Look, unlike most folks here (and elsewhere) i've actually BEEN on intel gathering missions in the middle east. I understand the mindset of the Bad Guys, I know their technological capabilities and I know what their goals are and how they plan to achieve them. At no point in any of our plans to stop those guys is it necessary to gut our constitutional protections. There is ZERO reason for all these extensive wiretaps on private citizens in this country, no reason for the fear and suspicion, and no excuse for acting like all muslims are terrorists in training.

And yet....My father, God love him, is convinced that - despite all evidence to the contrary - that we have to have government monitoring of everyone 24/7 in order to 'be safe'. He's fine with shredding the 4th and 5th amendments too. I can't even explain to him why that would be a really really bad idea...he's convinced that as soon as a democrat gets into the white house that we'll see muslims everywhere blow up the ocean and destroy the country.

I fear for this country some days. I really do.

I don't know where that came from. I said it was stupid for the teacher to say what she said and it's stupid for the student to sue over it. I also said that America is neither as free nor as tolerant as it proclaims itself to be. Although we should be taking steps to make this a freer and more tolerant country, such as by wrestling control of the government away from the fearmongers and the bigots, if you're going to be living here you need to recognize it's not all sunshine and lollipops. Certainly the teacher should be punished, perhaps even fired, for her remark. However, getting lawsuit happy because someone hurt your feelings isn't all that smart.

Funny, most high school teachers and administrators fit the descriptions of whiny dumbasses that only work 9 months a year.

The word terrorist is so watered down these days it could mean an idiot a two-liter bottle and dry ice.

Why is this wrong? Everytime we go through TSA checkpoints at the airport, they treat us as if we all fit the profile of a terrorist.

This is pre 9/11, but at my high school graduation, our principal patted down my Palestinian friend Yousef before he walked on the stage to get his diploma. No one cared, because they were friends, and it was a friendly joke. And because where I live, no one farking cares if you're Arab/Persian/Muslim whatever, so no one even thought twice about it being racist.

Apparently though, this is different. This kid gets shiat from people in the school, and the teacher seemed to be saying it viciously. I say sue the shiat out of them.

It would have been funnier had he, after the teacher's comment, said, "Well, that's how it's going to be then?" and proceeded to take a pen out of his pocket and press the button on the top as if detonating something.

Of course, those who fit the stereotype of people who say others fit the stereotype of terrorists probably wouldn't find it very funny.

Clearly the administration should denounce and reject the teacher's statements.

Might not be there yet. And we probably will never get there. Don't think anyplace can. But we are way, WAY farther than the most of the rest of the world. Get on a plane and see some of the world or read about other places and you will see.

The funny thing is why the Iranian student cannot be tolerant of the teacher's statements. Tolerance is supposed to be a two way street not a one way dead end to any single ideology.

I don't see a problem with the lawsuit. Teachers are supposed to be committed to fostering a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment for their students, and this moronic teacher clearly violated that. If it had just been his fellow students mocking him, he wouldn't have much of a case, but since a teacher got involved that changes things.
