I think the dollar cloning is what got us into this mess in the first place.

Still pretty cool survival mechanism.

I think it began when the sand dollar was dropped from the goldfish standard.

Ravie: Repeat, even though it has a funnier headline.

It's not a repeat, it's just cloning itself to increase chances of a greenlight. Evolution in action.

Funnier headline? Just how lame was the original?

Does this make them all abominations in the eye of god, or did god put those critters there to tell humans cloning is ok?

/flame on

Anyone pick up on "Dawn Vaughn"?

Just how twisted were HER parents at the naming ceremony?

Does someone has issues with Ben's last name?.

I mean, I read Bernanke everytime as Bukkake.

Isn't this a total misuse of the word "clone"? It seems more like plain old asexual reproduction to me.

very funny headline

evodevo 2008-03-15 03:49:23 PM
The word clone has several meanings, and one of them is asexual reproduction. Via asexual reproduction the sand dollars are making genetic clones of themselves. Also, it's parsimonious to say "cloning" rather than "asexually reproducing" if you are having to say/write it a lot. Finally, "cloning" = coverage in the popular press, in a way that "asexually reproducing" probably does not.

/nice to see coverage of a cool science story!

No, and yes, in that order. Plain old asexual reproduction IS cloning, which is defined as the production of a genetically identical second individual, without altering the original individual (as opposed to splitting processes which creates two new individuals and destroy the original). If you're familiar with a stronger meaning of "cloning," that's just from science fiction and wonky science writing in the popular media.
