In Whitewater, the effort to discover Adams' identity included examining his e-mails and Web site registration, running a license plate check on a man suspected of being Adams (he wasn't), and suggesting city officials conduct surveillance at the dedication of a restored historic landmark on the chance he might be there.

Stories like this are common these days. But nobody cares, so long as THEY aren't the ones being investigated.

As someone who just moved to Wisconsin.. i can tell you that outside of perhaps (from what I've read) Milwaukee and the problem areas there, there isn't much else for cops to be worried about in this state.

Hell last night at our huge St Pattys day party, there was a State Trooper.. I asked him how busy he gets with crime.. he said "there isn't any.. so i mostly help with stranded motorists".

what an asshole. let the blogger have his say.
obviously, if you're going to use resources to track him down instead of improving yourself, you need to no longer be police chief.

FTA: He said the efforts... were aimed at seeking a dialogue with the blogger to address his complaints about the city. "I think the impetus was to try to engage in some civil discourse with that person."

Riiiiiiight..... If by "Seeking a dialogue" you mean "kicking the crap out of and planting evidence on" then maybe.

If they want a dialogue then why not just write an open letter in the local paper?

I wonder if our local community could benefit from blogging like this...?

It'd be really funny if "John Adams" turns out to be some 14 year old blogging from Germany.

Pretty much the same thing happened in Berrien Springs, Michigan with the police chief and a blogger.

The police chief was heard making racist remarks and ran his own little fiefdom. He's gone now though...so free speech had some hand in his outster.

Whitewater is a corrupt town. That much is certain. I lived there a few years ago. I remember students having a peaceful anti-war protest and a townie punching one of the protesters in the face. The students had it recorded on tape, the police blamed the students and did nothing. When students tried to get a polling booth on campus a member of the city council stated that students should vote in their parents district and not whitewater. The local judge used drugs, which I witnessed. lots of fun stuff. A great portion of the town is owned by one guy, that can't help things.

erik316wttn 2008-03-16 05:27:39 PM
My wife is from Whitewater and her mom and brothers still live there.

Her mom got a pretty substantial ticket sometime last year from the Whitewater PD because she didn't bring her garbage cans in on trash day, and left them sit out until late the next day.

Yeah, cops in that town are friggin bored.

Gosling [TotalFark] 2008-03-16 05:29:36 PM
I don't quite live there, but my brother is a Whitewater grad and as such I've been in Whitewater many times.

The problems Whitewater faces are that if there aren't classes in session, the place is a ghost town, because classes are the only reason to be in Whitewater, or anywhere else in the area code. Think a town like Starkville, Mississippi, but downgrade college and football team to Division 3, and you've got Whitewater.

Also, the entire town of Whitewater has maybe, MAYBE one snowplow. When it snows, the streets turn into skating rinks.

Grew up in Whitewater, found myself on "the list" in my late teens drinking underage. They'll go to any length to harrass, including setting up 'stings' for underage drinkers and the use of high school age informants from their youth police league. Larry Meyer from the article is one of the worst offenders in that PD (his drug addict brother killed himself in his early 20's). The city is mostly owned by one man, Mr. Katchell, a fat bastard, and the town is mostly republican and ultra conservative. Hell to grow up in. Author Stephen Ambrose left, derided the town as Hell with Picket Fences. It is true the city council will not allow students 10,000 of the 14,000 residents to have their own polling place on campus.

Me, I moved to the next county to get away.

Glad to see that sheriff Joe Arpaio's tactics are spreading.

Closed_Minded_Bastage 2008-03-16 05:59:36 PM
TFA: Adams said his goal is not to tear down his Walworth County community but to improve it. He continues to criticize Coan, whom he charges with failing to address serious problems within the police department.
That includes the actions of a now-retired police investigator whom a prosecutor said destroyed evidence and falsified the results of a search warrant while investigating a local businessman. Coan declined to say whether Larry Meyer was disciplined.

Disciplined??? Hell, if you or I did something like that, we'd find our butt in jail, and rather quickly. Not to cop-bash (but I'm going to do it anyway...) Fark'em, fark'em all!

Brunner defended the officials involved, saying: "They're good people. I think they just wanted to talk to this person. I don't think he (Coan) was trying to stifle anyone's freedom of speech."

Yeah right. If you want to talk to him send him and email or arrange an anonymous phone call. There's no reason you need to know who someone is to talk to them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCWLed98QFM&feature=related

I remember hearing something about one of these hidden conspiracy secrets like this when i was a kid growing up there. And there are plenty in creepy little whitewater.

savagemyth 2008-03-16 06:30:27 PM
Another fact about the Big Brother State in whitewater:

Whitewater was among the first places, before the UK even, to set up "secret" surveillance cameras on telephone poles throughout the town. They were secret, that is, until one day at the local cable provider office, someone pushed a wrong button and everyone in town could tune in to channel 14 and get a view of all the "high crime areas" in realtime video.

Then it was promptly shut down to the public.
