I was thinking with the cat fight and all, it's probably a wise choice.

If Edwards was going to endorse, he would have done it already.

He's classy and smart to stay out of it. So is Gore. It's a friggin soap opera out there.

barneyfifesbullet 2008-03-22 06:50:30 PM
Besides, it's funny to watch Richardson endorse Obama now when it doesn't matter. Someone should ask him what Obama promised him because obviously Clinton wouldn't do it.

Actually I think he is positioning himself for a brokered convention.

It wouldn't be the first time a candidate dropped from the primary race but became the compromise general election candidate. Or influenced which person got the nomination and what running mate they had.

/Not that I think he really has a chance.
//Just saying.

it matters. clinton has been asking the super delegates to hold off on falling in line behind obama, telling them to wait, hoping he'll blow himself up before the convention. richardson was sending them a clear message that they didn't have to wait, it is obvious that obama is going to win.

hopefully some more of them get that message.

Edwards is worthless... i can't believe so many people fell for his bullshiat.

and the Richardson endorsement was very valuable and likely the penultimate nail in Hillary's coffin.

Seeing as how Edwards was the one candidate with less political experience... less "capital" than either Obama or Clinton, no, he doesn't have a chance.

I think the Richardson endorsement will still pack a punch, but probably in November rather than any of the remaining primaries. Still, it does send the message that supers don't have to wait to endorse as burndtdan pointed out.

An Edwards endorsement could help with North Carolina, maybe with Pennsylvania. I doubt he will endorse though. How do you get to be a party elder though when your main claim to fame is a failed veep bid?

Franco 2008-03-22 10:47:23 PM
A Obama/Richardson ticket is a pretty solid sell. It has the possibility of shoring up the Latino vote in the general and shows that Obama will surround himself with people experience. I have no idea how McCain could counter act that.

Abizaid, Sebelius, Webb, and Zinni would all be better VP picks for Obama than Richardson. None of them have expressed interest in it as of yet, though.

Hell it might matter more than ever now. We are at a stalemate that will continue until the convention UNLESS super delegates swing towrads obama now and end this.

Richardson signals for the others, who might be afraid of the Clintons, to follow.

We will see if it works.

Necrosis 2008-03-22 10:58:54 PM
There is almost no way that Hillary can win at this point, so Edwards should have just endorsed Obama and helped put Hillary out of her misery. He can't pretend to be some impartial elder when he was already a candidate. Hillary has practically no chance, so I don't see what he could be holding out for. If he supported Obama in time for it to matter, it might do him some good.

The Bestest 2008-03-22 10:59:33 PM

If you lose to Cheney in VP debates, your privilages are suspended.

As for McCain picking Condi, did you type that with a straight face?

Huggles McCain is not stupid enough to tie himself to the Bush administration any more than he has to. Condi is a brilliant woman who unfortunately chose to use her powers for evil.

You won't see her, or any other prominent Bush minion, in any elected position after this administration ends. Most people just want to put these last 8 years behind us as soon and as decisively as possible.

I'm betting McCain goes with Romney to shore up the GOP base.

Not like this he won't. I was really hoping he would get in there, help Obama out and be his VP. My guess Richardson will be his running mate, and he'll make a good one. Being that Richardson is a governor, former UN Secretary, Energy Secretary, Congressman (I believe), and hispanic the Dems could do much, much worse.

Wanebo: Actually I think he is positioning himself for a brokered convention.

How would this happen? Someone will get a majority once the superdelegates come in... there's no need for multiple ballots or any sort of brokering.

worlddan 2008-03-22 11:10:56 PM
As a New Mexican, I can assure the idea that Bill Richardson has the Hispanic vote is as stupid as saying that Gerri Ferraro represents the women's vote. There are lots of Hispanics in NM that hate his guts and would vote for McCain over him. No doubt there would be a lot of viva! La Raza coming out of places like CA but I think it's really foolish to think that Obama would pick Richardson as his VP. Secretary of State is much more likely.

I do agree with the idea that this was a big nail in Clinton's coffin. It was she, and not her hubby, that promoted him within the Clinton administration. The truth is that it was a big betrayal. It's being seen that way here in NM and as a desperation move for Richardson to save his career (he can't be governor anymore due to term limits).

I have dealt with Richardson a couple of times in an official capacity and I hate his guts. He is just another slimey wetback politician. (yeah, I went there). If Obama is President, as seems likely, I hope that he washes his hands of him ASAP. If he doesn't, that would say a great deal about Obama's ethics.

I find comments like this to be absurd.

Politics isn't SUPPOSED to be about backing whatever your firends do or say. A political figure is SUPPOSED to go with the interests of America, his constituents and his own conscience.

If Richardson thinks Obama would be a better president, then he SHOULD endorse him. Betrayal has nothing to do with it.

That kind of attitude is what gave us 8 inept years of Bush, where he appointed people based on loyalty instead of competance and no one stood up to him because they wanted to promote their party affiliation instead of the good of the country.

Falcc 2008-03-22 11:19:08 PM
According to the Keith Olbermann story a few posts down Richardson is applying for Secretary of State, and does not wish to run as Vice President. Please make a note of it.

worlddan: He is just another slimey wetback politician. (yeah, I went there).

Why did you go there? Furthermore, what does that even mean? Are there a lot of 'slimey' politicians that have crossed the Rio Grand down there? And that's ignoring the racial epithet dimension of what you're saying.

Richardson seems pretty well respected outside of New Mexico. If that's not warranted, a well reasoned argument would be enlightening. Your post is. . well. . an anecdote, and weird.

Besides that, I *highly* doubt Obama would pick Richardson as Veep. . .I've never thought that likely. It just doesn't make sense.

I'm thinking the veep is going to come from the military, the republican party, or some hardcore foreign policy realist -- the anti-Cheney.

Are you joking?

His entire platform consists of three stances:

1) Continue Bush's war in Iraq and the current Iraq policy.
2) Keep Bush's tax cuts.
3) Stop "pork-barrell" spending.

2/3rds of his platform is tied directly to Bush.

I love Webb... but he does seem like a hot-head. Plus, republicans love to quote the dirty parts of his novels and claim he is a peodophile. I wonder if he would be something of a liability as VP choice.

man, there's a lot of edwards hate here.

i never understood this. he was a poor kid who worked his ass off to become a successful lawyer and then made his fortune taking on multinational corporations for wronged individuals. in other words, he took on big business for the small guy - and won. if he were a john grisham character you'd all be rooting for him.

The only thing i hated about Edwards was he had to relate EVERYTHING to some corny anecdote about a poor person he met.
No matter what the issue was he'd stare into the camera in that vacant way and with his thick drawl go "that reminds me of a little girl I met in a trailer park in Georgia. All she ever wanted was to be an astronaut, but she was so poor she couldn't even afford a bottle rocket. She had the cutest blue dress and eyes like a pile of gold. That's why I think NASA needs more funding. Next question?"

Actually I think he is positioning himself for a brokered convention.

Or he's just acting like the ambulance chaser he is. I never understood his attraction as a candidate - he mops up on other people's pain!

Anyway, late as it is, I welcome Richardson's endorsement of Obama....and seeing how close he is(was) to the Clintons, it must have twisted inside of him before he announced. I read that he wouldn't take Bill's calls this week - again, it must have him it just as hard as it did the Clintons for him to follow his conscience. Ouch.

/Algore needs to get it done. Once he makes a move I would expect a slow avalanche of supers to follow. I also expect his endorsement to go to Obama, since there is little to no love for the Clintons.

Jim Webb was a (damn good) war novelist for awhile. He wrote some great books about Vietnam.

Being about vietnam, they include a lot of dark shiat like women being blown up, young girls being raped, old men being totruted... yada yada. All based on stuff he saw when he was in Veitnam of course.

I'm from Virginia and when he ran against George Alan the entire campaign revolved around quoting the dirty parts of his book and making him look like some twisted pornographer (I guess).

okay, the famous case: a little girl is disemboweled by a faulty swimming pool drain - that the manufacturer knew to be faulty.

yeah, that's some ambulance-chasing there. those people should've just accepted that their daughter's number was up and left it at that. crybabies. and how dare that edwards actually represent them? doesn't he know that the corporation should supersede the individual in all cases!

Somacandra [TotalFark] 2008-03-22 11:32:52 PM
At this point, I don't think an Edwards endorsement means much, except to sway a few superdelegates. And after last time, I don't think Senator Edwards is going to be asked to be on anyone's VP ticket. He had his chance. Then again, I've never particularly cared for Senator Edwards. I've been thinking about the Obama/Richardson ticket. I think it would do do quite well, especially in the West. Richardson's executive experience would counterbalance Obama's legislative efforts. I don't think it will have much effect on the Latino vote--its pretty fractured and complex as it is. I suspect that instead Sen. Obama would pick either Sebelius from Kansas or Napolitano from Arizona. Plus, Obama would be picking a woman, which might help heal some bad blood with former HRC supporters. Napolitano would really burn McCain, as that would be a direct challenge to AZ voters who otherwise would have gone with McCain as the favorite son. I don't think Webb is a good choice for a VP slot. Two senators is not a good idea--we like executives these days, as much as possible. Also, Webb literally is still wet behind the ears--any charges of "not ready" would go double for Webb. The guy literally just got elected in 2006. And going with a veteran is not historically a big winner for Democrats. But if you're going to do that, why not just get former Supreme NATO Commander Wesley Clark in the VP slot?
