Dignitas is a wonderful organization. Leave to the Swiss to advance the cause of liberty before America and Britain.

It's not like people during a bout of depression can just walk in an do it. It offers compassionate solutions to people's problems. If only 49 states in America had such a view.

/Props to Oregon (new window).

I don't know. I don't have a problem with terminally-ill patients, like in Oregon's law, but this seems like it could be for people who aren't suffering form any physical maladies, but just depression. And yeah, depression is terrible, but it can be overcome. This Dignitas company is just encouraging people to take death instead of working through their problems.

Maybe it's a drive-in brothel.

And if it's not, I have a business to start.

The problem is mainly foreigners with fake documentation. Swiss law mandates that they do an investigation and the industry can not have windfall profits. Depressives often have such stark cognitive issues that it's better for the government to regulate the industry with an iron fist. I see where you are coming from, and I agree with you in terms of treatable mental illness, but there are cases where mental illness can get so bad that Swiss law allows people to seek a peaceful exit. I've never been able to figure out where the line can be drawn between a person's liberty and protecting them from themselves because they are not able to exercise proper judgment. The radical libertarians really cloud the issue, and the libertarian position of free-will is becoming more and more outdated every month as science contradicts it.

I'm trying to find any studies that document the suicide rate amongst people who were rejected by Dignatas and did it themselves. If that rate is high, then that offers the government justification to somehow involve themselves in the person getting treatment.

It wasn't legal though. It's legal in Switzerland. When legal, the government can, if it wishes, effectively legislate and regulate the industry. Remember the problems that back alley abortions produced?

The only opposition I have to assisted suicide (in most circumstances) is if the health insurance companies get their mitts into it.

That's awesome! No bloody mess to come home to. No pulverized bits-o-bone and soft tissue to pick out of the subfloor behind the ceiling to keep the stink down after the patch-job before the house sells. Seems like money well spent in everyone's best interest. And the depressed dying person still gets to go out with a bang. Almost like not dying alone. Is it really so wrong to think we need one of these in Vegas?

Props to Oregon, indeed! I had no idea they had such a thing there.

Really, with the amount of overpopulation we deal with on this planet, I really don't see why this would be a problem. People choose to take this path, and although I don't agree with it (I see suicide as a selfish act), it's their choice to make.

It always reminds me of the story of the guy who threatened to kill himself. He ended up gunned down by police because it's a crime to commit suicide. Mmmmk.

How do you punish someone who committed suicide?

StangAviator 2008-03-16 09:38:02 PM

He's helped a lot of people, and he put his own life on the line to do it. That's more than anyone will ever say about you. You're just pissed that those people weren't forced to suffer.

Nobody of legal age needs a nanny! Whether you think they're crazy, or not, it is their right to decide how they want to live and if/how they want to die.
