Oh I'm pretty sure we've abandoned the former and have moved on to the latter.

I would honestly be completely shocked if it were the former and not the latter. I have absolutely no hope for the integrity of (American) politics.

Why even ask the question? I've already turned my TV off and resigned myself to ignoring all newspapers and radio stations for the next 12 months.

March-June: 3 mos of increasing Dem. wrangling
June-August: 3 mos of Dem/Rep hysteria leading to nat. conventions
August-Nov: 3 mos of total clusterfark leading to national elections
Nov-January: 2 mos of inane media blather about who stole what from whom
Jan-Feb: Swearing in and post-swearing in media dissection

I can't wait till next year.

Racist whites have replaced the word 'nigg*r' with 'racist'.

1978: The damn nigg*rs bring their problems upon their own community. They need to get over it.

2008: The damn racists bring their problems upon their own community. They need to get over it.

The worst part is, people today don't even realize that they're doing it. The greatest trick the Republican party ever pulled was to convince people that racism didn't exist (while using it garner votes under the guise of 'states rights', of course).

If Obama is the nominee the election will be big and will include debates on real issues. If its Hillary v. McCain it will be the usual petty Washington insider mudslinging with each one trying to out play the other while ignoring anything the people actually care about.

WTF is a "small election" at the national level?

matt2891 2008-03-20 11:25:13 PM
"And that is the existential challenge of 2008: whether we will have a big election or a small one. Will we have a serious conversation about the enormous problems confronting the country-the wars, the economic crisis, the looming environmental cataclysm-or will we allow the same-old carnival of swift boats and sound bites? The answer depends on the candidates, of course, and on the media-where cynicism too often passes for insight. But most of all, it depends on you."

And... boom.. there he lays it out for us, in all its ugly glory... Yes, the politicians are part of the problem, yes, the media is part of the problem, but probably most importantly, we, all of us, are part of the problem. We've allowed this crap by being suckered in by all the soundbites and shiat like the Swiftboat veterans. If people stopped responding to this inane crap, then maybe, juuuussst maybe, the politicians and the media would give it a rest. But they don't, you know why? Because it gets results. We have a fickle and shallow media, and fickle and shallow politicians, because we are a fickle and shallow people. Until we make a concerted effort to change ourselves, nothing further will change.

I sincerely hope that its the former, but my gut tells me the latter.

This is the reason that America is on the decline right now. We've lost the ability to have a serious discussion about the problems facing our country, and serious solutions to fixing them. Individual politicians, as well as the government as a whole, can't seem to admit that they're ever wrong about anything.

In the past, the US had the balls to man up and admit that it wasn't perfect, and address problems such as women's rights to vote, slavery, racism, civil rights, etc. Dealing with these problems was politically suicidal in the short term, but it was the right thing to do in the long term. Nowadays, all politicians care about are short term political gains.

For example, very few politicians in DC today would've have the balls to sign the Civil Rights Act back in the 60's, knowing how much it pissed off white voters.

I still think that the funniest part of all of this is the fact that the GOP, in light of 2004 and all they did to Kerry...essentially nominated the GOP version of him for 2008.

He's referencing Obama saying the other day that his grandma was a "typical white person" in being afraid of minorities. Obama obviously intended TWP "WHO IS" afraid of minorities, not a blanket statement about all white people, but...well, expect Fox News and the allegedly "liberal" media to give a lot of play to it in coming days.

I guess it is one of two things:

1.Millions of people on both side of the political spectrum were who were very impressed with his speech are stupid

or

2.You are an idiot

Pick one. I gotta think about it.
