I'm shocked..... SHOCKED I TELL YOU!

Yanks_RSJ 2008-03-17 06:56:12 PM
...and water is wet.

This is literally the least surprising "coming out" since Lance Bass. Everyone in the world knew Michael Stipe was gay since "Shining Happy People."

He came out years ago.

Wow. Now I have to rethink all those REM songs, with him singing about a fetus crawling up the end of his bed and the sky falling and pushing palaces TO A DUDE .

dramatools [TotalFark] 2008-03-17 07:40:45 PM
That puts the casting for the "End of the World as We Know It" video in a new light.

/Can't find a still of dilapidated house emo-boy, so use your fuzzy memory.

Your handle is the coolest. The. coolest. Today I awoke with that song in my head for some reason.

I thought this was common knowledge. I coulda swore that he came out back in the mid 90s. I'd know this as my sister adores R.E.M. and I would have known if Stipe was photographed stepping in a pile of dog crap while out to pick up a gallon of milk at the store.

This is only news to someone who reads Us Magazine.

Uhm... way to be 20 years too late to be relevant!

They release their next album, Accelerate, on April 1.

Ah. That's why. GOTCHA, Devotchka!

I don't remember the exact VH1 show, Behind the Music or Legends or Storytellers or whatever, but he said in it that he was bi.

I was telling people that in middle school when Shiny Happy People came out. Did they listen? Noooooo!

But does he have AIDS?

/If I remember correctly, this was also a rumour around the time everyone figured that he was gay. You know - around 18 years ago.

Welcome to the Machine [TotalFark] 2008-03-17 10:33:56 PM
People had to "figure out" that he is gay?

Wow.

I knew he was gay before I knew what gay was

I never asked and he never told.

bluorangefyre 2008-03-17 10:58:57 PM
As I recall, on their Behind the Music, Stipe said he felt it was blindingly obvious that he was since he was wearing mascara onstage during their early years.

Don't be silly. If mascara on stage means gay, that means Dave Navarro is....
You know, you may have a point.

Fomby_Belcher 2008-03-17 11:53:33 PM
Well then he's perfect for REM, considering that the band SUCKS BALLS.

I remember seeing a tv interview with him on Much Music or Much More Music, [MTV for Canada] a few years ago, and he got asked the old sexuality question. He replied that he doesn't really like labels [ie. straight, gay, or bisexual], but yes, he said, he has slept with women, and has slept with guys as well.

ELF Radio 2008-03-18 01:12:31 AM
Yeah, this is old news.

What really matters is that Stipe kicks ass, is a great lyricist and a phenomenal singer, and is my favorite frontman of all time..... errr, possibly next to Freddie Mercury.

I'm totally straight, i swear.

I thought he came out already 10 years ago.

Why should I care anyway. It's not like he's one of those hot gay guys who I'd like to see kissing another hot gay guy.

rynthetyn 2008-03-18 02:44:36 AM
SilentStrider: i actually did not know this.

I didn't either, mainly because that would have required more than a passing interest in REM, and me actually caring enough to pay attention to Stipe's preferences.

Subsonicmonkey 2008-03-18 02:46:33 AM
He definitely talked about this in the Behind The Music, which was like 10 years ago.

viccellini 2008-03-18 02:56:35 AM

Still doesn't change the fact that they are my favourite band.

/listened to a leaked copy of Accelerate today
//not half bad.

mishmashmusic 2008-03-18 09:37:38 AM
When I was living in Athens about 15 years ago, I would see Stipe around town with a group of his flamboyant "friends". That took away any doubts I would have had at the time.

/Murmur, Reckoning, Document

sararenne 2008-03-18 10:46:06 AM
I remember, not only that he came out in the '90's, but at their induction to the rock and rock hall of fame last year, he thanked, or mentioned a partner, or boyfriend or something.

CheeseEatingBulldog 2008-03-18 10:56:22 AM
I thought shining happy people was a dead give away....

Hey, did you guys hear that the dudes from Erasure are gay, too?

/It's Shiny Happy People, people
//Own damn near every REM album
///Even the terrible ones
////Really hoping that the new one isn't a repeat of Up or Around the Sun

I agree... I hate buying their newest CD, listening to it once or twice, shrug my shoulders, take the CD out of the player, and put in Fables or Murmur.
