If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.

Giving them additional powers would seem to be redundant since they do whatever they damn well please anyway. This sort of stuff wont stop until people start going to jail for it.

Well, I can't argue with that.

Yeah, but you can't send anyone to jail when there's a guy in the White House that would have no problem issuing mass pardons.

I that something to address that would be a good amendment to the constitution. I don't think presidents should be able to pardon members of their executive branch. Later presidents should be allowed to pardon the staff of previous administrations but there is just too much room for abuse with the system we have now.

The Constitution is pre-9/11 thinking. You're either with us, or with The Terrorists. The Executive branch is above the law. It's for our own good. If you don't like it, you hate America, and want us to fail.

yeah... the only conservatives we have anymore are trolls or insane. It's sort of sad- like hearing about how the Dodo went extinct. Actually, that's a pretty good analogy.

ZaldaPhlemm: National Security Letters (NSLs) issued : 49,425

Poor reading comprehension skills.

There were 48 violations in Fine's initial audit. The article does not say when the initial audit was. There were 49,425 NSLs in 2006. A sampling (not an audit) shows violations in 9.43%.

That would suggest that the number of violations in 2006 was:

9.43% * 49,425 = 4,661 violations

Of course the exact number can not be determined without a full audit.

We have to get rid of them here so we don't lose them there.

No. It won't stop until people care enough to do something about the politicians who keep voting for this stuff. As long as we have the 'if you're not doing anything wrong' crowd making excuses then abuses will continue, which we may or may not ever find out about.

/The Constitution and the Bill of Rights were put in place not to protect us from foreign governments but from our own.

Don't need an amendment. Just get the Supreme Court to say that's what it means. They've gotten pretty good at interpreting it into whatever the hell they want it to say.

I think the founding fathers had this idea that we would have people with knowledge and integrity on the supreme court.

Now you can't get an appointment to the court unless the president knows and approves in advance of how you will decide things.

So we get nominations like Harriet Miers.

Then they have to hide their true beliefs from congress.
