I'm beyond psyched for this album to drop. June 10 can't get here soon enough.

And they're coming to the Pemberton Festival! I can't wait to finally see these guys live.

I don't think I like that song all that much. It sounds like a joke. Jim's gone weird since he split from his gf.

I have the NPR recording. It exists somewhere out there but if you gmail me I'll send you the .zip. It's legit for sharing, got it from their forums.

I love MMJ. They're really the best thing to listen to at work, they make the time just fly by. Then, when you get home from work, they're really the best thing to listen to while you're drinking/smoking/snorting/shooting. Really adds to the experience.

I have a bit of a problem with My Morning Jacket.

They are good.
Really quite good.
That is all.

My problem is many of my less educated and younger friends who know very little about music thank that they are "Oh my God they are SOOO f*cking awesome!!!" and "this is so original!" etc...

They go on and on about how great and stellar My Morning Jacket is ad nauseum. To me My Morning Jacket is simply what a good rock band should be. Period.

btw--these are my same friends who think Wolfmother is the most savage and heavy radical hard rock band ever.
Easy to think that when you have never heard Melvins,Kyuss or Sleep etc.

My Morning Jacket are indeed good though.

I really do like MMJ. Especially their last one. And the live DVD.

I think "Gideon" is one of the top 10 songs of the 21st Century.

This one...not so much. Sorry.

I like "Z" about 10x better than "it still moves". The latter does not spark my interest, except for maybe one or two or three songs on it... ["Dancefloors" is pretty good]. Seems like most of the album is folky echoey dirges. And why does the tracklist have only 12 songs on the cover and in the booklet, but the cd itself has 14? which ones don't have titles? argh.
I do like their newer live album tho.... it's rockin'. Great guitars and drums, but Jim James' voice seems to be alittle ragged.
Its' booklet was pretty funny, too. [ever notice how the track list on the back cover swaps one song for another from each cd tracklist?]
Seemingly many critics say that "Z" is like their "Ok Computer", and i agree with that statement. A turning-point album for the band. Killer Awesome song after song. No filler.
[ok... "Fitter happier" on "OK" was filler, but on Z there is none to my ears.] Great songwriting, singing, musicianship, atmosphere, production values/quality, etc. etc.

like others in this thread, i'm stoked for their June release as well...

Y'all think this song is good ...

The show was AWESOME!

/Yo La Tengo played, too. They were good.
//The Whigs opened up. They were really good.

I am going to New York City this summer to see them play at Radio City. I am so excited. I got into them a little while ago and never had a chance to see them live.

Unfortunately, I can't lsiten to this song. The video isn't working in this damn computer lab for some reason. But I think every single one of their albums has been better than the one before it, and I can't wait for the new one.

Gideon and Golden are my fave MMJ tracks........

http://www.npr.com/music^ to stream the whole Whigs/YLT/MMJ sets, which has MUCH better versions of all 8 new tracks.

Why does it matter if your friends go on about MMJ? I'm sure you like them for different reasons that I do, or the next guy for that matter. I think the Grateful Dead is the best band ever, but I wouldn't expect my friends or anyone else to think the same. Opinions. Everyone is entitled to one.

craigdamage 2008-03-17 01:53:57 PM
You are correct Garcia!

My friends just annoy me because they get too excited.
I probably enjoy Stravinsky's "Firebird" or Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain" in exactly the same way a monkey enjoys a shiny inanimate object.

My Morning Jacket is very good.
I have been obsessed with very good music for a very long time and have consumed it passionately over the years.
I am just unable to jack off all over myself about My Morning Jacket like some of my less musical knowledgeable buddies.

....but they are really good.

I was lucky enough to see MMJ and Yo La Tengo twice this week at SXSW--once at the Austin Music Hall, where the above-linked NPR show was recorded, and a few days previous at a party sponsored by IFC.com at the Parish. The Parish is a small club in Austin that holds about 400, and coincidentally was the first place I ever saw MMJ play back in 2002 or so. And all I had to do was stand in line for 1.5 hours in the rain Monday morning to get free tix. Then stand in line for another 2 hours before doors opened at the Parish. But they had an open bar, so I guess we're even.

At any rate, both shows were totally kick-ass, with the scales tipping a bit more towards the Parish show, if only for the intimacy factor. I thought the new material sounded great. Evil Urges had a great mid-tempo groove to it, and Highly Suspicious is the greatest song Prince never wrote.

I've seen MMJ several times over the years, I'm always really impressed by how good they sound live, both in terms of putting on a great show, as well as sound quality. And it was great to see them in a small venue setting once again, since I prob won't get to experience that again for quite a while.

I'm the same way. Just bringing a little snark to the thread. My point was just that everyone enjoys different music, some more quality than others. I'm able to jack off all over myself about Kind of Blue.

Okonokos is never a bad place to start. That's the first time I heard them. Bonnaroo late night show is going to be awesome.

YAWWWWWWWWNNNN...

Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize how many NPR hosts and Pitchfork columnists were on Fark. Carry on, and I'll check back after the Jeff Tweedy circle-jerk finishes.

Well, that was offbeat enough to entice me to wander over to YouTube. I watched a series of chording mantras, (including a waste of the Pops) mostly adorned by a repetitive vocal line that began, far to often, on the dominant 5th and wandered to the tonic. Not much else.
