a $40 speeding ticket

At first I was put off by the idea of a camera van, but for $40 speeding tickets I might move there.

Given the choice between a $200 ticket on the off chance I get caught speeding, or a $40 ticket everytime I push the speed limit (which is basically everytime I drive), I think I'd go with the former.

/I go with the "make sure there's at least one car going faster than me" theory, combined with the "don't go more than 10 over" theory".

I go with the "the cameras aren't set up to read your plate if your car is sideways" method. Every intersection I yank the handbrake and crank the wheel and let my awesomeness and solid Korean engineering do the rest.

I will have to watch out when driving in Chicago. Though I'm sure I will be amazed by your "awesomeness!" tehehe

For $30, you can get stuff to make your license plate unreadable to flash cameras.

Speed cameras/red light cameras should not be allowed. They are revenue generators for the entity deploying them. I receive the average number of FDAs in my years driving. Legislature here in GA has started taking away the ability to deploy these things. Gendarmes should have special traffic units if they want to raise revenue and actually go back to pacing/radar/laser in lieu of automatic devices. Or, really do police work going after burglars, murderers, thieves, and rapists. And, hot teachers sexing up their students! More "I'd hit it" mugshots would be appreciated.

Yes, but as usual I have a feeling that one might have been a cop buy off. There are some cases I am just not convinced they are being 100% objective.

I would like to see someone go through all the same tests just to make sure.

Now you know...
And the city or cops just can't make an illegal parking spot, only legal for a photo van to park there.
And when theres no shoulder on the road and the cop tries to point you into a parking lot for a live ticket? Thats trespassing. Park in the lane of traffic and call his boss or take any extra ticket to court. But the cop may just wave you away to avoid issues like that.

Inflatable Rhetoric

The not going more than 9 over the limit works for me. Here in Mesa, AZ, the cops always park the camera vans ilegally. I have to remember this if I ever get a ticket.

B.T.W. driving on the freeway one day, the speed cameras were malfunctioning. They were taking pictures of every car, even though it was rush how and the traffic was going 35 in a 65 zone. That almost caused a couple of accidents with the bright lights strobing in your eyes.

curmudge: Inflatable Rhetoric you may want to take a look at Mythbusters before you spend the money.

Because we all know they've never, ever, had test results that conflict with how things work in the real world. Mythbusters is hard science done by experts in their field of research and not just two jaggoffs with a special effects background.

Inflatable Rhetoric: Did they do a segment on it?

At least twice, with parts of it being re-visited in later episodes. The spray products failed miserably with the only thing giving even the slightest (but still failing) result was an actual lens plate cover.

The myth was argued by fans for a do-over because their test camera was mounted at an unrealistically-low hight. It was raised to 10ft and they tried again for a more downward angle on the lens. It still failed.

Then they used the rest of the segment as an excuse to see how fast they could drive, and to borrow a Lamborghini.

While they might be revenue generators they can also have a very positive impact if properly placed, at least speed cameras can. In my neighborhood we are a cut-through between two highways (Rockville, MD). It wasn't uncommon to have people driving 60 mph in the 25 mph residential zone because the street I live on is straight and two lanes, one for parking but normally open. Average speed seemed to be 35-40. I can understand the road can technically handle higher speeds but there are a few thousand kids living in a small area, they tend to be erratic and even the best of parents have times when their kids get away and run for freedom. At the posted 25 a driver has much more time to see and respond to emergency situations. Once the county put speed stationary speed cameras in with ample warning signage everything changed. We still have the rare 60 mph idiot, but the average speed is more like 30, much safer and we can now cross the street safely rather than having to dodge and dash every time we attempt it.

I think the different between a speed trap and a speed management photo enforcement system is that the former doesn't warn first, or the warning is purposely vague. With the latter there are large signs and the intention is obviously to get people to slow down because it's a residential area.

By the way, tickets aren't generated until someone drives more than 10 mph over the limit.

Your situation is the one rare exception to the rule. Here in Phoenix, people just slow down for the cameras and punch it after they pass them. What happened to being able to face your accuser? I know the Constitution is just a piece of paper, but how do I question a Camera. That is why the fines are civil and not criminal. Just a way to get around the Constitution. I hate how we are becoming a police state. The country that is supposed to have the most freedoms has the highest prision rate in the world.

I don't know how it would be trespassing unless the owner of the lot actually complained, and I can't see many businesses calling the cops out on this, although it is arguably possible. The real problem is that the person getting the ticket lacks "standing" to challenge the ticket on trespassing grounds because his rights were not violated even if you argue that the lot owner's rights were (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standing_%28law%29).

One thing I noticed from the article is the "maybe" tone to dismissing these tickets. The Commander said that if the van was parked illegally, then he would work with the city attorney to get them dismissed. That's because it's no longer the commander's call but the city attorney's who is acting as prosecutor. If the city attorney does not want to dismiss the tickets (depends on if he is elected or appointed) than I can't think of any grounds to set the tickets aside because the van may have been illegally parked. It's certainly does not violate the federal constitution, although I can't be certain about the state constitution. The main reason to set these aside is the controversy, but I can't think of any legal grounds that would require it.

zephypyre 2008-03-22 02:00:47 PM
Easiest solution: Took my plate off and taped it inside my tinted rear window. I've been asked once by a cop why it was so, told him it had lost a screw. I know I've sped past a camera at least once, and four months later still no ticket.

I live in Montgomery Co, MD and they have legalized speeding cameras here (and now the other counties are trying to follow suit. Assholes!) I have already scored two of these at $40 each. After speaking with the county courthouse about these tickets, I was told for the most part they treat them like a parking ticket-Nothing goes on anyone's record unless you don't pay it within the required time limit (about 45 days) then it goes against the owner of the vehicle.

You know how I get out of tickets? I don't speed. I always use my turn signal. I never turn into the far lane. I maintain a safe following distance. I never run stop signs.

Is this the start of a preachy tirade? Actually, no. I just want to say that even though I'm never going to get one of these tickets, I still think they are complete and utter bullshiat.

Laws are meant to encourage people not to do bad shiat to other people, not generate revenue to make up the cost of the completely unnecessary demolition of the RCA Dome to build a new stadium that isn't even done yet...well, you probably don't live in Indiana, but I'm sure your state has done some equally crap thing with your money.

Hi, you should travel from the North Shore to Chicago, enjoy going 45 MPH while everyone else around goes between 65-75, cops tend to go 75.

People who go 45 endanger the lives of everyone around them as they're unwilling to adapt to the flow of traffic, thus creating an obstacle.

Reminds me of a road here where I live. It's a 4 lane road almost in the middle of no where with one red light on it after about 3 miles. Theres no houses on it and there are almost no cars going down the road during the day and night. The only time it gets traffic is for about 30 mins after 5pm.

Yet for all that the speed limit is set for 40 miles per hour. Where you can easily do 60 mph on it.

shanewf 2008-03-23 08:20:03 PM
This is great.

They should take the camera equipment, break it into little pieces and insert them rectally into the elected officials that approved this nonsense.

Back home we had a church that we called "Speed Trap Church". Cops always parked in the parking lot and ran radar of people going down the hill. 35 MPH posted limit, easily hit 50 without heavy braking. My radar detector usually warned me, but I always tended to keep a close eye for the cars in front of me. Brake-lights=Cop, No lights=no cop.

There were plenty of complaints to the city and nothing done. Then they complained to the church. I think after someone put nails in the parking lot before rush hour the church decided to move their signs to prevent the cops from running radar.

I have a set of those plastic covers, but they keep making those illegal now too. I'm not sold on the spray, but at least in the winter once you get enough salt and crap on your plate it's unreadable.
