Every time I hear that song, it takes me back to the early 80s.

Goddammit the Talking Heads are rad.

And that roaring that you hear
Is only the blood that circles constantly
No it is not applause my dear
No, that was a long long time ago
That was a long long time ago

Farking awsome. Happy B-day! I remember that the posted video when it came out on MTV. I remember when MTV played videos- but that too was a long long time ago.

Pretty good but I actually prefer the live version from "Stop Making Sense" (new, non-RR window)

I prefer Stop Making Sense to everything ever.

Actually, Toni Basil choreogapphed a lot of videos because, you know, she's a choreographer. It's sort of her profession.

The Talking Heads are indeed rad, but lets recognize that its probably mostly David Byrne, it is his birthday afterall. His solo album Feelings is one of my favoritessssssss.

The first edit in the Stop Making Sense version of Once In A Lifetime is my favourite edit in any film.

It's kinda sad to have a favourite edit, right?

Sigh.

My favorite band of the 80's by far.

Stop Making Sense was probably the absolute best concert movie ever made.

I literally just finished listening to "77" for the first time in my life a few minutes ago, having never heard an entire Talking Heads album before and it blew my mind. I've always enjoyed their singles, but never took the time to check them out and I'm so sorry I waited so long. I'm definitely going to be hunting down the rest of their discography this weekend. What an amazing group.

I saw Byrne at Bonaroo back in 2004, after a so-so concert experience it was his performance that made the trip and expense worth it.
"This Must Be the Place (Naive Meldoy)" is my favorite song.

Also, Toni Basil was/is awesome.

I was in Home Depot a few weeks ago, and they had this horrid New Country pap blasting on their PA. Then 'Burning Down The House' came on and I was overcome with waves of joy. I would describe it as a healing experience.

I never really cared much for "77". I think "More songs...", "Fear of Music" [F***ing great title, btw], and "remain in light" are 10x better... i don't own anything by them after "remain" tho...
I listened to the "sand in the Vaseline" 2cd set, and the later [83-88] songs did not interest me nearly as much as the 78-81 songs on it [that cd set was my first experience of the Heads].

i think that byrne is one of the most interesting "different" singers and songwriters of the past 3 decades... up there with Eno and Cale, etc.

Happy birthday, funnyman! His journal at davidbyrne.com is quite good. Also, he needs to make another album and go on tour again.

You lucky bastard. I've been listening to 77 in its entirety on a regular basis since 1982, and let me tell you - it never gets old, never gets stale. And if 77 blew your mind, prepare yourself for Fear of Music.

Seeing that '77 cover damned near made me cry. Nothing in popular music had excited me like that since the Beatles; I'd wager nothing else will, unless I think it up myself ;)

I hate to do it, but THIS

Tina was teh hawt, too. In fact, last I saw her she still is. Saw them at the Philadelphia Zoo, in front of the giraffes, promoting '77. Pouring rain, her tee shirt soaked through, nice hard nips I couldn't take my eyes off of. I had the security guy giving me her half-Heinekens and opening new ones for her. Oh yeah, the music kicked ass too.

CORRECTION:

David Byrne was born MAY 14th - not March 14th.

Always happy to see a David Byrne or Talking Heads video, however.

I remember this as he and Brian Eno have birthdays right next to each other - Eno is May 15th I believe.

Today is Albert Einstein's birthday - got a video of him?

I think maybe his birthday is May 14. But who cares, Talking HEads are amazing.

Also, Tina Weymouth has seemingly always been a pain in the ass. She complained once that the band toured with another bass player because the guys were sexist. I'm sure it had nothing to do with her not being able to play her way out of a wet paper bag.

I am definately listening to Remain In Light when I get home. Glad this thread exists today!

It's not that she couldn't play, period. It's that once Byrne decided he was Mr. Worldbeat, he had to bring a zillion more people on stage to fill the holes for a band that was put together to play nervy new wave, not mbalax.

I think the Talking Heads are probably the only band no one actively hates. There are always haters in every music thread, but you never see them in Talking Heads threads and Weird Al threads.

I remember discovering them after they were mentioned in an interview by one of my favourite bands when I was 17. Brilliant discovery.

musicky 2008-03-16 04:01:36 AM
I highly recommend the 5.1 mix of Remain in Light. The Great Curve especially. It will fill your brain with popcorn.

Give it another twenty years. People will be hating on the Heads in the same half-assed, insincere way so many are hating on The Beatles nowadays. Remember kids, not EVERYTHING popular is bad. That's just what The Man wants you to think.

I prefer Look Into The Eyeball. I was seriously into metal when I bought that album on a whim, turned all of my friends on to it, then started exploring what music can do. It's pretty silly to say an album changed your life, but that album definitely did change my life.
