If this happened in the US people here would be screaming about losing another right and being oppressed by the man. It's all good since it's in Canada.

It seems like a convoluted law. It's ok to sell drinks in plastic bottles because they're re-fillable (although not likely to be used in that way); but, from what I understand, it's easier and more cost-efficient to recycle (aluminum) cans than plastic bottles...

/I guess I'll resolve the issue by not moving to Canada.

Thyomorb 2008-03-15 12:13:40 PM
If only there were some sort of vitreous material from which beverage containers could be made. Someone should invent it. I suggest they start with silica, as it occurs in abundance.

No caffeine!? We must invade this Fascist regime at once and introduce them to the glory that is caffeine.

"I don't want the unsightly sight of a can lying in a ditch, and I owe favors to the guys in the bottling plant who voted for me, so I'm going to steal your merchandise and make you pay me $1240.00. It's all in the name of a better society."

What the hell goes on in policymakers' minds that makes them think it's appropriate to do this to another human being? Maybe it be better if Prince Edward Island was littered with the bodies of dead bureaucrats.

not true. you can have caffiene in cans... but the regulations state that clear beverages cannot have caffiene. so sprite, 7up and Mountain Dew are not allowed to contain caffiene, regardless of can or bottle.

/at least it was last time I checked

That's some fine protectionism there, Lou.

It's also there to protect tourism (hence the littering justification). Tourism and potatoes are stereotypically seen as PEI's main industries.

That said, PEI's got lots of weird laws. There's a limit on how much land a non-resident can own, for example. Though I'm pretty sure that one's to prevent the Irvings from buying up the entire province.

In Ocean Beach on Fire Island, you are not allowed to eat or drink in public in order to keep litter down.

I found out about this law when I got a warning from a cop when I was drinking a bottle of water while waiting for the ferry.

I guess it makes sense, but I felt kind of weird ducking down an alley to finish my drink.

Why not use prison labor or charities to just pick the farking cans up. Typical government, ban it so we can make bank off the fines instead of finding a way to make it work.

nunia 2008-03-15 12:32:08 PM
How's about actually fining people for littering instead of making it impossible to buy a damned Red Bull?

Holy poopcrap, Batman.

moobs 2008-03-15 12:33:28 PM
Javelin22

While there are laws governing what type of pop can contain caffeine, this article has nothing to do with caffeine. In PEI pop/soda must be sold in refillable containers (glass bottles).

In other parts of Canada you can easily buy a can of coke, with caffeine or a can of redbull.

rkane1 2008-03-15 12:34:32 PM
PEI is a small island that only has one bridge to the mainland...keeping landfill to a minimum is a really good idea for them.

As I remember, the soda containers are all glass, with a 40 cent deposit. You can't get big plastic bottles either.

And it's nice to still be able to drink a Coke out of a glass bottle when I visit :)

Their McDonalds also offer McLobster sandwiches...eeew

mikec2003 2008-03-15 12:38:32 PM
since when is a can non refillable?? last time i checked theres a large hole at the top, in which, a liquid could be poured in, hence...refillable. while it can't be resealed, neither can a glass bottle with a pry off cap.

so there, stupid canada...cans are refillable. I can't believe people accept this as a normal government system, make cans illegal to prevent littering....what do glass bottles disappear when it hits the ground? people should trash the fark out of that place as a form of protest

Nanuk-the White Bear 2008-03-15 12:45:46 PM
Methinks the "protect local bottling jobs", though mentioned last, is the real reason behind the ban on aluminum cans.

Sounds like the premier is allowing the bottlers just enough time to ramp up to can-based production before lifting the law.

/almost every taxi I've been in in PEI is a bootlegger for beer and liquor

mikec2003: last time i checked theres a large hole at the top, in which, a liquid could be poured in, hence...refillable. while it can't be resealed, neither can a glass bottle with a pry off cap.

Refillable in this case implies being resealable.

How did they get the first cap on the bottle? I bet they could do it again.

jimmychitwood: How about a deposit on the cans like many states in the USA do?

there are less than 150,000 people on the island.

Cans could be recycled, but it's a lot easier/cheaper to clean out and re-fill bottles for such a small population.

gregormendel 2008-03-15 12:53:08 PM
In a bizarre twist, PEI then declared war on the rest of the country for promoting non-refillable containers in its name, and demanded for it to change to "Bottleada."

Reminds me of Brookings, SD. Their town council was run by the owners of half the businesses in town, and their primary concern seemed to be making sure competition was nonexistent.

So they enacted "non-competition" laws that fixed the price on gasoline to whatever the councilman's station was selling it for that day (which was usually a dime higher than the next town over).

They refused to grant a permit to TGIFridays' because another councilman owned the Applebees.

It took them three years to let Lowe's build a store because some councilman didn't want competition with the Wal-Mart he had a huge stake in. They only allowed Lowe's permit because another councilman's K-Mart had not only gone out of business, but had sat vacant for two full winters and the building had suffered major water damage from burst pipes and roof leaks. Guess which building Lowe's was required to set up shop in (or tear down and rebuild, which would have been cheaper) if they wanted to come to Brookings.

yes if you have a new cap, if you take a bottle of coke, and use a bottle opener to open it, i bet you can't put that same bent cap back on.

I have made beer before, and the caps i had are new caps, not bent ones that have been pried off with a bottle opener.

I remember back in the....uh...late 80s...they had these can covers that had a smaller lid that would seal closed.

Think of a coffee cup lid, but you can put it on top of a soda/beer can. Closing the tab would stop contents from spilling out if knocked over. Didnt keep the beer any fresher, but you could id your own beer can easily.

They came in all those awesome 80s colors too.

This is Prince Edward Island, an extremely small province with probably the countries most serious recycling program due to the complete lack of landfill sites. As far back as I can remember, practically all flavored carbonated beverages sold there had to be in refillable bottles.

FYI, subby, saying "Canadian" here, while accurate, is like saying something that happened in Rhode Island applies to the whole of the US.

Actually, one of the few things at McDonald's that's actually worth eating. Quite tasty, and only offered while lobster is in season.

I live on PEI and I'm getting a big kick out of these replies.

/Really. Been living here for over 30 years.
//This no canned pop law disappears by May 1, 2008.
/// There are few businesses that have jumped the gun like this guy.
////The people that worked bottling pop will be offered jobs in recycling the cans
//More importantly, on May 1, the hell with pop..., we can get beer in cans.
