Ask the billions of insects killed by insecticides to feed the vegetarinous appetite!

Hunt, or eat free range for true cruelty-less food

That's nice. Wake me up when your rabbit food is tastier than a hot dog or cheeseburger and I might listen.

Way to go modmins. This would have been an epic flame war thread, but it's on the music tab.

Over/under on comments after going green: five.

Cruelty? What do you think will happen to cows after they are no longer needed by the public? It's not like they have any sort of defenses.

IrateShadow [TotalFark] 2008-03-13 01:44:23 PM
Tell you what; Grab a few groundhogs and throw them through a wheat combine, and then kill a cow with a knocking gun. Come back and tell me which was less cruel.

He's right that's why countries such as India where the majority of the population is vegetarian there are no starving people.

/dumbass

but is there bacon?

NuttierThanEver - He's right that's why countries such as India where the majority of the population is vegetarian there are no starving people.

Former boss of mine went to India for a month. Said the markets there turned him into a vegetarian. Mostly due to sanitary reasons. Took him almost 10 years to eat meat again.

xip_80 2008-03-13 01:55:56 PM
How exactly does it take care of ecology and famine again?

If you want to talk about ecology, think of the millions of acres of wetlands drained to make room for farms. Think of the forests that have been chopped down and the increased erosion. And the dead-zone in the Gulf of Mexico? Oh ya, that is caused by runoff from farms in the Midwest.

And as for famine... since when are we able to control the weather? If there's a drought, crop yields take a huge dive.

Of course, I'm only being half-serious here... Growing meat also has negative impacts on the environment. But vegetarianism isn't some kind of God-send to save the environment.

"It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty."

Ya, keep dreaming... dumbass.

Not because I love animals, but because I hate plants.

One of the very few places I'll eat vegetarian food is at Indian restaurants. They actually make it palatable.
And yeah, Sir Paul is gonna have to buy some offset credits for all the smug he released with that comment.

Don't get me wrong, I love swine flesh as much as anybody, anywhere, but I understand the science behind one of his points to be valid. Namely, that it's far more efficient to raise crops for human consumption than to raise crops as animal feed, purely from the standpoint of number of people who can be fed per acre of crops. Indian, for example, probably could not feed itself at all if not for the fact that they're 85%++ vegetarians.

Um, no. I go to India very often and there are loads of starving people. It's certainly true to say that there would be many more of them if they weren't mostly vegetarians.

I saw a man eating celery, so i beat him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again, i'll bite him clean in two
I'm a political prisoner, trapped in a windowless cage
'cause i stopped the slaughter of turnips, by killing five men in a rage
I told the judge when he sentenced me, this is my finest hour..
I'd kill those farmers again, just to save one more cauliflower

Huh, yeah I guess. I just got back from India and I'm seriously jet lagged. Plus, they don't do sarcasm in India so I guess my snark gland is atrophied.

At least cows can scream.

I remember reading a SciFi short story like that, maybe by Ray Bradbury.

Someone invented a radio that channels the frequency that plants scream.

Fewer than it took to take out the original Paul.

Relationships with food animal species are more complex than his own personal experience, but violence always goes along with meat eating even if you mean road kills that are already down.

Essentially, what he is saying closely corresponds to the basic principles of Jainism which is a compelling anamist philosophy embraced by tens of thousands.

Ahimsa (nonviolence)
Sanyama, (Simplicity and living within the limits)
Tapas (The Spiritual Practice of Purification, Austerity, Sacrifice and Fasting)

To me "tapas" means just about the opposite. Many plates with small servings, right? But I can still appreciate the ideas. Simply turning down the meat just a little would be a radical change for the better with most American diets, assuming longer and higher quality of life is desirable.

That doesn't quite make him a vegetarian for ethical reasons.

Just like if you've got a sucky personality and look like you've been beaten with an ugly stick, your lack of sex doesn't mean you've taken a vow of chastity.

flucto: Namely, that it's far more efficient to raise crops for human consumption than to raise crops as animal feed, purely from the standpoint of number of people who can be fed per acre of crops

not exactly true.

as far as turning anything into protein (whether it's nutrients in the soil, the sun, or an animal synthesizing protein from corn, etc) tilapia, chicken, and catfish are far more efficient than soy. soy is one of the worst crops as far as protein production, soil erosion, and susceptibility to pests.

your argument works best for beef and pork where the ratio of land per pound of protein is very high. it's even worse when you make beef eat corn.

my point is that we need a rational approach to food. stop thinking of food as poison. start eating local. start eating whole foods. and eat a balanced diet that includes small amounts of red meat, moderate amounts of poultry and fish, and large amounts of fresh fruit, fresh vegetables and whole grains.

also, support your local sustainable agriculture.

it's really rather simple.

timmy_the_tooth [TotalFark] 2008-03-13 05:48:43 PM
433: Hitler was prescribed a vegetarian diet.

Geobles popularized the idea that Hitler ate vegetarian because he didn't want the German people to think that while they were starving their furher was eating like a king (which he did when he entertained). Hitler was NOT a vegetarian. His favorite dish was pigeon.

The Hitler/Vegetarian connection is often brought up by people who want to Godwin vegetarianism.
