In NY, assemblymen can get their salary doubled by Lulu's (pay in leu of) that they
get for each committee, sub-committee, leadership position, etc. they attend or hold -
ALL of which are assigned by their party leaders. The last challenger to the assembly
leader THOUGHT he had a majority to take over - until fellow pols realized that if they
backed him and he lost - they'd could get their pay cut in half BY THE PARTY LEADER.

The challenger ended up losing his support, his Lulu's, and even his office.
His new office was a men's room in the basement.
He chose to resign next election cycle.

House: 141 D's, 19 R's
Senate: 35 D's, 5 R's

This casino thing was the biggest legislative farce in MA politics in a long time. Patrick knew he didn't have the votes for it and watched it go down in flames so he could have something to use as a chit the next time he really needs something from the legislature. There was never any intention of pushing this through.

My *great* state just shot themselves in the foot. Now they might not get a dime from the casino that will most likely be built by the local native American tribe.
