Shouldn't we be concerned about this? Weren't the Kurds our allies at the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom? If I recall correctly, we regularly held patrols over Kurd territory to prevent Saddam's armored units from attacking the Kurds. How come we're allowing the Turks in there now?

If their handlers ever unmuzzle them, the Turks will wish they were never born.

They'd be attacking with whatever came to hand while facing a Turk, but I'm guessing they'll most likely use some of the hardware listed here.

By "Med in a month", I meant they'd be marching there. By way of Turkey. On a carpet of dead Turks.

Keep in mind Turkey is also heavily supported by the U.S. Keep in mind they're in NATO and we paid them $32.6 billion (I believe) to allow us to cross their border into Iraq in 2003. If the Kurd rebels get into regular armed conflict with the Turkish special forces, we might be in a diplomatic quandary.

Honestly I would rather back the Kurds, we have abandoned them too often for my liking. Seems almost... dishonorable.

Sandwyrm 2008-03-21 03:46:48 AM

That's what I was thinking. So it is wrong when Saddam kills Kurds, but it is okay when the Turks do. Sounds like BS to me.

Man for man? Sure. At the hypothetical four or five to one odds (were both militaries to completely mobilize and engage) the Turks could bring to bear? Probably not. If the fifth of the Turkish population who are Kurdish are sympathetic to the cause? Who knows.

Of course, this hypothetical has nothing to do with reality anyways. Kurdistan in all-out war with any regional power will turn into a Syria-Turkey-Iran gangbang.

Occam's Chainsaw
a: In the scenario you are suggesting, the Turks would have home-field advantage.
b: Turkey has an Air Force. Pershmerga has a few tanks. Do you know what happens when tanks meet a modern air force? On open ground?
c: Turkey has the logistic power to wage an extended war. Pershmerga has virtually no infrastructure.
d: Even in an even-numbers small-arms war the Turks would still win. They are better equipped, better supplied, better trained and actually have competent leadership.

Occam's Chainsaw [TotalFark] 2008-03-21 05:18:00 AM
a: If by "home field advantage" you mean "Kurds lived here, until we eradicated them."
b: The Peshmerga have anti-air assets. Air power is somewhat marginalized when your opposition is using asymmetric warfare doctrines.
c: Point for Turkey. PKK + sympathetic Turkish Kurds would sap that somewhat, but not in any sort of meaningful way.
d: Unless you're going to hit me with some hardcore analysis from Jane's, I'm going to call this a matter of opinion. In my opinion, it's not about equipment and training. You don't want to fight the Peshmerga for the same reasons you don't want to fight the Ghurka or the French Foreign Legion: because they're slightly insane, and your only option is to kill each and every last one of them deader than shiat or they'll never stop fighting you.

Did you even read the article? The "Kurds that the Turks are killing" are not the Peshmerga, they are not innocent civilians, they are the PKK, a group recognized around the world as a communist terrorist organization. Even in the article it states this. They regularly bomb civilians in Turkey, and just a few months ago jumped across the border into Turkey to ambush troops, killed some and kidnapped some and took them into Iraq. And how did the Iraqi Kurdish government respond to such terrorism? They didn't do anything. In fact, there are/were PKK offices operating in the Kurdish region with no opposition. Could you image Mexico allowing al-Qaeda offices to operate in Monterey? Could you image them allowing US troops to be kidnapped and taken across their border? It's the equivalent for Turkey. If you truly have not been paying attention to the news surrounding this conflict, then here is a wikipedia article on the PKK:
