The majority of their investments and tourism is from neighboring Arabs that have few regional alternatives for business and pleasure. It's still oil wealth that's keeping Dubai afloat. When the oil dries up Dubai better hope there is demand for frankincense and myrrh or whatever the fark Gulf Arabs contributed to the global economy before oil.

You said their economy has very little to do with oil. I pointed out it was built on it. While today it only depends about 10% the majority of their economy is from financial sector which has large dealings with Iran (who gets their money from oil). But keep reading wikipedia. It is nice to know i am right in failing my students who try to cite it in class.

Did I say it never depended on oil? Couldn't you assume I was talking about currently and not 10-20-30-40 years ago? I didn't say their economy was not originally built up by oil. What I was pointing out if you bothered to read what I was responding to was that Dubai is actually doing something so that when the oil runs dry they are not going to suffer (well any more than the whole world). They have a lot of their GDP coming from other areas.

So, yes, you are right. Their economy was originally built with a backbone of oil. However, you were wrong in saying I was wrong because I was also right.

I only used the WIKI reference because I went and looked to see if I could find a more recent figure than the one quoted (10%) in your linked to article that used a figure from 8 years ago. I figured 6% didn't sound that unrealistic being that it has been another decade practically since 2000, but I sure as hell didn't state it as dead on fact being that I said it was from Wiki.
