Large black slab (seen nearby at the time) wanted for questioning.

fezziwig 2008-03-18 05:56:20 PM
Wow. I think my favorite book of his is "The city and the stars" followed by the first RAMA book (the rest with Gentry Lee were rubbish).

paulseta [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 05:57:53 PM
The boys of Sri Lanka breathe a sigh of relief ;-)

Seriously though, astonishingly good author... someone HAS to make Rendezvous with Rama into a film. Come on Fincher, get off yer arse!

Skail [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 05:59:54 PM
:(

That's all I can really say.

paulseta: The boys of Sri Lanka breathe a sigh of relief ;-)

Not so much.. I just heard Michael Jackson will be attending the funeral in a sarong, and will offer "comfort" to Clarke's harem..

Submitter: Arthur C. Clarke - the greatest SF writer of our generation has died at the age of 90

While he was a great writer, his generation was a couple generations ago.

RedLayla 2008-03-18 06:42:22 PM
As a fellow science fiction author, let me just say the world has lost one of its greatest minds today. Farewell, Clarke. You were a god among men and centuries before your time.

pounddawg 2008-03-18 06:42:24 PM
Open the pod bay doors for him.

Gulliver 2008-03-18 06:42:33 PM
RIP to a great author, perhaps one of the greatest.

His imagination fired a spark in mine on many occasions.

Not the greatest character writer, but he sure could vision the BIG concepts.

Goodnight and RIP

NightOwl2255 2008-03-18 06:42:54 PM
To who ever wrote the headline "Arthur C. Clark dead at age 90. Giant fetus spotted floating in Earth orbit", yours may not have been the best headline, but it was the first. Of about 50, at least.

Bill Frist 2008-03-18 06:43:18 PM
I guess this is shiatty to say on the day of his death, but this dude was a horrible writer.

one of the worst I've ever read, honestly.

He had some good ideas and stories, but he couldn't write a sentence to save his life and his humor was sub-MadTV level.

BigSnatch [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 06:43:19 PM
I'm sure he saw this coming.

mindspread 2008-03-18 06:43:21 PM
I'll C&P what I posted on another site:

Rendezvous with Rama was the first book without pictures I ever read.

I never understood why people got so upset when someone famous died.

Now I do. :(

Xazer 2008-03-18 06:43:22 PM
That really sucks, and I just finished reading Rendezvous with Rama.

Weaps [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 06:43:29 PM
That's Sir Arthur C. Clarke to you.

Will be missed.

I'll be taking the space elevator to geosync. Lemme get my brain-cap.

We should dedicate tonight's Cosmos thread to the late Sir Clarke.

Quantumbunny 2008-03-18 06:43:45 PM
Indeed. RIP Sir.

\Childhood's End was a deep book. One of my favorites

Springy23 2008-03-18 06:43:45 PM
RIP :(

/Why couldn't someone lame like Gore Vidal kick it?
//Or Tom Clancy.
