Great. Now every other terrorist will also want to file a "I'm offended" lawsuit.
We may not be able to deport him, but I'll bet we can deport his parents!

It was wrong of the teacher to say that.

If on the jury, presented with the evidence given, I'd find for the plaintiff. $1 for pain and suffering.

Student should have told the teacher she fit the stereotype of a child sex abuser.

American is not as free or as tolerant as it advertises itself to be to the tired, poor, huddled masses yearning to be free. It's just a part of what this country has always been. I'm not saying that we should just let this slide, the teacher should certainly be punished for being so tactless, but a lawsuit for hurt feelings is going too far.

Hey, at least we didn't round up all muslims and put them into internment camps like we did to the japanese.

True. But less intolerant does not mean tolerant. Means we're taking steps in the right direction (some bigger than others), not that we're there yet.

People are scared. I don't even know WHY they're scared.

Look, unlike most folks here (and elsewhere) i've actually BEEN on intel gathering missions in the middle east. I understand the mindset of the Bad Guys, I know their technological capabilities and I know what their goals are and how they plan to achieve them. At no point in any of our plans to stop those guys is it necessary to gut our constitutional protections. There is ZERO reason for all these extensive wiretaps on private citizens in this country, no reason for the fear and suspicion, and no excuse for acting like all muslims are terrorists in training.

And yet....My father, God love him, is convinced that - despite all evidence to the contrary - that we have to have government monitoring of everyone 24/7 in order to 'be safe'. He's fine with shredding the 4th and 5th amendments too. I can't even explain to him why that would be a really really bad idea...he's convinced that as soon as a democrat gets into the white house that we'll see muslims everywhere blow up the ocean and destroy the country.

I fear for this country some days. I really do.

I don't know where that came from. I said it was stupid for the teacher to say what she said and it's stupid for the student to sue over it. I also said that America is neither as free nor as tolerant as it proclaims itself to be. Although we should be taking steps to make this a freer and more tolerant country, such as by wrestling control of the government away from the fearmongers and the bigots, if you're going to be living here you need to recognize it's not all sunshine and lollipops. Certainly the teacher should be punished, perhaps even fired, for her remark. However, getting lawsuit happy because someone hurt your feelings isn't all that smart.

Funny, most high school teachers and administrators fit the descriptions of whiny dumbasses that only work 9 months a year.

Enemabag Jones 2008-03-15 02:49:14 PM
The word terrorist is so watered down these days it could mean an idiot a two-liter bottle and dry ice.

skinink 2008-03-15 02:49:17 PM
Why is this wrong? Everytime we go through TSA checkpoints at the airport, they treat us as if we all fit the profile of a terrorist.

organizm 2008-03-15 02:50:15 PM
This is pre 9/11, but at my high school graduation, our principal patted down my Palestinian friend Yousef before he walked on the stage to get his diploma. No one cared, because they were friends, and it was a friendly joke. And because where I live, no one farking cares if you're Arab/Persian/Muslim whatever, so no one even thought twice about it being racist.

Apparently though, this is different. This kid gets shiat from people in the school, and the teacher seemed to be saying it viciously. I say sue the shiat out of them.

It would have been funnier had he, after the teacher's comment, said, "Well, that's how it's going to be then?" and proceeded to take a pen out of his pocket and press the button on the top as if detonating something.

Of course, those who fit the stereotype of people who say others fit the stereotype of terrorists probably wouldn't find it very funny.

insomniac8400 2008-03-15 02:52:31 PM
Clearly the administration should denounce and reject the teacher's statements.

Might not be there yet. And we probably will never get there. Don't think anyplace can. But we are way, WAY farther than the most of the rest of the world. Get on a plane and see some of the world or read about other places and you will see.

The funny thing is why the Iranian student cannot be tolerant of the teacher's statements. Tolerance is supposed to be a two way street not a one way dead end to any single ideology.

This guy is lucky he lives in America.

Here if someone says he may be a terrorist, he gets to sue. (unless that someone is the decider)

If he lived in Iraq or Afghanistan and someone said he may be a terrorist, he would be shipped to Gitmo.

Maybe exile, but not deport.

If you hate foreigners in the US so much, at least get some familiarity with US immigration laws.

As a high school teacher (who crams 12 months of work into 9 months, btw cmb53208), I call shenanigans on the idea that the teacher gave another student a high-five after forcing "Amani" to put himself in a position to look like a "terrorist."

/it doesn't pass the smell test...

mikaloyd 2008-03-15 03:01:23 PM
"It got to the point where they were getting sick over it," Amani said. "My mom had trouble sleeping and eating. The believed America is a place where people from anywhere can come and be successful."

Some people are just too sensitive and caught up in daydreams to survive this world without lawsuits I suppose.

Would somebody please weep openly for me? Ive forgotten how to cry over BS lawsuits.

A few possibilities:

1. The kid is notoriously really annoying, acts paranoid and superior and voices lots of anti-American opinions loudly and often, and the teacher had had enough.

2. Perhaps the teacher was trying to help the student in a classroom full of morans by making some sort of point about the negative aspects of stereotyping, saying that the student 'fits the stereotype of a terrorist'-- i.e., some foolish people label any arab, non-westerner as a terrorist.

3. Maybe the teacher is simply a moran.

A.) It says the student got up and gave the teacher the high five, not that the teacher went over and gave a student high five.
B.) If you can honestly say "C'mon, no teacher would do that..." about ANYTHING, (and certainly something as mild as returning, or even giving, a high five) you haven't been on Fark long enough.

I mean what was it yesterday or the day before that we had a story about a teacher commenting on a 13 year old's "nice perky tits" in front of the class...

hmm...

FTFA: The teacher's remark came in the wake of an exchange in which she cajoled Amani into pulling down his hoodie and taking off his hat, which he said he wore because he was self-conscious about a new haircut.

cajoled... that's not biased reporting there.
If it was "Bob McWhitey" she would have said the same thing because in her eyes she was commenting on how the kid looked in a hat and hoodie in her class.

Just her shiat luck it happened to be the +50000 points in Scrabble kid she said it to.

FTFA: Amani, 17, burned for days about being made a laughingstock, he said, before finally telling his parents.

Is this news reporting or a personal interest story?

FTFA: ...Amani said. "My mom had trouble sleeping and eating. The [sic] believed America is a place where people from anywhere can come and be successful."

Give me a farking break. The teacher was saying he looked like the damn unibomber and he and his family went "ALLAH AKBAR she said it because I'm Brown! We'll sue!"

Someone needs to countersue these assholes to prove a point and stop them from happening.

Mr. Chainsaw 2008-03-15 03:28:24 PM
I don't see a problem with the lawsuit. Teachers are supposed to be committed to fostering a safe, healthy, and positive learning environment for their students, and this moronic teacher clearly violated that. If it had just been his fellow students mocking him, he wouldn't have much of a case, but since a teacher got involved that changes things.
