I agree whole heartedly, but my little heart did swell at seeing an explosion.

What an oddly literal and dull article that is. All it describes is the blowing up of the bomb. It says not one word about the actual bombing of Coventry, of which this bomb is presumably an artifact.

The bombing of Coventry is sometimes cited as a real-life example of one of the key premises of Cryptonomicon -- that sometimes you can't use the intelligence that you have because if you do you will tip off your enemy that you have cracked their codes.

I wonder if the reporter knows the history of their own city.

A bomb survey showed there was 0.89 100 per cent chance of finding a bomb on the site.

All fixed now.

durbnpoisn 2008-03-15 01:36:20 PM
The footage is not that good. Pretty disappointing, actually...

And, Subby, the Germans use the family name with Herr. So, "Herr Curtis" would have been more correct, if less funny. Of course, the Germans are known for their funny.

Methinks the "bomb survey" will be correct 0.89 percent the next time they find a bomb.

Coventry really got plastered in 1940. Enigma decrypts told us that the Germans were going to pulverise it that night. Churchill was told and asked if they should evacuate the city and put up extra air defonces. He said no. If we took special measures it would tip the nazis off that we could read their signal traffic so he sacrificed the city and many civilian lives. A terrible decision to have to make, but the right one.

/One good thing about Coventry - Lady Godiva rode through it nekkid.

Nakito What an oddly literal and dull article that is. I wonder if the reporter knows the history of their own city.

The reporter would have certainly known Coventry's history. Most people in the UK do, and anyone who has lived there would.

Not News: WWII bomb in Coventry.
News: WWII bomb in Coventry in 2008.

Lord Summerisle: Coventry really got plastered in 1940. Enigma decrypts told us that the Germans were going to pulverise it that night. If we took special measures it would tip the nazis off that we could read their signal traffic so he sacrificed the city and many civilian lives. A terrible decision to have to make, but the right one.

The decision may have been right, but Churchill didn't have to make it. The intelligence from the Enigma decrypts didn't identify Coventry. British intelligence thought the raid was going to be on London and the south east.

/One good thing about Coventry - Lady Godiva rode through it nekkid.

Yes. At least council tax bills came with a nekkid woman on a horse logo. Same for the wheelie-bins. Oh Coventry, how I miss your awful concrete city centre.

/Except for the Godiva on a horse statue.

A little bit on how those bombs got there in the first place..

Link (new window)

The city core was pretty much destroyed in the blitz. Rather then rebuild using the traditional British "high street" planning, they built one of the UK's first pedestrian shopping mall there.

And then there's the Coventry Cathedral. Rather than rebuild from the ruins, a brand-new cathedral was constructed on adjacent land, and the ruins kept as a reminder of the horrors of war.

That was actually quite lame!

The British criteria for "cool" must be quite a bit lower than in the US.

This must happen all the time being that 1000's of bombs were being sent over weekly during WWII.

Any pensioners out there? Wonder what they thing...
