That being said, he's right about both.

Also, The Hold Steady are pretty good.

1. Motley Crue has never been good.
2. 5 years from now people will still know who Motley Crue & The Red Hot Chili Peppers are.

The Crue were NEVER about being good.

Rock stars aren't supposed to age gracefully, they're supposed to do enough drugs to kill a Clydesdale and then OD before they get all "get off my lawn".

I think they're supposed to make good music too, but seeing as we consider Anthony Kiedis and Nikki Sixx to be rock stars, it's obviously not a requirement.

subby, get out more and stop listening to f'n ClearChannel stations, will ya?

The hold Steady is a great band and Boys and Girls in America rocks your socks off.

/and he was correct on his assessment to boot

I don't like the Hold Steady very much, but I have heard their stuff.

There are plenty of bands that sold tons of records that don't really hold up to much scrutiny. Some were one hit wonders, others had stronger careers. Big deal. I wish Metallica, R.E.M. and a host of other bands broke up right before they started their slow decline, but that's entirely subjective. How is that latest Beach Boys album?

carmody 2008-03-12 05:04:27 PM
I'd rather listen to his band than either the Crue or the Peppers.

So I heard that The Hold Steady were such a hot commodity and went out and acquired Boys and Girls in America. All I heard was a bar band, the likes of which I've come across a hundred times. What's the big deal with them?

of course *ptoo* in my day aging gracefully for a rocker meant choking on one's own vomit, not this pussy crap.

I'd say if you cover a Stevie Wonder song and make it metal-y you could say you have some funk-metal cred.

However, Hold Steady rock and Finn was entirely correct in his observations. When a band known for playing with socks on their weeners is widely accepted by parents and their kids alike, its a sign you've gone bland.

Mr. Coffee Nerves [TotalFark] 2008-03-12 05:22:12 PM
Reminds me of the passage in "Hammer of the Gods" where Billy Idol is hurling taunts of obsolescence at the members of Zeppelin.

Except Idol went on to be a multi-platinum artist.

well both bands have been around for 20 years or so. who in their right mind wants to be doing the same thing they were doing 20 years ago? oh no they dont have the socks on their cocks anymore, theyre bland! or they could have changed direction with their lives slightly....
and isnt aging gracefully for a rock band just being alive when you hit your 40s?

step 1: acquire account, make up assumed name
step 2: wait for appropriate article
step 3: post comment stating "opinions are meaningless unless you've sold 20 million albums and i know what your name is, and that's my opinion"
step 4: revel in how impressed-to-pieces everyone is, behold how many lives you've changed with your cogent argument, profit

Has NO one listened to their first album? For god's sake every track on in ROCKS harder ballz than any bland emo-boy-band can hope to have.

Gee, they're so edgy. They did a version of Take Me Out to the Ballgame for Minnesota Twins games.

reaching #31 in the Pazz & Jop critics poll that year

Stop. Now I know what they sound like. Pass.

1. Yep subby, I have never heard of this guy.

2. From seeing 3 dates on Motley Crue's Carnival of Sins Tour, I know this guy has no idea what he is taliking about.

3. He's a B-list musician who is trying to make his mark on the business by insulting established superstars because his music fails at doing so.

4. Hopefully he will get blacklisted like Kevin Dubrow was when he pulled this shiat and hopefully he will learn from it like Kevin Dubrow did before he died.

Swankywanky's pretty much right on. There are bands out there beyond whatever your local Top 40 or alt-rock station plays.

/first dl'd The Hold Steady about 2 1/2 years ago.

heavymetal: 4. Hopefully he will get blacklisted like Kevin Dubrow was when he pulled this shiat and hopefully he will learn from it like Kevin Dubrow did before he died.

right, because blacklisting a young artist questioning the establishment that he feels is stodgy and out of touch is in the spirit of rock and roll, and wouldn't prove his point at all.

Man, fark The Hold Steady. Overrated, cheezy-assed bad Elvis Costello knockoff crap. Ever see them perform live? With all the high school drama class-level emoting and hipster clothing, it's like a third rate traveling production of Rent.

madden101: Swankywanky's pretty much right on. There are bands out there beyond whatever your local Top 40 or alt-rock station plays.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. Everyone on here listens to more than just radio crap- you aren't unique or special.

Hold Steady fans only listen to them because they think they're "edgy" or "cool." Nobody actually really enjoys their music- they just want to be able to show off to everyone what a hipster they are because "they heard of them first."

/Heard them 5 years ago- does this make me twice the hipster?

Say what you want about the Chili Peppers, there's no debating taste. But Flea and Frusciante are masters of the bass and guitar.

NorCalLos 2008-03-12 07:32:28 PM
I've never heard or heard of this band that I know of, though I can't be sure because there are so many farkin bands with "steady" in the name that I can't keep them straight. I will not listen to this band now because I refuse to reward the guy's feeble attempt at playing David and Goliath.

Someone please explain exactly what "growing old gracefully" means for a rock band. Does that mean to not evolve? Or to retire? RHCP's Californication album was pretty damned good IMHO, as was By The Way, BTW. Picking on Motley Crue is just sad. This dude might as well get on his soap box and start dissing Hanna Montana or some shiat. Even if the dude is right about RHCP and Crue, that doesn't make his band any good.

NorCalLos 2008-03-12 07:37:13 PM

Pretending that your social value is somehow tied to what music you like/dislike is analagous to thinking your value in life is determined by how much money you have or how good looking you are. The word "hipster," to me is a word used to insult people that are naive, shallow, and desperate enough to believe the hype about music/art/whatever making you someone you are not.

In the words of Adam Carola:

"Stop trying to convince everyone how creative you are and go create something."

Enough said.

NorCalLos 2008-03-12 07:42:24 PM

Especially on The Mars Volta albums, which incidentally are about 500 times more relevant than The Hold Steady.

tinfins: Say what you want about the Chili Peppers, there's no debating taste. But Flea and Frusciante are masters of the bass and guitar.

Agreed. The only problem is they've been playing the same bloody song for 15 years.

Mappy 2008-03-12 08:04:48 PM
John seems like the only one in the Chili Peppers who is still improving his playing at this point. His recent solo stuff is worth checking out, but his work with the Chili Peppers seems uninspired at best. Flea, while still in the upper tier of active bass players, seems content to rest on his laurels and isn't the virtuoso he used to be. But none of that matters since the Chili Peppers haven't collectively written a song worth a damn since the mid 90s.

Ummmm... they are one of the more diverse bands out there with funk, punk, rock n roll, jazz, acoustic ballads, ect... I actually think thats why so many people "hate" them because they like bands that play the same sound over and over

bethica 2008-03-12 08:12:06 PM
You gotta at least give the guy credit for going after someone different. Every time I hear about an artist talking about an embarrassment to the music industry I think, "Nickelback?"

Used to be. They became homogenized after Bloddsugarsexmagik.

castufari 2008-03-12 08:40:17 PM
I know a singer/songwriter who disses on most popular artists. "They've sold out their craft". Yeah, because they made it and made some cash and you're sitting on a street corner in some hick mountain town playing for tips?

tinfins 2008-03-12 08:49:27 PM
This stuff about them being homogenized and playing the same song over and over is foolish. They've done nothing but get better. Their sound has mellowed, but that's hardly equivalent to what you all are saying.
