Not too bad for a minor poet.

Everyone here should go buy the cd Field Commander Cohen. It is a live album that rocks.

Yup, and I'm going to see him.

He neither saddens nor depresses me. His music calms, soothes and fills me with warmth like a bowl of hot soup on a cold day. One of the true all-time greats. He has touched my life immeasurably.

Do you really think "Dress Rehersal Rag" and "Avalanche" are soothing?

Any Cohen fan that does not have "Field Commander Cohen: Live Tour 1979" in their collection, I HIGHLY recommend it...
simply wonderful sound quality [especially for the time], and a wicked awesome backing band [Passenger] and backup singers [incl. Jennifer Warren]. Good/interesting song selection as well. He's in pretty good voice too... right between his clear 70's voice and his gravelly late 80's voice.

/ anybody else think that
a) on "Songs of Love and Death" his voice is pretty awful, but his songwriting is awesome?
b) "Death of a Ladies' Man" is one big epic FAIL?
[ok...ok... it has one or two good songs...]

On Cohen's covers: I really, really hate Depeche Mode but Martin Gore's cover of Coming Back to You is absolutely amazing. Incredible interpretation of the song.

I'm really late for the party
I heard Jeff Buckley doing Hallelujah a couple of months ago and then heard the original a few weeks back. Love them both.

Leonard Cohen on tour? Why announce it? Everybody knows.

carmody 2008-03-18 02:05:25 PM
Duke: Well, not every tune is the same, of course. But people tend to have this impression that all his music is "sad" or "depressing" because it's downtempo and quiet, introspective and given to poetic Biblical allegory; I think that's an inaccurate characterization of his body of work on the whole.

Led Zeppelin totally farking rocks, but "Goin' to California" doesn't provide the best piece of evidence to back that up.

Two words: John Cale.

I've regrettably never seen Leonard live. Missed getting into an Austin City Limits taping once by this much.

Have you (or anyone else) ever listened to Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat" which is all Cohen songs? I've known about it for years and years, but I've never heard it.

Nope, i'm afraid i have not, good sir.
Is it an album? Is it a semi-recent release? or an older one?
She's a pretty good singer, and that's all I know about her.
ie. I've never looked up any info on her. All i knew was that she sang with Cohen in the 70's and 80's. I never even knew she put out albums.

/thanks for the spelling correction on her name, btw
//sorry i couldnt' help you.

carmody 2008-03-18 04:09:31 PM
Yeah, that Jennifer Warnes record is pretty good. She was Cohen's backup singer for a long time before that.

DrBenway [TotalFark] 2008-03-18 04:51:19 PM
Came out in '86 or '87... I thought it was a little older than that. Found this video (pops). Also didn't know that Stevie Ray Vaughn played on it. And it was a long time before I connected that she was the "Jennifer" who used to sing on the Smothers Brothers show.

Word. Plus, it doesn't have Suzanne on it (not that I dislike the song, but one can hear it too often).

I can't believe i made that title mistake.
that's what i get for not having it right in front of me when i wrote that.

I thoroughly enjoy much of his music. But he is thoroughly demonic in the Kierkegardian sense

/i know I misspelled Kierkegard

The man's brilliant. Pure and simple. The first time I heard "Everybody Knows" I listened to that one song non-stop for 3 days.

/used to be depressive with a bit of OCD

I've had an idea for some time that I would really love to hear Tom Waits sing that song.

I would enjoy that, but I'd LOVE Tom Waits covering "Tower of Song", "The Future", "If It Be Your Will" or "Hallelujah"....

a Tom Waits (or maybe, Shane McGowan) "Hallelujah" would be awesome. It would make any 'Jeff Buckley' or 'John Cale' arguments moot.

Flipside...
...Have Leonard Cohen covering Tom Waits... "Tango Till They're Sore"... I shudder picturing it...

There Is A War (new window)

I listen to that song three or four times a week and have since I found it on Utube. Lenny just that to people.

The Dylan picture is funny. And I'll bet his conversation with Mickey Rourke is very highbrow.

Thanks for the tip on Field Commander, guys. I just grabbed it from Pirate Bay.
