I have family in Chengdu, and at the zoo there, you can hold the baby pandas for pretty cheap considering that they're endangered.

I'm saying, boycott the Chinese Olympics. Because if we're allowing the Chinese government to give it a pro-commie slant, we're going down a slippery slope. The Olympic movement has plenty of chinks in its armor already.

In the opening ceremonies at the Olympics, each country delegation marches into the stadium, in alphabetical order, except for the host nation, and Greece. One is first, one is last, I forget which. But they all carry their own flag. It would be interesting if a bunch carried a Tibet flag.
The Olympica are already politicized anyway, might as well make it worth it.

hexadecibel 2008-03-16 09:23:14 PM
Not that I condone any of the violence going down in Tibet, but people don't often look at Tibet's history, or the fact the first Dalai Lama was ironically put in power by the Chinese army. Talk about asking for the steak and then biting the hand that feeds.

hexadecibel: but people don't often look at Tibet's history, or the fact the first Dalai Lama was ironically put in power by the Chinese army

The first Dalai Lama got his title from Altan Khan, Mongol ruler, in 1578. But go ahead and babble nonsense anyway.

Tibet on fire = Meh, there's always a riot somewhere.

Cute pandas = ooo looksie!!

So what we really need to get people in the west up and about on the Tibet issue is to set some cute pandas on fire.

hexadecibel: ...or the fact the first Dalai Lama was ironically put in power by the Chinese army...

Not trying to be snarky here, but I'd like to see your citations on that "fact". Since the 'liberation' of Tibet in 1959, the current Dalai Lama has been living in exile.

The first Dalai Lama was Dge-'dun-grub-pa (1391-1475), a monk who founded the Tashilhunpo monastery in central Tibet and who was the third successor of the founder of the Geluk school. The title "Dalai" is a transcription of the Tibetan "Ta le", which means "Ocean [of Wisdom]" and was given to the third Lama by Altan Khan.

Would the Altan Khan was the Chinese government that you mentioned?

Would the Altan Khan be the Chinese government you mentioned?

It was Altan Khan who initially installed the Dalai Lama as an institution, but it was the Qing dynasty's influence over Tibet in the 18th century which cemented the Dalai Lama's rule.

So he is incorrect in stating that the Chinese installed the first Dalai Lama, but he is quite correct in saying that the Dalai Lama institution was bolstered by the Qing after they took over Tibet during an era of chaos in the country.

The irony goes both ways though: the Qing actually had a somewhat hands-off approach. They installed and maintained the Dalai Lama, but didn't formally try to annex Tibet. Emperor Qianlong drew on Buddhism for support, while the modern situation is reversed - the Communists insisted on destorying the feudal order in Tibet, which is quite the opposite of what the Qing dynasty did, they simply let the status quo go, and were happy to simply have Tibetans on their side.

Still, hexadecibel does make a valid point. Tibetan history has been intertwined with Chinese history forever. There are plenty of legitimate claims in saying that Tibet was effectively a Chinese protectorate at several stages over the centuries. That, and the fact that the Chinese relationship with the Dalai Lama instituion is more complex than some people think.

Many "pro-Tibetan" Westerners see it as a very black and white issue. It ain't. Many pro-Tibetan Westerners are also ignorant, idealistic hippies who think pre-1959 Tibet was some sort of Shangri-La. It wasn't.

I figure it'll be right after the Olympics when China starts calling in her debts, militarily kicking the crap outta all it's Asian neighbors and generally start taking over the world. By the way, eating panda meat gives the Chinese hard-ons.
