Writers, juvenile.

Both of you, get over it.

A: THAT'S NOT FUNNY!

You know, a link to the offending article would be helpful. Personally, I think the professor is probably overreacting because I can't believe engineering students would be able to write intelligibly about a topic they've never experienced but I'd like to see the article itself before I make my judgement.

smooshie [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 02:37:02 PM
Anyways, it's not surprising women keep complaining about minor stuff like this. In response to complaints about a few frat members holding up a "Yale Sluts" sign in front of the feminist center, Yale paid the feminist center a ton of money and caved in to their whines.

Wait. People that take themselves a wee bit too seriously are offended by a joke? Surely, you jest.

YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT *NOT* TO BE OFFENDED!!!

Look, sometimes, people make off color jokes. You don't try and SHUT DOWN THE PAPER, you call them on it:

"Dear Engineers,

Your joke sucked, and making offensive jokes about women will not help you on your 20 year quest to see a female breast.

Love,

The Women's Study Office."

Not, ZOMG!!1@ "Something offended me!! BUUUUUUUUURNNNN IT!!!!11"

This would be the proper way to handle it. But hell, when the choice is be amusing or attack free (sarcastic) speech, it's no contest.

Seriously... Everyone's jumping to the conclusion that the Women's Studies professor is a complete psycho biatch but without reading the actual article I'm going to withhold judgment form both sides.

Although from being around my husband and his colleagues for the past 6 years, I will place money on the fact that the article wasn't funny and they said stupid shiat but were to dense to realize what they were saying was stupid.

LOL you can tell who didn't RTFA.

Also, how do engineering students know enough about sex to be able to joke about it?

Save that (a) doing so would img.fark.net their server and (b) the HTML pages and PDF (http://oralotis.org/oralotisissues/volume20issue4/volume20issue4.pdf) have evidently been yanked from their website.

I was wondering if the article specified the Engineer was male or not, myself....

Yeah, what if the prof isn't a psycho biatch? Maybe the article was really retarded and not funny, like Scary Movie.

Something like this happened back in my college years. A joke piece was written in the school newspaper giving advice to the reader on how to pick up girls, best way was to use ruffies or the pick u line "What does this rag smell like to you?" The office for Women's Advancement (or something like that) went ballistic.

What is is about college newspapers? Can we have mandatory humor classes? Cuz what passes for humor in these cases isn't even close.

ToxicVodka 2008-03-18 03:41:39 PM
FTFA: "For myself, personally, I think some of the content in the paper is meant to be humorous," he said. He added that engineers "have taken a lot of flak for being engineers," and are often the subject of jokes about engineers rarely touching women or getting laid.

Notice that this part is not in quotes? Ha ha. The author actually used the term "getting laid"...

CraicBaby: LOL you can tell who didn't RTFA.

Wait... what? It was satire. Unless canada doesn't protect satirical speech.

FTFA: "The language ... is really reminiscent of anal rape," she said. "They basically say, 'Don't let her get away. This isn't over until you say it is.' This language is incredibly hostile and incredibly problematic, and in my opinion, not only has no place in a university student newspaper, has no place in a newspaper period."

Without the original piece, I have no way of knowing exactly what was said. Her opinion means that the writer can't express his opinion. How is that right?

The Charter doesn't apply to universities.

To me, Women's Studies as a major in University is like majoring in Philosophy...

ie. if you graduate with a degree in Philosophy you can basically only get a job teaching Philosophy. It's like a vicious circle.

Engineer's write? From the way they write I always thought they just dipped a chicken's feet into an ink well, let it cluck around some paper for a while and somehow the other engineers know what it says.

I had a friend in uni who told me rape wasn't funny and I shouldn't joke about it when I said "I got raped on that test". She evidently then went and brought this subject up in her women's studies class, where I was roundly condemned for being an insensitive clod.

Next set of exams she told me how she'd been "killed" on an exam. I asked her if she thought murder was funny. Evidently it doesn't work that way... rape is the only word you're not allowed to use in that context.
