(SFGate) Dumbass If you're on parole and have been arrested 110 times already, you can be fairly certain that hiding behind a park dumpster and yelling at passersby while holding crack will get you arrest number 111 - whether or not you feign a heart attack   (sfgate.com) divider line 36

Can't we just stop wasting resources and money on these pathetic people and find a way to deal with them? How about reopening some military bases and using them to detox and store these folks. After that fails, then put them in jail (where drugs are rampant). Better still, just decriminalize drugs. That way we'd save the big bucks on law enforcement. Hell, it would be cheaper to take a dumptruck load of crack downtown every Friday night and give it away. It would be just as effective in stopping drug use and loads cheaper.

It wouldn't be as effective in stopping drug use. I think you may have left out a word there.

It would be like when your dad catches you smoking and makes you smoke until you puke, but with crack.

Sure it would. A large percentage would OD or kill each other for the drugs.

Actually this is a non-issue. There are plenty of people who wont use drugs regardless of their legality. Just like there are plenty of people who dont smoke even though its perfectly legal. All the dumbasses will just kill themselves off and it saves us the trouble.

yeah and he isn't even a rich celebrity like Robert Downey.

/He is going to play Ironman, which is fitting since Tony Stark was an addict.
//Saw him in an old '80's move ",Less Than Zero, he was playing, and this is a real stretch for him, a drug addict.

Sending people to jail hardens them. The faux "law and order" types typically don't think their cunning plan all the way through. You put at risk people in such a brutal environment as an American prison without care, compassion, and treatment then they will probably be a recidivist once released into a society that tends to operate in a cold neo-social Darwinian manner.

/I think America can learn something from the Nordic states in terms of criminal justice. Hell, while we are at, social welfare too.

A parolee for grand theft also enjoys drugs?

Whoda thunk it? Best to decriminalise drugs and destigmatise these noble creatures.

here in Winterpeg Manitoilet there are 30 known repeat offenders who routinely cost the city taxpayers over $1 million/year for unnecessary emergency services.

/as a society, we must cater to these collective waste of skins WHY

Isn't Norway a hellhole for immigrants? Isn't racism rampant all through the Norwegian society? Isn't Norway the home of hordes of blackmetal-loving blood-drinking idiots with nothing better to do than kill goats and have sex on stage during concerts?

Yeah, that's what I thought...

1. Not really a hellhole. When a society first allows a massive influx, there is a growth process. Americans should know this better than anyone.

2. There are fewer than 500 self-declared racists in Norway. It is a society in adjustment, but the judicial system doesn't have systemic racism like America does.

I wonder what's cheaper, 111 arrests for drug possession or mandatory drug treatment.

If only there were some sort of nearby island that could be used to isolate people like this.

How do you get arrested 110 times and spend any time just out of central booking?

Do they have a frequent visitor punch card?

homerdrew415: If only there were some sort of nearby island that could be used to isolate people like this.

They closed Alcatraz in 1963 because the cost of operating it was too high.

The dilemma is the same as the housing on decommissioned bases like the Presidio and Treasure Island. It costs for services...and the homeless, addicts and parolees are not going to foot the bill.

simpsonfan 2008-03-16 06:48:33 PM
They need to abolish parole. Some people can't live in society, need to be removed from it permanently. This scum already had five stints in prison, he should have never been let out.

It's typically more beneficial, longitudinally, to address the root cause of crime and pathology. The old punish him harder solution just makes things worse. The brutal attitude is why American society is becoming such a festering, injust hellhole. America locks up people up in a feel good manner. It's why states, for example, California, are spending more on prisons than schools. This brutal view is going to have such catastrophic effects that it's worse for America than the "global warming is a myth" stance.

It wouldn't surprise me if Americans started doing what China does with death vans. It will probably be justified because of the tax burden that caring for prisoners costs.

Social determinism is a reality. It isn't always the criminal at fault, sometimes it is society. Anyone who looks at the fact that these sorts of criminals typically come from poverty stricken or problematic backgrounds and says, "punish them harder" is essentially warfare on the unprivileged and mentally ill through the penal system.

The French know a thing or two about it. (new window)
