I've never seen that myself, but my boss tells me that more than one guy with that crap on his computer has come through the shop. I had another guy who was adamant about not giving out his account password, then was also adamant about me erasing the drive before shipping it back under warranty. Makes me wonder if he had something to hide or if he's just anal about his data...

Heh, my brother ended up turning someone in for that. He worked in student support at SLU, and the kid brought in his laptop FULL of kiddie porn.

It was apparently a little awkward, since the kid was one of my brother's friends. He turned him in anyway.

What is it that makes a person wake up one day, look at a child, and think to himself "that's sexy"? I just don't get it. There must be a particular set of life experiences that lead to this outcome, but you never hear that discussed. What's the psychological underpinning of pedophilia?

It's not about physical attraction most of the time. It's about a lack of psychological maturity. It's about control. They can't handle age appropriate relationships, so they shop younger. They look for someone who is easy to fool, easy to both control mentally and physically if need be. Well, for most pedophiles anyway. The pedophiles who rape AND murder are a whole other ball of wax.

And the reason you don't hear this talked about much is because people think foolishly if you don't talk about a problem it goes away. This is why I love psychology and sociology so much. All of the really nasty things about human nature get talked about with the same frequency as the really sweet and awesome things about human nature.

turns out it was his granddaughter whoring herself out for her online boyfriends.

Back when hard drive space was more limited, I was cleaning up a guy's machine to free up space. I found a 200+MB PowerPoint file. Since I was learning about how to do relevant PowerPoint presentations, I opened it hoping I could learn some tips. Well, the guy had converted hundreds of pron images into a slide show (I assume for freedom to work elsewhere).

I had to report it to my manager. He laughed it off over my insistence that it could have been one of my female co-workers who found it.

/no, did not keep the file

From my understanding, pedophilia is just a sexual preference. Yeah, some pedophiles do go out and rape kids, some manipulate them into sex, some have consentual sex (which is more of a gray area than rape and coercion), but there are others that manage to abstain from sex and kiddie porn.

Splenda: What totally blows my mind is why they leave it in the first place. Do they really think nobody will notice (or care) or is it just general computer-stupidity.

I think that a possible cause is that when their computer breaks, then they can't clean it up because it's broken. So they take it in and try to get control over their files. Kind of a chicken/egg situation.

Make the hd a secondary or connect it via usb, you having local admin right should allow you to view the content of his hard drive. unless it's encrypted with PGP or something, then you'd need the same encryption on your computer. It's not like its hard :P

There's nothing in your user folder that could cause a computer problem. There's really no reason for a tech to look there in the first place.

The guy who found it should be fired for looking around the customers hard drive and invading their privacy, even if he ended up catching a sicko. That's the kind of place you don't take your computer to in order to get fixed. All of your private info on your hard drive will be compromised.

I think it's reasonable to assume that a lot of sexual abuse of children goes unreported and unresolved. These children grow up without normal sexual outlets and abuse children, too. You can say that they do this because they are confused, horny, or just jacked up, but it doesn't make any difference. That doesn't mean they're not at fault, but I guess you can also say they never had a chance, too.

On the other hand, I have a friend who was sexually abused as a child and, with counseling and spiritual support, she now leads a very healthy and normal life. Which makes me think that no one is beyond help.

Yeah... kids are too sexy... THAT's why people are pedophiles. Being aroused by children, regardless of how they're dressed, is NOT normal. Now, I think it's retarded for parents to dress their kids that way, it just has nothing to do with pedophilia.

I don't know about this place, but the backup software we use where I work displays filenames as it recovers them. So if you bring in a failing hard drive/borked operating system/anything else that might require a backup, there's a good possibility we'll catch a glimpse of some of your filenames as they go by (assuming we're doing our jobs and making sure your computer is actually being backed up). And porn files of all sorts tend to have very descriptive names.

Drubell 2008-03-16 04:28:52 PM
So last week I was on a plane going from San Antonio to Atlanta.

While on the plane, I took out a book to read, and the older gentleman next to me took out his laptop. I was reading but suddenly, some movement on his screen caught my eye. With but a moment of curiousity, I took a look at what was on the screen.

It was a video of a bunch of kids playing soccer and running around in general, in their little soccer uniforms. The kids couldn't have been more than 14.

I turned back to my book. Maybe he was watching his son? Maybe he's a coach and he was watching the plays the kids were making and seeing what they're doing wrong? I didn't know, didn't matter.

Over time I noticed that he had multiple saved videos of all types of children playing sports and running around who couldn't be older than 14. I began to get a little uncomfortable, but I decided not to say anything; imagine how silly it would be if I was just thinking things that weren't there.

In the end I don't know what to make of it, but since I did not end up with semen in my hair, I suppose that's all that matters.

Never seen the show. Don't want to. I think the subject matter is too sick for a TV show and it's completely out of line for a TV show to be doing the police's job. I just read a lot of clinical literature since clinical psychology is my area of study.

It's hard to have consensual sex with an 8-year-old though. Manipulation is more likely. That's a kind of rape. And sure, I'm sure a lot of people manage to abstain from doing things that they have temptations to do because they know it's bad. Drugs, sex, stealing, etc. That doesn't actually address the underlying cause of the temptation though. My post attempted to address that. Yours, however, would've made BF Skinner wet since all it was focused on was behavior.

It's a fetish. You can't understand them unless you have them. There are a lot of weird ones out there, like foot fetishism, sadomasochism, vore, etc. It's hard to say what triggers them. In some cases you can spot a root cause, but in others it seems like people were born with the interest.

In other news, when you take your computer to be serviced, it seems like the tech immediately roots through all the image files looking for questionable stuff. Seems a bit dodgy.

1. Fill hardrive with weird, unique, but legal pron
2. Turn it in to the Peek Squad to be worked on
3. Profit: Sue the pants off Best Buy when the Peek Squad snoop posts the porn somewhere.

misterblint 2008-03-16 04:38:57 PM
A few years back when I was working as a computer tech, a guy brought in some ZIP 100 Disks and asked if we could transfer the information on those disks onto a CD. This was a service we provided, so it was nothing unusual. I took the disks back to my workbench and set about making the transfer while he waited. When I got some "unformatted disk" errors, I went back onto the sales floor to ask if he had had any problems reading the disks. What he forgot to tell me is that the disks are formatted for a Macintosh. Since we don't have any Macs at work, I offered to bring the disks home and transfer them onto a CD for him. He said that would be fine and told me he would pick up the completed CD the following morning.

That night, I began the transfer process and started doing something else. When I glanced at the computer names, a couple filenames that were being transferred caught my eye. When the disk was done copying, I looked at some of the files and was absolutely stunned to find child pornography. There were hundreds of hardcore photos and .mpgs of children in sexual poses and engaged in sexual situations with other children and adults. I'm not talking about 14 or 15 year old topless Scandanavian teens at the beach or teen camwhores flashing their breasts or twentysomething women who look young pretending to be teenagers, I'm talking pre-teen girls, some probably as young as 7 or 8 years old.

Now, I'm not the biggest fan of children, but I was shocked, enraged and confused. I finished the file transfers, made an extra copy of the disk in case it wass needed as evidence (which I considered destroying lest it get me in trouble) and then erased all traces of his files from my hard drive and said nothing to the man when he came in to pick up the disks the following day.

I was absolutely certain it was unethical of me to violate the man's privacy by looking at his files. However, I transferred the files to my hard drive in order to facilitate faster CD burning, so in a sense, I was responsible for the content. Thus, I believe I can justify to my conscience and my creator whatever violation of trust I might have committed.

Since I had just started the job I wasn't sure what position my company had about viewing customer files, but I was almost certain that, whatever the policy, they would make an exception in this case. After all, I technically witnessed a crime, therefore I could be an accessory to the crime if I withhold this information.

The very next day, I told my boss about it. He was as disgusted as I was and actually angry with me that I didn't say anything to him sooner. My boss called the police, turned over the disk I had made and the guy was arrested.

Turns out the man was a local government official who had frequent contact with children in the community. He apparently had been investigated in the past because of some accusations, but had never been arrested. According to court documents from his trial, some of the emails that they found on his computer showed that he had contact with people (both men and women) who sent him pictures of their children, pimped their children out to him and others and had let this man and others watch them have sex with their own children.

The trial never was completed because the guy pleaded out. I think he ended up getting 6 years which means he would've been released in about 3 more years.

He ended up dying of complications from a stroke less than an week after arriving in prison. That is to say, stroke is the "official" cause of death.

Cheers!

Indeed I suppose the gist of the thread was people are trying to dress children as sexily as possible might have some relationship to kids being sexy, but you sir have missed the point.

People want their lil princesses to be pretty as possible and proceed to try and dress them that way, worse designers make it a viable option. On the other hand the pyschology portion also exists, and they really dont give a rats ass as to how the children dress, but are motivated by other factors.

The original point is you are drawing an ENTIRELY new group to the pedophile table with the hooker lines.

Yeah this issue bothers me, but ethically it seems like an analog of "attorney-client" privelage really should apply between the public and computer repair people. Though it's messed up, I don't think it's fair of technical types to take advantage of their client's ignorance, even if it's to right a wrong.

Yes, Emptying them. It's the most expedient, and effective thing to do, not looking at every damned one of them!

I'm amazed at the amount of people that don't know they should empty their caches, every once in a while.

Most people that are caught with kiddie porn, are caught through credit card transactions. Hense, Pete Townshend.
