Unbelievable. Third world death trap trucks being driven by 3rd world foreigners on our highways. A facist 3rd world country at that. I wonder how many will be hauling refugees here to infiltrate us?

This is insane.

My uncle and 8 others were killled in a traffic accident by a Mexican FedEX driver. The only documentation FedEX had on him was a PO Box in Mexico and a name that may or may not have been real. The guy just disappeared after talking to the police that day.

FedEX quietly settled it out of court but I know the pay out was freaking huge.

When I see a beat up pickup doing 25 mph in a 45 mph zone, the driver is almost always Mexican. I wouldn't have believed it until I moved to Texas.

They're doing kph instead of mph ;)

The feds cracked down on the Fung Wah bus line because their drivers didn't speak English. When buses burst into flames, flipped over, or otherwise became hazardous drivers couldn't tell passengers what to do. That's why they need to be able to speak English. That, and saying "thank you Mr. Policeman can you please insert your nightstick deeper?" Talking to people is part of the job. For the traffic sign test I'm content to have them be able to understand the signs.

I read it. The issue is whether the driver understands road signs and instructions well enough to drive safely. There is no requirement that he be fluent in English. And more importantly, there's no indication that the Feds are ignoring their own rules (Teamster fever dreams notwithstanding). In fact, the Mexicans have been complaining that they're getting tickets for not be proficient in English even if they're only operating near the border (I know, cry me a river).

The other issue here is that a federal agency's regs can't be used to stop implementation of a ratified treaty.

Try to get this thru your politically correct skull - the traffic signs in this country are all in ENGLISH! If you can't read the damn traffic signs, how the hell can you drive safely!?

We have thread after thread after thread of wackos who tell us that road safety is paramount and that any excess inflicted on drivers is fine so long as it's in the name of 'road safety'. I expect every last one of you jackbooted thugs to be up in arms about this horrific breech of safety protocol and rightly fear mexican drivers on the roads. I know who you are and I'll be watching your comments on this thread....

I don't really know anything about this. My initial post was for those who didn't see any constitutional implications in this. But it seems to me that knowing a red, octogonal sign means "alto" does not certify that one can understand signs reading "accident ahead", "jakebrake not allowed", "slippery when wet", etc. And I'm not familiar with anything in NAFTA or any other treaty that would preclude the enforcement of the law as described in TFA.

So you're saying an immigrant truck driver cannot tell the difference between a big red sign with four letters that says 'ALTO' and 'STOP'?

Godscrack: So you're saying an immigrant truck driver cannot tell the difference between a big red sign with four letters that says 'ALTO' and 'STOP'?

How about these little gems:

ALL HAZARDOUS CARGO MUST EXIT

ALL TRUCKS MUST EXIT WHEN LIGHT IS FLASHING

BRIDGE OUT AHEAD

LOAD LIMIT 20,000 LBS

MAX HEIGHT 13'9"

NO TRUCKS

The list goes on ;)

I would say that's not a problem except that we have other signs beside "stop." "Bridge Out" or "detour" (with instructions) for instance.

Yes becuase the ONLY sign on our roads are bug red ones that say stop. How about the ones that flash warnings above the roadway, "CONSTRUCTION AHEAD*flash*Lanes merge in 3 miles*flash*SLOW DOWN*Expect Delays." OR "CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION*ACCIDENT AHEAD*SLOW DOWN*" Those types are pretty damn important and are just on big black rectangles with yellow lettering.

Godscrack: So you're saying an immigrant truck driver cannot tell the difference between a big red sign with four letters that says 'ALTO' and 'STOP'?

I'm saying that a mexican truck driver barrelling down the road at 80mph who's lost and trying to figure out where the hell he's going isn't going to have time to figure out which off ramp he's supposed to take and isn't going to have time to check his spanish/english dictionary while moving thru rush hour traffic.

So he's doding thru traffic, trying to understand the traffic signs, isn't sure what the speed limit is and has no idea if he's on a one way street or if he's gotta worry about lanes shifting or construcion up ahead. So he isn't in the correct lane when that construction crew suddenly shows up in his path(because he couldn't understand the sign that said 'road work in 2 miles), is going too fast to stop by the time he sees them, and causes a 40 car pileup because he suddenly shifted into traffic without warning.

It is inconcievable to me that we advocate red light cameras in the name of safety, but let drivers on the road who can't read the damn road signs!

I have a woman in my class insisting immigrants, even illegals, should get the right to vote. I shared my views on this and other immigration and voting issues and my professor asked "were you a repressive dictator in a past life?"

I'm still not sure how to take that.

Take a look at the .pdf, not the article:

all drivers operating
trucks in the United States to be able to read and speak the
English language sufficiently to:
Converse with the general public;
Understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language;
Respond to official inquiries; and
Make entries on reports and records.

Why should a non citizen be allowed to vote in our elections? They'd vote according to the US policies relating to their own country, in their own self interest, not the interest of America.

Hell no I don't think they should.

This is also an issue on construction sites. There are so many Mexican workers who can't read or speak English, it becomes a major safety hazard.

Employers should have English speaking requirements when communication is important to safety.

If you read the thread, you would have realized that this has already been covered. And driving around any area with any type of traffic or signs would let you know that not all signs are just "STOP".
