Something tells me that the average regional spelling bee champion won't have to worry about that..

Yup. And 99% of the time, it's due to the actions/inactions/plain stupidity of others.

Just watch, the school district will fail in their attempt to "fix" their error, then turn around and fnd some way to blame the kid and/or her parents for the fark-up.

Remember, you heard it here first.

Same kind of shiat happened to me when I was in the fifth grade. Did not really care. I was happy with the savings bond they gave me. I knew I was going to go to DC in the sixth grade, so I didn't care. In sixth grade I was suspended and missed the trip.

"spell evolution"
"I-N-T-E-L-L-I...uh I-N-T-T... uh B-A-B-Y J-E-B-U-S that spells evolution"

seriously though the article doesn't mention a deadline. If there is no strict guideline on getting registered, no harm no foul, pay the fee let her spell her heart out. If however there was a deadline, it wouldn't be fair to allow her in because it would set a precedent. Ignorance of the rules should be no excuse for the school district.

The problem is that Morgan attends North Platte Junior High School...

I think they mispelled "is not homeschooled"

Dandelo [TotalFark] 2008-03-23 08:41:04 AM
Local Newspaper FTW. The issue isn't the school paying $99. They paid the entrance fee. The issue is that before, you would register with your local paper, and they would register your school. Now, the schools themselves had to register, so they registered as a district, thinking that someone with half a brain would realize that there are SCHOOLS in a school district. Apparently, that's way too big of an assumption for these people. Good at spelling, fail at deductive reasoning. Anyhow, the little girl is just being prepared for a life of Government work, so I think they're doing the right thing, farking her this hard, this early.

Classic.

The daughter was always a good student and loved doing things like the geography and spelling bees. And any other of these things. Some of the schools were excited, but some could not have possibly cared less. If it was not about athletics, it did not matter.

She gets a full academic scholarship and barely gets any recognition, yet the craptastic football, basketball, baseball, etc. programs get accolades for failure.

/not bitter....much

"The first thing we have to do is try to explain to an innocent child how a legal interpretation of an (unclear) application has now disqualified her," father Jim Brown said. "We will definitely make sure she understands that this is not a reflection on her efforts."

She's in grade 7. Junior high school. She's not 5 years old. She's old enough to actually understand the situation.

My little sister got into the National Bee (from a public school in a very small town) last year. It was a pretty big deal, actually. They paid to fly her over there, and, no matter how you place, they give you hundreds of dollars in free stuff.

Worked as a volunteer in the regional spelling bee at my university a few years back. Run a bit sloppy, but generally well-meaning folks. But a specifically advertised prize is the trip to DC and the chance to compete for the prizes. If they don't give her that, I don't see how they don't legally owe her the prizes (or the cash value thereof) under estoppel.

farkwarg 2008-03-23 10:20:00 AM
But you gotta love it, some short sighted stupid ahole made some asinine rule that some short sighted stupid ahole failed to follow and it "can't be undone" so someone who did everything right on their part gets the shaft. What part of "if people made the rules in the first place then people can change the rules when they find they don't work" did these aholes miss?
