I haven't been in a church other than funerals and weddings for 15 years, but even I could not display such arrogance about it in the few simple words that you did.

The new litmus test in Presidential Politics: You are personally responsbile for everyone you ever knew and everything they ever said. So when is McCain going to quit asking right wing christian nutters for endorsements and "spiritual advise"?

My pastor is into use of mildly offensive humor from the pulpit, and has gotten into refusing to use pronouns for God most of the time. That doesn't mean I do or approve of these things -- I just know that he's a good guy regardless.

Farwell and Robertson on 9/11:

Falwell said, "The ACLU has got to take a lot of blame for this. And I know I'll hear from them for this, but throwing God...successfully with the help of the federal court system...throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools, the abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked and when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad...I really believe that the pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who try to secularize America...I point the thing in their face and say you helped this happen."

Robertson said, "I totally concur, and the problem is we've adopted that agenda at the highest levels of our government, and so we're responsible as a free society for what the top people do, and the top people, of course, is the court system."
Falwell added, "Pat, did you notice yesterday that the ACLU and all the Christ-haters, the People for the American Way, NOW, etc., were totally disregarded by the Democrats and the Republicans in both houses of Congress, as they went out on the steps and and called out to God in prayer and sang 'God bless America' and said, let the ACLU be hanged. In other words, when the nation is on its knees, the only normal and natural and spiritual thing to do is what we ought to be doing all the time, calling on God."

If you are white and blame the US for 9/11. It is A-OK!!!!

I do...sort of. If you are going to ask Obama about Wright you have to ask McCain about Hagee. The difference is Obama said he doesn't agree with the radical parts of Wright's sermons. McCain, despite calling Hagee's type Agents of Intolerance 8 years ago (or something close) is now spooning him. It is only one step to Fred Phelps.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall Obama ever supporting Taylor. Pat Robertson does, and has referred to him as a "good christian". Although I suspect that support has more to do with gold and blood diamonds than anything else.

Before the Dawn: You panicked liberals are missing the central issue here. It isn't Pat Robertson or whoever. Throwing those names around isn't going to help you.

Remember Bush-senior's infamous phrase, 'Read my lips'? It was a lie and he was a one term president because of that lie. He will forever be remembered for 'Read my lips'.

The issue here is this: Obama says he has never heard these hateful comments from his self-described 'spiritual guide'. He claims to have never, ever heard them. He now says he would have quite the church if he knew.

If this is proven to be a lie, as it no doubt will be, he is done.

And how could you possibly prove it to be a lie. Don't see it happening.

Yeah, that's it. It was the lie that did it. Nothing to do with a crappy economy, Ross Perot, or a charismatic southern Democrat. It was all "read my lips".

Somacandra [TotalFark] 2008-03-15 01:10:13 AM
FTFA: Wright said his teaches are based on black liberation theology, which he summed up as "Africans speaking for themselves." Wake Forest University professor Terry Matthews, says in a lecture reprinted on the university's Web site that black liberation theology "seeks to find a way to make the gospel relevant to black people who must struggle daily under the burden of white oppression."

Yeah. The FOX religion reporters apparently have to go to a website to learn about black liberation theology? And they get paid for this?

www.powells.com

I know your readers don't read too many books, FOX, but that being the case, perhaps you could read the foundational work of black theology in the 20th century, and educate yourself on it for future reference?

That is a fair comment. He was the incumbent though...The lie or the tax increase, one or the other, probably had a little to do with it. Reagan raised taxes a lot more but he lowered it first so he could BS for a second term.

Think of it this way, over the past 20 years or so most of the major "spiritual advisors" that have been able to get on TV have turned out to be gay, pedophiles, adulterers, coke fiends, or a combination of several. Now I'm not going to say it wasn't obvious that Ted Haggard is gay, but how many of you knew he was snorting cocaine? Are you all to blame for it becuase you didn't know? I think not.

No, he was a one term President because of a failed economy.

Actually his statement says he didn't become aware of the controversial comments until the start of his Presidential campaign and he didn't think it appropriate to leave because Wright was retiring anyway. This really isn't that new of a story here, it's just being rehashed for media controversy.

Mcamp 2008-03-15 01:20:53 AM
If this is true, then Obama is too stupid to be POTUS. If it is not true then Obama is just another liar. No change in this candidate. Just the sane old same old.

Somacandra [TotalFark] 2008-03-15 01:21:04 AM
Anyone who thinks Reverend Wright's statements about America are controversial must admit their historical ignorance. Frederick Douglass, one of the most honored intellectual leaders in American history, said pretty much the same thing about America and especially July 4th. And as far as 9/11 and blowback goes, Benezir Bhutto said the same thing in the Washington Post op-ed pages before she died and no one jumped down her throat--in fact she was supported by the Bush Administration. Last time I checked, Senator Clinton didn't grow up with the existential double-consciousness of being both Black and American (new window) either, so maybe Rev. Wright has a point/.

In the end, I think its important to remember that Rev. Wright was a United States Marine before he became a Christian pastor and biblical scholar. As far as I am concerned, if you've put your ass on the line by serving, you can say any damn thing about America you want. You've earned it. Its sure as hell more than anyone at FOX has done.

Before the Dawn: Somacandra, how do you reconcile Obama's inspiration from the teachings of 'Black Liberation Theology' with his message of unity - in particular, his oft-repeated phrase, 'There isn't a white America, there isn't a black America'.

It's kind of a strange juxtaposition, isn't it?

Do you think that America will embrace 'Black Liberation Theology' and get on board?

How do you reconcile McCain teaching Apocalyptic Hageeesque theology and living past the next decade?

Do you believe everuthing you have ever heard? Do you subscribe to every belief of eveeryone you know? I think you should think about this harder. Just because he goes to a church where the reverned said something it doesn't necceasrily mean he believes and takes everything at face value. I'll reiterate it again you are a jackass and you are looking for a fight where there really isnt one.
