My first Green was a Jaco link. (intro/The Chicken)

I am currently in Amsterdam a few feet away from a store selling a 64 Fender Jazz Bass. (26500 Euro) Cheap at half the price.

Anyone recall the day the Jaco bass was for sale on ebay?

We shut that down!

toutons 2008-03-12 08:34:17 PM
Someone found Jaco's bass? How about Jamersons?

toutons: Someone found Jaco's bass? How about Jamersons?
A Fender Jazz was for sale on Ebay about 6 or 7 years ago. The Bass had the wood fingerprint verifying Jaco's lost instrument.

All hell broke loose when that axe came up for sale.

We all assumed it was a counterfit.

I don't know what it is but everything I've heard from Jaco just seems corny somehow, it just doesn't click with me. I can also see how he would have influenced a lot of people however, he certainly does his own thing.

I just like a little more melody with my bass so I tend to favor people like Michael Manring. I found this clip. Nice melody & some excellent harmonics:

Is everyone forgetting his album Live in Italy? Best Jaco Album out there, better than his stuff with weather report (and that stuff is great).

Seriously, check out Live in Italy...if you dare!

That is great news if true. No kidding, Earlier this week I was wondering if and how it might ever be found. Well, I guess I can stop wondering.

I was introduced Jaco during highschool in the early nineties. I have since been a prettty heavy fan. I can also imagine someone feeling that some of the stuff is a bit corny. That said, Jaco was an innovator and immensly gifted. His work suffered, no doubt, as his ilness dictated. I prefer to remember the best and keep things in context.

At his strongest, there was so much passion, talent, and focus. He made great contributions to his field. This is what I admire. This and his fantastic works; not all are masterpieces, but that is a human element. He raised the bar in so many catagories that his genius can not be denied.

I hope this news brings his family and fans a sense of happiness.

I say he sucks. 20 minute jazz tangents are not okay. Geezer and JPJ would look on and laugh at such a puss...Cliff is spinning in his bass god grave even as we speak. Entwistle just did another line and shook his head in shame at being labeled a bass player alon with this idiot. Steve Harris would sic Eddie on such a lame display of"bass prowess". What a farkin joke.

As a radio DJ on and off for almost 20 years and a self styled "expert" on rock music....I only heard of this idiot today...If you are not on my 15,000 song strong song list you do not exist. I expect some of the lamer farkers to flame me...but when is all said and done...who the hell is this guy? I mean really...how cool can he be when a guy who has seen 500 plus acts and god knows how many wannabes has never heard of you? Get real. Jazz=suckage This guy=black hole suckage...Up the Irons...Geezer is God... and Fark the rest of you.

Geddy is still alive, relevant, influential, successful, and fairly well known.

I don't expect your "15,000 strong song list" to include anything by Buckethead or King Crimson and therefore you do not exist. I'll bet you've got some Britney Spears, tho'. Or maybe Eddie Murphy's "Party All the Time"?

"As a radio DJ on and off for almost 20 years and a self styled "expert" on rock music."

So you're a DJ, and an "expert" who has never heard of Jaco Pastorius?

My bullshiat detector just asploded.

GibbyTheMole I agree.
CoachBlack You're an excellent troll-type. Jaco was great at what he did, if you dont like what he did, f##k off. Its an art not a sport.

Thanx bingo the psych-o I had never heard Michael Manring........................thoroughly blown way.

Obviously there is no stylistic differences between rock and jazz bass. If you like jazz bass you must suck. There is no way anyone could like jazz bass, because coachblank, a self proclaimed expert doesn't like it. Make sure you reread that, SELF PROCLAIMED. He doesn't need no instructions to know how to rock, nor any type of musical experience or formal training. Are any of you self proclaimed experts, I don't think so. He has been a DJ on and off for a long time. So obviously when he isn't working as a DJ (possibly because the station he was working at didn't rock enough) he is developing his keen musical senses by listening to the same 15000 songs over and over. That's the same music to study over and over, no need to expand and discover new music. I for one am grateful to have such a musical lothario in our community.

/seriously throw away your Buckethead album/mp3 we don't need your type in Buckethead land

I will be flamed for this. But until I saw this I had now idea who this dude was.

Will be checking more of him now.

Great stuff.

New Age Redneck 2008-03-13 12:14:16 PM
As a long time bass player, I would recommend checking out as many players as possible in all genres of music. Some guys like Charlie Hayden, Anthony Jackson, Mike Watt, Rocco Prestia, Ray Brown, John Paul Jones,Duck Dunn and the cat playing on this songLink

"All flash and no smash makes for a poor bass player" to paraphrase Flea, who is a decent player too.
/ Rather hear about players that you think kill it not this so and so sucks stuff

So you are basing your expertise on a grand total of 15,000 songs? No wonder radio farking sucks.

The first 30 seconds or so sounds like one of those "shreds" videos.

CoachBlack 2008-03-13 10:05:40 PM
1. I do not listen the same 15,000 songs over and over. There are 15,643 songs on my laptop. There are also 4,000 cd's all over my house, and 1502 vinyl albums in a climate controlled storage. And XM in the car for good measure.
2. Yes Hawkwind, Thin Lizzy, etc. And yes I realize good music has been made since 1979. Hell in '79 I was farking 8 years old. Today's personal play list had a theme....70's metal. Tomorrow's playlist will contain something modern, I promise.
3. I said I thought this Jacoff dude sucked. My opinion. It is also my opinion that if it sounds good to your ears, then listen to it. It sounded like crap to mine, so I will not be listening to it. I think it sucks, but I would never discourage anyone from listening to anything, I would encourage them to listen to something I like instead.
4. Recommended listening for tomorrow....Hurt, Bloodsimple, Iron Maiden, David Allan Coe, Hellyeah, and just for the fun of some Weird Al.

CoachBlack 2008-03-13 10:08:09 PM
Oh, and maybe some Monster Magnet, Throttlerod, and High On Fire.
