(NYPost) Interesting As if speeding down roads throwing cans out the window while mooning other drivers weren't enough of a warning, NJ to require cars with teens behind the wheel to be marked with a sticker or decal   (nypost.com) divider line 127

this is going to be enforced how? oh, we'll stop anyone who looks like they are underage and stop them for driving without the GDL decal, then we'll realize that they are old enough to be driving without a GDL but still give them a ticket for anything else we find. but it'll take care of that pesky profiling problem. now we just will stop anyone who looks underage.

Is it a big red R? I think we already have those here.

Will the decal say "No Fear"?

Teenagers here shouldn't be allowed to walk the streets, much less get behind the wheel of a car.

Remembering what I was like at that age, I suggest a BioHazard sticker.

Funny about the mooning part!
I say you haven't lived unless you're mooned someone or have been mooned youself!

Yes, a little sticker like this would certainly help to identify which vehicle to keep an eye on.

If only there were some method of creating a tiered social construct in which hormonally apesnot kids could learn the proper notions of responsibility and history and develop, intellectually and emotionally, broadening their horizons, without inflicting their bad judgment on adult, this-is-for-keeps, society.

If only.

When I was 17, GDL in NJ was a secondary offense. You couldn't just be pulled over for being young. Are you outside NJ or have they changed the law?

This is a bad idea.

I used to drive taxi... as soon as people saw a taxi, they would start driving 'Agressively Defensively' using massive amounts of prejudice. The assumption that cabbies are shiatty drivers makes those around a cab, shiatty drivers. People are dumb and react to vehicles marked with special labels quite poorly. Ask any Cop, limo driver (done that too), EMT (dated one), Bus driver, truck driver, garbage man or cabbie. Joe and Jane Minivan get really stupid when contemplating driving around a car with a special label. This will only promote that and you'll see more accidents around teen drivers than as a result of them.

Telos 2008-03-22 01:05:48 PM
Ok so wait. It's a sticker, which means you stick it on the car. Stickers tend to be hard to remove, and usually don't re-stick well.

Soooo... any family that shares a car with the kids will have the sticker. Most families do that, so every family car will have a sticker.

So when 90% of cars have a sticker, how does it help you identify the teens?

Oh great! A state on the verge of bankruptcy with the most corrupt cops and politicians north of the Mason-Dixon Line. A state that "can't" set up voting machines that will verify that it is correctly counting votes can come up with crap like this. HEY TRENTON, before you come up with MORE ways to throw your taxpayers money down the toilet get your house in order and get yourself out of debt! We would vote you asshats out of office but with the voting machines rigged and all the votes stacked THAT would be impossible. No wonder your residents are racing each other to see who can get out of the Garbage State fastest. Bunch of Bozos.

/Rant off

NASCAR's been doing this for years. They're called rookie stripes, and I think it's an excellent idea for the road.

dbirchall [TotalFark] 2008-03-22 01:14:07 PM
I just don't see the need. A NJ license plate on a car should be enough of an indicator to other drivers that they should stay clear.

/escaped NJ native

Luco_D 2008-03-22 01:15:56 PM
This is done in BC as well, you have to have a large magnetic "L" or "N" on the back of your car until you've gotten your full licence

it's good for us, we can identify them easier, give a little extra room, but it's bad for them because people will harass you sometimes

kc987654 2008-03-22 01:17:00 PM
I agree as long as we source the decals from China, like this example:

This this and more of THIS.

Who is going to pay for these stickers? I'm sure they'll find a way to charge an exorbitant price for them.

L plates They are a common site in the UK and else where. Wouldn't work if just NJ is doing it

Wardrobe_Malfunction 2008-03-22 01:23:16 PM
I saw this on my travels to Australia, new drivers have to display a "P" tag on the car until they've got their full license. I can't see why anybody would have a problem with that.

Mr. Gunn 2008-03-22 01:26:35 PM
Yeah, because everyone gives their teen driver a car that only they ever drive, and they never sell those cars.

/Maybe they could make it out of the magnetic stuff currently used to label douchebuggys

Good lord, where did you live? Were you friends with the cops? I was constantly profiled and pulled over for being young. Every night of every weekend. There's no way. You must have been off the roads at midnight and only had one passenger at all times. Are you completely naive to believe the cops care whether it's a secondary offense?

/"what seems to be the problem, sir?"

Also, this is bad because the police will target young drivers who are more likely to take the ticket without questioning. Nice new revenue stream, huh?

Duh? How about a simple L printed on a piece of paper, stuck to the inside of the rear window with tape? Not very flexible in the mental department, are ya?

rpgambit 2008-03-22 01:38:29 PM
Well at least the stickers will help the cops know which cars to harass and thoroughly search for pot. (at least it wont be my car anymore)

This have this type of system in British Columbia. Cops don't enforce it though. And still illegal to harass someone in the name of a new driver..Not that the cops could care anyways..

'L" for learner in progress. But when you see a single person driving ????????
"N" for noob. But restricts hours and amount of drunk friends inside. This N is sometime displayed as a 'Z'. For Zitty.

Cops do enforce it. I know all my friends complain about the cops and how they would get caught.

When I was 17 living in Oregon, I was daily asked by the same cops for my licence and proof of insurance while I was parked on my motor cycle off the road. It was clear they were screwing with me.

One day I asked for one of their badge number and the cop asked my why. I told him that this was happening daily was getting old and that I had been keeping a log. Then I told him I figured a few more times and I would have enough to make a complaint to the state for harassment. That was the last time I was stopped in that town even though I tried to several times after that to get them to.

Reverse sociological warfare can be so rewarding.
