It's interesting that it happens enough so that they actually need a "Wrong Door" unit.

Maybe if the LAPD had basic reading and writing skills they wouldn't have such a problem.

These increasingly frequent raids, 40,000 per year by one estimate, are needlessly subjecting nonviolent drug offenders, bystanders, and wrongly targeted civilians to the terror of having their homes invaded while they're sleeping, usually by teams of heavily armed paramilitary units dressed not as police officers but as soldiers. Last year, Jenkins built eight caskets required after such incidents - up from four the year before.

"It's really good in terms of the city image," said Laura Filitoff, commanding officer of the fiscal operations division, which oversees the supply section in which Jenkins works.

"Our cops go in, and they shoot the wrong homeowner. We fix the problem. It builds good will in the community."

Practice?! What are we talking about here? Practice. Not a real swat raid, but practice. Practice! Come one, man! It's just practice.

...or something like that.

//Did anyone see that ER reality show where some fat guy was shot in a police raid. They had the wrong house, wrong guy. Fat guy lives, his buddy brings him a hamburger in the ER. The fat guy tells the cops to get lost....lawsuit...blah blah. comedy gold.

No, I really don't think it does.

You know, whatever happened to establishing a perimeter and knocking on the door? Yes, I know, it isn't as "cool" and the cops don't get to play with their toys that the government provides.

We're just there to fix the door. For the most part, people are really happy we're repairing these things. They're real happy to see their needs are being met.....

I don't see how this fixes the cities images. The police are still seen as incompetent thugs knocking down doors. The only reason that people are nice to the repair guy is because he didn't knock down the door and they want him to do a good job.

Crosshair: You know, whatever happened to establishing a perimeter and knocking on the door?

I imagine that stopped being effective with drug crimes about the same time humanity invented indoor plumbing.

Look, I'm no fan of the drug war, but some of the stuff in this thread thus far is silly.

People are saying the cops should learn to read, but TFA states they raided the address that the suspect had been putting down as his address - and that he'd actually previously lived there. People remark that it apparently happens so much they need a unit. TFA states that the "unit" is this one guy. He fixed eight last year, and four the year before. This in a city of 18 million people?

I don't think one door knocked down in error every month or three in a huge metropolitan area is something to get too worked up about.

That's what I thought, until I read the farking article.

4 in one year is not that bad. And the example from the article had a reasonable possibility of the guy being at that location.

in?.......probably not

gluestickralph 2008-03-16 04:23:03 PM
To bad you couldn't know ahead of time when they were going to break into the wrong house. About 25 pounds of white phosphorus and magnesium blowing back out the door on them would be fun to watch and maybe even make them hesitate the next time they decide to shoot some old woman or child in the "lawful" pursuit of there "duties". Protect and serve my ass. The transformers movie got is much closer to the truth.

ceejayoz: I imagine that stopped being effective with drug crimes about the same time humanity invented indoor plumbing.

No, the cops are too lazy to simply turn off the water to the house. As many people have said, if all the evidence can be destroyed in one flush, it isn't worth it. If someone is REALLY a dealer, then they have far more drugs than could ever hope to be destroyed with a toilet or two.

However cops are motivated by asset forfeiture laws and being able to make the arrest numbers that they often go to great lengths to bust people who are not a problem.

Many departments have door repair services for things like repairing doors after DOA or person down runs where no ones left to secure the house. Also there are many times no one will come out to secure a business after a burglary at night or on weekends/holidays. There is also the age old fight on police/fire runs on who's going to do the door. Police want fire to use their cool tools instead of their feet but fire doesnt want to get shot by a possibly crazy homeowner. No one wants the report either. Most Dept's use pic's and satellite photos before they go hit a house so there are no suprises, like blocked alleys, junk in back yards, dogs, video systems. I've even seen warrants that now look published using photos that go along with descriptions so the judge is clear on what they want to do.

That's low-middle class for LA. Check out the price of housing, insurance, fast food and fuel if you think otherwise.

ceejayoz: I don't think one door knocked down in error every month or three in a huge metropolitan area is something to get too worked up about.

There's a difference between this and what has happened in other areas of the country. Apparently the LAPD knows how to read an address, a map, and house numbers; it was just an issue of the guy lying (to which I might ask why they didn't stake the place out before busting in). In other places, SWAT teams have busted into the wrong house entirely- the completely wrong house number or address. People have been killed by the police in those cases.

I'm willing to grant that SWAT teams can be needed, but IMO, very often they're used more to justify their budget than because of any real danger to the public. It's not exactly serving the public interest to take a highly trained group of a dozen heaving armed and armored people and bust down doors in a no-knock dynamic entry to a house where somebody was only accused of selling dimebags of pot with no violent record.

Come on, Fark, You're (please note the ONLY correct way to denote a contraction of the phrase 'you are') slipping.

When they kick out your front door
How you gonna come?
With your hands on your head
Or on the trigger of your gun

When the law break in
How you gonna go?
Shot down on the pavement
Or waiting in death row

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh, Guns of Brixton

The money feels good
And your life you like it well
But surely your time will come
As in heaven, as in hell

You see, he feels like Ivan
BORN under the Brixton sun
His game is called survivin'
At the end of the harder they come

You know it means no mercy
They caught him with a gun
No need for the Black Maria
Goodbye to the Brixton sun

You can crush us
You can bruise us
But you'll have to answer to
Oh-the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
Oh, the guns of Brixton
