Wanna do "something fast and super real"?
OK
Retire.

I actually like the new single.

I still love Monster to death (I wasn't old enough for their IRS days)

I've got my songs, I've got my free album.

What happened to retiring at the year 2000?

Still waiting.

I never understood REM. I found Monster and Out Of Time at Goodwill and thought, "Hey, their hits are pretty good, maybe I'll give it a listen." I don't think I've ever heard a band I felt more "meh" about. It's competent, sure, but just comes off as really unremarkable and bland. If someone wants to point out what I'm missing that makes them so great, I'd appreciate it.

Context is what you are missing. When R.E.M. was in their heyday they were very different and refreshing compared to pop at the time. Some of it sounds "meh" because their originality has influenced countless bands, to the point of where "I've heard this before" sets in when at the time people hadn't.

The rest of it sounds "meh" because it is just "meh". Monster for example was a later album where they didn't try to do anything but rock out and have fun like an indie college band, well after they had gotten big and famous and somewhat old. Their entire catalog defines hit-or-miss, but that made them endearing way back when.

REM is doing something "super fast and super real"? Like a selection of grindcore cover tunes?
I'll stand in the place that I am for that!

Saw them at Langerado, they played several new songs and I can honestly say this is the first REM album I've looked forward to since Green. Short, rockin' songs, under 3 minutes long, most excellent. "Horse To Water" was my fav.

The IRS years were special, I loved all of it. The big label years have been very scattered, I think because they don't live near each other any more and don't have that tight day-in-day-out band unity they had when scrumming around Athens. Once a band has money and one of them buys a house in another state, things forever change.

Always been a fan of Murmur, Reckoning and Fables of the Reconstruction.

Yep.

So, where's the link to download the album? Or should I still wait?
REM's website + Firefox = FAIL

You need to go back to Murmur, Reckoning or Document... Out of Time has to be their worst album, IMHO...

I've got em all. Been a long time fan. STILL, nothing moves me more than "New Adventures in Hi-Fi". Pure, unadulterated beauty.

And the author farked up. The real die-hards WILL wait for the release date because we DO support the band.

Wanna do "something fast and super real"?

Go back to your IRS sound.

If not that, your Green and Automatic records. Call Bill Berry.

Just making up for the fact that Radiohead basically started off by emulating R.E.M...
