I think it's a recorder, not an oboe-there is no reed. The other guy is playing one, too.

Thatguy 2008-03-15 03:44:11 PM
No way that's an oboe. Guy #2 is on the recorder for sure. Bon's instrument is some kind of different recorder (different mouthpiece), possibly with a slide-whistle thing on the bottom. It's a weird one, I'll grant you that.

Everybody knows there are only 3 oboe usages in modern music:

1. Crazy For You, Madonna
2. Life in a Northern Town, Dream Academy
3. Pretty much everything by Sufjan Stevens

Check it at about 2:40. Not an oboe?

Dancin_In_Anson: Check it at about 2:40. Not an oboe?

No. It's a bassoon if it's a double-reeded instrument at all, but I couldn't pick out any deep bassoon tones, not that that means anything.

Thatguy: It's a bassoon

That it is...what do I know of woodwinds?

It's not a goddamn bassoon, either. This is a bassoon:

www.musicwithease.com

A bassoon is a deeper woodwind instrument and it's about 4 1/2 feet tall.

I'm not sure exactly what instrument he's playing, but it looks like some sort of recorder with a slide at the bottom.

Bass recorder.

Am I missing something, or is subby implying that AC/DC is bubblegum pop?

phoenixdan: Bass recorder.

This sounds about right. Either that or a magnetronic xylotar.

swahnhennessy 2008-03-15 08:18:28 PM
It's a custom-made kazoo.

Bob Down 2008-03-15 08:20:16 PM
There's a bass recorder and a whistle.

il Dottore 2008-03-15 08:34:19 PM
The instrument Bon Scott is playing in the intro is a tenor recorder without the extended metal mouthpiece (that makes it kind of look like an English Horn). Later he plays a bass recorder. The other guy is playing an alto recorder.

I thought an OBOE is just some drunk guy, no?

/ah prog rock... Is there anything it cant do without seeming pretentious?

I had not heard of that either, but I assume submitter is referring to this gem^.

I missed out on this gem too. They are covering "Buttercup," how timely.

I also never saw this clip. Not too bad. Not great, but not too bad. Prog Rock is hit or miss. You got to have the chops. Although I thought it was more Moody Bluesish the ELPish.

Love the evil metal faces he makes in that!

I *told* my kids that was the original screamo song.

Look for a band called "The Valentines"

Ignorant McNugget 2008-03-16 12:33:29 AM
I enjoyed that more than I've ever enjoyed AC/DC. Does that make me a bad person?

It's a can of cranberry sauce. Or a leprechaun.

I Like Bread 2008-03-16 01:26:38 AM
I took oboe in 3rd grade, and I thought my lungs would explode.

Fraternity's tune "Welfare Boogie" is a fave of mine. Awesome early Bon Scott.

CraicBaby: It's not a goddamn bassoon, either. This is a bassoon:

I know you're long gone, but if you come back check my post again. look at the 2:40 mark. That may not be a bassoon, but it's very much bassoon-like.

/looks like il Dottore pegged them anyway.

musicky 2008-03-16 04:37:01 AM
I've played a bass recorder, so I'm getting a kick, etc... Long story short, it's not a bass recorder. Or an oboe. Or a bassoon.

Wikipedia lists Bon Scott as playing recorder for the band. That's definitely what beard-and-sleeveless guy is playing in the video, but damned if I know what kind of a recorder would have a slide, or a mouthpiece like that. In fact, by definition, I don't think a recorder could have a mouthpiece like that.

dholway [TotalFark] 2008-03-16 01:15:27 PM
I just want to say that you all suck at identifying woodwinds.

Tenor piccolo?

PYROY 2008-03-17 09:24:03 AM
It's obviously a contrabass slide triangle with custom mouthpiece.

Yeah? What's it like?

Thatguy: Everybody knows there are only 3 oboe usages in modern music...

I must add New York Rock Ensemble to that list.
