Sam Raimi needs to get to work on the Sword of Truth miniseries... that's what he needs to be doing.

I don't care that this movie is going to depict a younger Jack Ryan; it doesn't matter at all.

Sam Raimi needs to cast Bruce Campbell as Jack Ryan. That's the only acceptable move here.

And Ted Raimi must play no less than five roles.

I was seeing Bruce as some kind of coked up homage to Karl Rove. Ted can play the guy that carries the nuclear launch codes who's being sexed up and compromised by a hot Chinese spy.

Actually, I heard one was in development. They're supposedly working on a film version of Without Remorse too, which would kick serious ass.

If memory serves, Ted Raimi was actually in both Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Too lazy to hit up IMDB to verify, but I'd be willing to swear to it.

Anyway, I'm intrigued by this idea. Never was a huge fan of the Jack Ryan franchise, but I'd be willing to pay to see this.

Correct, From the IMDB bio of Ted Raimi:
Clear and Present Danger (1994) .... Satellite Analyst
Patriot Games (1992) (as Theodore Raimi) .... CIA Technician

Shia Labeouf as Jack Ryan Jr. and Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan Sr.

Damnit Junior! The red wire to the bomb goes here and the white wire goes there! Got it?!!!

I just want to see Harrison Ford to stand in front of Tom Clancy and his typewriter and say "HOW DARE YOU, SIR!"

He's likely to be credited with getting dumb people to pick up a book from time to time, but what a crime against writing that man is.

CanadaDave 2008-03-19 04:42:32 AM
TFA: The intention is to generate several films Raimi would develop and direct, featuring Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted.

Uh, didn't the last movie feature Ryan at a younger, more formative point in his career than previously depicted?

/Will probably see it regardless and read the book he's writing, too.

crypticsatellite: So, I guess they are going to skip over the novels about using planes as missiles to destroy the Capitol building and leaving Jack Ryan as President?

I went and read that page and it's total bullshiat by one of those nutbag conspiracy theorists who haven't a clue. Clancy is known for saying, and i'm quoting from memory, "The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction has to make sense." Which is itself a play on "The truth is stranger than fiction" which i think maybe Twain said. It's a common idea with authors that something they write can be dismissed as unrealistic, but totally unrealistic things happen in real-life all the time, and we don't have to suspend disbelief it it really happened. Clancy wasn't at all saying that he doesn't believe the story of 9-11, he was just saying that if he'd have written it his editor would have made him change it. And the writer of that page seems to think that Tom Clancy was the first person to think up using an airplane as a suicide weapon. As if it's a far stretch to make the leap from Kamikaze to hijacking an airliner. Plus the Allies and Axis in world war 2 experimented with using explosive laden planes and either having the pilot bail out or have a break away craft. Joe Kennedy was killed testing just one such plane. Link

Agreed that they need to make "Without Remorse." That would definitely make a great movie.

I also wouldn't mind seeing "Rainbow 6" made into a movie, although with all the video games already out under this title it may run the risk of overexposure.

No Harrison Ford, no Jack Ryan. Yes, I know that Alec Baldwin played him first, but Harrison Ford played him best.

They should make a Splinter Cell movie with George Clooney as Sam Fisher.

braedan 2008-03-19 01:49:30 PM
Joe Kennedy was killed testing just one such plane.

So, let me get this straight. What you're saying is that the government killed Joe Kennedy while they were trying to devise a way to perfect a guided airplane terrorism tool. The bomber that flew into the Empire State Building was the earliest use of the technology.

Then, in 1963 JFK found out about the government's involvement in his brother's death, so he had to be silenced. Bobby Kennedy met a similar fate, and since he confided in Marilyn Monroe she had to be dealt with as well. Ted Kennedy was warned not to look into any of this, crushing guilt drove him to alcoholism.

Years later the government took control of JFK Jr's plane, but he (heroically) crashed into the sea prior to being diverted into any buildings.

We are through the looking glass here people.

Crewmannumber6 2008-03-19 04:44:45 PM
I wouldn't be a bit surprised to find out that Arec Ballwrin didn't do more movies in the series because of his (or Clancy's) political leanings. Too bad. What a douoche.

from the article: >"The studio was attracted by Raimi's skill in navigating a franchise, following a trio of "Spider-Man" blockbusters."
Was this before or after they actually watched Spider-man 3? I know the studio had a lot of say in the script for that one but...
We had emo-Parker in 1 and 2. We were supposed to have the cool, happy, snarky Spider-man in 3.

Just watched Army of Darkness this last weekend, which makes up for a lot. Can I have some more of that?

/Jack Ryan is almost, kinda, sorta in Rainbow Six. I have yet to see a good "SWAT" movie with real swat tactics.
//Love me some Athena Sword. all the games past that are horrible.

Clarkins 2008-03-19 05:28:26 PM
Baldwin was about the right age to play Ryan in Hunt For Red October. It was the second book in the series before Clancy shiat on the continunity and shoved Red Rabbit in there.

Harrison Ford was too damn old to play Jack in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Patriot Games is the first book in the series. They farked that movie up.

Admiral Greer died in Clear and Present Danger. There's a line that we read after the death that says "still short of 40 Ryan now held one of the premier intelligence posts in the world" because he was promoted after his death. They really farked that movie up and Wilhem DeFoe as Mr. Clark was just stupid.

Putting Ben Asswipe as Jack in Sum of All Fears was just farking dumb. SoAF comes after Clear and Present Danger in Jack is DDCI in that book. He's married and has three kids by that point and they re-invent him as just dating his wife.

I'm all for another Ryan movie and would love No Remorse or Rainbow Six as a movie if they do it right.

FuturePastNow [TotalFark] 2008-03-19 06:42:27 PM
Someone needs to let the movie studios know that prequels really, really suck. Us viewers figured that out some time ago, but I guess it hasn't caught up with the execs yet.

I love Clancey, even though it seems like he was just signing his name on the Net Force series for the last few books.

Ditto...hey, it even has Jack Ryan in it. For a minute.

But if you are going to do it, for the sake of all that is holy...don't change it!

The Sum Of All Fears
was a good book and a lousy movie.
