, but Google is your friend.

AZ is obviously doing something very, very wrong :/

Or theres some stuff hidden around the valley I don't know about.

Oh well, trade off for the decent weather 9 months out of the year.

Perhaps you'd be willing to enlighten me? I have a ton of family in CO and that would certainly dull the pain.

I don't know of anything outside of New Belgium in Fort Collins.

Abita Brewing (pops) in Abita Springs, LA (about 30 mins from New Orleans) is a great tour as well as tasty product.

When last I was there the free tour was all-you-could-drink, and if anyone ran out during the tour you were to hold you cup aloft. They would stop the tour for a refill trip to the tap room, only to restart the tour where you left off. No one complained (including the staff) about the many pauses.

We were encouraged to hang out in the tap room and drink for free after the tour completed as well.

You might not think of Little Rock as a beer mecca, but it does have one shining beacon of wonderfulness: Diamond Bear Brewery. The Pale Ale has won the gold at the Beer Cup twice in a row. It's seriously quality.

But this one is the best, IMHO:

If beer can be shipped, I will ship some to interested parties.

Tora:

Let me help you out with making your Colorado family more tolerable.

There about half a dozen microbreweries in the Boulder-Longmont Fort Collins area - O'Dell (5 Barrel Pale Ale rocks), Twisted Pine, Boulder, New Belgium, Flying Dog (in Denver) and at least one other that I don't remember off-hand. There's also a meadery in Boulder.

Tommyknocker is in Idaho Springs. Wynkoop is in LoDo (Lower Downtown Denver). Breckenridge Brewing has it's main location in Breck and a location in Denver (on Blake Street near Coors Field). There are two in Dillon (Dam and another that I can't remember). There's one in Frisco at Main and Summit(?).

Here's a link to a more complete list.

http://www.beer100.com/brewpubs_a_to_k/colorado.htm

Enjoy.

one of the breweries listed at the end, lake louie, is in my home town. the owner/founder is a lifelong family friend, went to high school with my parents and such, we used to swim and ice skate at lake louie before the brewery was there (well you can still swim and ice skate there.) awesome beers.

anyway, if you like beer, then you must escape to Wisconsin. We don't find much value in anything but drinking.

The great thing is we can also go out on Sundays and pick up some of the suggestions here and in the article. Gotta love a state that hasn't touched the barrel tax rate since the 60's.

pdieten: Thanks for the suggestion; I've been looking for another store. The old lady at Discount Liquor could probably put her grandkids through college on what I've dropped there sometimes.

/Anyone know where you can get beer-style mead in WI?
//Or for that matter Auchentoshan 12 y.o.?

This seems to be a very incomplete list. Just last night, I was enjoying a Berghoff Pale Ale from Huber Brewing in Monroe, WI. I've heard that Huber is the second oldest brewery in the US next to Yuengling, and their Pale Ale is a wonderful sort of blend of Bass Ale and real Czech Budweiser Budvar flavors.

The only bad thing about New Glarus beer is that it's not sold out of state, meaning that I'm always at the UPS Store shipping Spotted Cow to relatives Down South.

For those who want to visit the brewery, you can't miss it-it's on WI Highway 69 about 30 miles south of Madison.

But it's tragic that Capitol Brewery in Middleton (Madison) isn't o the list.

Good, as well as McClellan's (Irish pub and brewery a little west in Canon City, CO.

If you're in Northern Colorado this summer, make sure to stop by the Estes Park Brewery on your way through Rocky Mountain National Park. Good brew, and great scenery.

They forgot Titletown Brewing from Green Bay!!

Anyone went to the Great American Beerfest in Denver last year? Loved it. I really am surprised there was no talk of a Fark meetup last year. We should do one in October. Spread the word!!

While not a microbrewery......The Safe House in Milwaukee is the coolest bar in the US

Just look for the Universal Exports entrance!

Another one of my favorites is O'Fallon brewing companiy in O'Fallon Missouri. Great bear, and incredibly nice owners.
I emailed them one time asking about how they brewed a certain beer, and they invited me over to take a tour and gave me a six pack of it.
Way cool family owned/run business.
If you're ever swing through Ofallon on I70 in Missouri, I recommend stopping by for a visit.

Gotta give a shout-out to an excellent brewery in my old home town, Morganton, NC.

Catawba Valley Brewing Company

They are actually now in downtown Morganton (such as it is), and can sell their beer by the pint or half-gallon growler; up until now, they sold by the keg only. I highly recommend their beer, if you happen to be in western NC or eastern TN.

DangerousDave: Flying Dog (in Denver)

Actually, Flying Dog has moved all of their production brewing to Maryland of all places. They still have office type stuff here in Colorado (marketing, HR), but no actual beer making.

Sort of off putting from a company that trades so very heavily on a Colorado, Hunter Thompson vibe. Meh, they were already doing a good chunk of brewing out there. Just doesn't seem "right" from a Colorado brewing standpoint.

zymurgist 2008-03-23 05:20:43 PM
rka

Flying Dog got a deal they couldn't pass up. Frederick Brewing overexpanded their facility and went bankrupt. They were looking for years for someone to buy them out, and finally Flying Dog came along.

I only hope they keep making the Blue Ridge line. The ESB is awesome and it sells for less than the Flying Dog brands.
