The British Army garrison left in the Falklands after winning the 1982 war grew to dislike the taciturn, inbred locals; after a while they began calling them "Bennys," after a particularly dim, slightly retarded character on British TV.

The locals figured this out and complained; the British officers warned their men to stop using the offending name. The troops then referred to the Falklanders as "Stills." As in "they're still Bennys."

Oil can only benefit a country, never bring trouble to it. What a great boon to the Falkland Islanders!

/Could also be a boon to the local flak jacket industry in a few years.

bush and cheneys guide to business strategy in the (insert name) falklands:

step 1. we invade them under false pretenses.doesnt matter what we say now as the end (profit) justifies the means
step 2. send some soldiers and let them die for this oil grab
step 3. take control of this oil
step 4. double the price of gas anyway just to be cute
step 5. Profit from gov't contracts and defense spending, and on oil

its a formula for 'freedom' and I am sure the falklands had something to do with 9/11. If they dont who cares at that point we will own your a$$ son.

can i has next country?

Met a guy once who had been stationed at the Faulklands garrison. His stories made it sound like a total hell-hole of british servicemen driven into a state of violent and primeval thuggery by keeping nothing but their own company for years on end.

Yeah but I am only 31... two or more decades ago I wouldn't know how to handle a boom.

Besides the real boom is getting in when people see the opportunity aty first and riding the wave. Why sit in a still ocean for a long time when you can go out just in time to catch the wave?

Drew should buy those Islands and call them the Farkland Islands. They could be a protectorate of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Farkistan.

Burchill 2008-03-23 06:20:41 AM
This may be why most residents of the Falklands (Bennies is the pejorative term) dislike British military there, they know they're just another Rockall

*not really, it more that bored servicemen get pissed and cause trouble. Well there's fark all else to do.

Before they all head off to the BMW dealership, perhaps now would be the time to remind the islanders that 1) they're not a country 2) 90% of Dubai's wealth is held by 2% of the populace 3) the ordinary people in Jersey, home to more billionaires per capita than Monaco, have been complaining this week about the lack of services and vast cost of living.

Wondered when this would be more obvious. Reason we went to war the first time was the amount of oil supplies known to be about there.

I miss the days when our leaders picked wars they could win, like the Falklands and Grenada.

Mmmmm. Oil.....

Erm, there's no BMW dealership down there, it's Land Rover territory.

Benny isn't all that pejorative, I've heard locals refer to themselves that way.

And the Islanders are rich anyway, from the fishing licenses.
