FTA: The Nautilus system was jointly developed at a cost of $300 million by the U.S. and Israeli militaries to shoot down medium-range Katyusha rockets launched over the Lebanese border by Hezbollah.

But it was deemed too expensive and too inaccurate, and both countries abandoned it in 2005.

Nautilus tests "shot down Katyushas, Qassams, and bombs with 100 percent success," countered Israeli lawyer Nitsana Darshan-Leitner in her lawsuit. "Israel could bring the system to Sderot and use it to protect the people there from Qassam rockets."

A placebo is better than nothing, I say.

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

What a crazy world we live in! Missile Defense Lasers? How about better diplomacy and tolerance for your neighbor's religious beliefs. (On both sides of course)

It's about time, not sure if it will work, but Sederot gets bombed on a daily basis.

I say give it to them, on the conditions that they
a: dispose of all the toxic by-products within their own borders
b: pay for transport and setup
c: don't start biatching even more when they find out that it doesn't work as well as they think it will.

How about.......NO...... lasers are way cooler than tolerance

Israel should just lock an load and just beat the crap out of the whole middle east, that way we get peace in the middle east without getting involved, fun times for all

actually, the airforce has mobile versions of these lasers that are quite acurate and capable of shooting down mortars. This combined with metal storm would probably cut 75% of missle related deaths.

/but unless its a magical wonder fix, they wont want it and no one will suggest it.

I wonder why Egypt had problems with Israel, and Syria had problems with Israel, and Lebanon has problems with Israel, and Iraq disliked Israel, and Jordan had problems with Israel, and Palestinians have problems with Israel. There must be some common thread linking all these issues in the Middle East, but I just can't put my finger on it. What could it be? Hmmm?

The similarities between this arc of discussion and the ones on Ares and Danger Room are frighteningly similar.

I never would have imagined there was any demographic overlap between this and the other two sites/blogs.

ColinT: MK 15 Phalanx

Except for the fact that the Phalanx has more friendly kills than enemy, I don't really know much about its effectiveness. I do know however, that the Army got rid of their automated multi-barrel platform, the Vulcan, because Bradly gunners had a higher kill rates manually tracking targets with their 25mm. It sure did look pretty at night though.

Lamune_Baba 2008-03-15 04:14:57 PM
I hope the actual working model is a bit better thought out than the artist's rendition of it. I'd imagine a country who has the money to fire missiles and drop bombs on someone has the resources to... I dunno... send a guy in with a rock to throw at the giant exposed mirror.

/or a rifle shot from the hill in the distance
//a guy with a rock taking out a $300-Mil defense system is funnier

Yes. Because we will totally have weeks to hyper-refined-pinpoint the (ballistic) courses of all (countermeasure-less) incoming missiles. After launching them ourselves.

A crippled spy satellite is not in any way a realistic test of actual anti-missile doctrine.

The Pentagon has been trying to build a death ray since the early 60s.

The laser is no big deal. The real problem is trying to build a device that can store the energy release it so quickly without blowing up.

The Star Wars idea in the 80s was to set off a nuclear explosion underground and funnel the energy into a laser - kind of the ultimate shaped charge.

They wasted billions on that.

Here's my bet: Gasoline engines will be replaced by battery engines before a death ray of any real size is developed.

Ah yes, because that's all they have, rocks.
Not rockets, not bombs, not asshats going into a boys school and randomly start shooting young boys, or randomly stab people in the old city.

That's what they do already. They kill each others children and fuel their hatred for each other. The holy land will be uninhabitable if they had their way. It's crazy.

Then again, you were probably joking.
