Hell yes, I will definitely buy those. I've always considered vinyl far superior in quality than any other media, especially CD! If you have a good quality sound system, vinyl is unmistakably superior.

To those who think of vinyl as "pop N' scratch" media, you're a fail. New vinyl doesn't pop, you have to take care of it by cleaning it and not using cheap needles or turntables to play it.

Kudos to whoever thought of this.

Oh, and most of all, thanks to subby for the heads up.

Except that vinyl can still be pirated in a digital format...

It will be the first time they've released anything decent in over a decade.

This reminds me of that time when I recorded all of my vinyl onto my computer and turned them into MP3s.

I wouldn't buy something Metallica put out even if it was some of their good old material in vinyl. fark you Lars. You get 0% of my money, which is exactly the amount you deserve.

FTA:

While we're finishing up the new album, we told the dudes at the record company we thought it might be cool to dust off the old tapes and get all retro with some vinyl re-releases

Translation:

WE NEED CASH!!

I'm not sure if it counts, but I really liked the documentary "Some Kind of Monster." It turns these metal stars into snively whiners.

Vinyl has a good following again. Probably not a bad idea. I already have everything from Metallica I want though. (Black Album & back) I haven't even bothered to buy the orig Star Wars trilogy on DVD since I already have it on LD. Sure as hell not gonna buy Metallica on vinyl.

Daemon Spooler [TotalFark] 2008-03-10 11:42:26 AM
I'm a foil pirate so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

Whatthefark 2008-03-10 11:43:06 AM
This sounds like a George Lucas 'change Star Wars, re-release it, then change it back again and release that one too DVD set' cash grab.

If they printed picture discs, I'd buy. Otherwise, fark off Metallica.

Caeldan 2008-03-10 11:43:47 AM
Aren't masters stored digitally for the most part now though?

So what's the point of releasing in vinyl, other than to take cash from the poor saps that think they're getting better quality sound because it's 'analog', even though the source for the vinyl was digital.

carmody 2008-03-10 11:45:10 AM
Caeldan, that's beside the point. The mechanical reproduction of vinyl is where it shines, regardless of whether the material was originally recorded in a digital or analog format.

I liked it, too. It's the absolute best way to see how they've completely lost any sense of who they were when they released their best work so long ago.

When you're toasting champagne as your expensive works of art are sold for millions at auction, and then follow that with a studio session where you're studying your own work on giant plasma screens, I'd say you're anything but "metal".

/really miss the old Metallica
//James and Lars are total d-bags

Yeah but unless they released a picture disc where it was coloured vinyl, a picture disc is useless. They will paint or overlay an image onto the vinyl, which actually makes it harder on the needle, or the sound quality usually isn't as good.

Pciture discs are good for collecting and framing...

I must say though, I love my vinyl records I've only got about 40-50 but they're just superb.

The first new one I bought was Dark Side of the Moon 30th anniv. And I've been lucky enough to get new albums from some artists over the years, but even buying the old audiophile quality records on the thicker virgin vinyl (which most new records are made on) makes the 30 year old ones really stand the test of time.

In the case of Metallica, their early stuff (Justice, etc...) are all on 2.5 inch analog reel. Their stuff lends itself to the dynamic warmth of analog anyhow....

One side to the audio out from the phonograph, one to the audio in of your computer.

/mine also works with 8 track players (may require size adapter) cassette decks, laser disks, DVDs, audio DVDs, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray. What other formats does yours accept?

so FTA (if I'm reading correctly) I can only get the 180-gram versions if I buy the whole jumbo gift set?

that's a bummer, just want some solid (180gram+) vinyl with the original music from the masters

Not even vinyl can make the shiatty sound engineering on "And Justice For All" sound good.

How about adding some bass to "Justice" this time around?

Vinyl transfer king here...

Guys, I STRONGLY encourage you folks to get some sort of decent preamp and soundcard (not bult-in audio) before you start transferring this shizzle. Not to mention a decent direct-drive turntable and cartridge/stylus. No need to get too audiophile-snobby, but a few necessary components can go a LONG way to making your transfers sound better than some rando bittorent trash.

That's the only thing I'd want out of this...remix/mastering Justice so you can actually hear the bass and turning down Lars' drums.

Cassette decks, 8-tracks, etc., no problem, but a turntable, you'll need some sort of pre-amp.

Please, for the love of God, you people willing to buy this crap need to shut up about it. It is NOT a superior format. It's an antiquated, out of date, and obsolete format that is a complete waste this day in age.

If you want to waste your money on it because it makes you feel retro or somehow cooler than everyone else, fine, but PLEASE stop telling me how I am some sort of philistine for not appreciating the "sccccrrrrrrttttccchhhh" that you like to call "depth" of your chunk of vinyl that would better be used as house siding.

Vinyl records have a nice, warm sound. They also look cool. Go fark a tailpipe or something.

Can you somehow quantify what this "warm" sound is? Because so far as I can tell, it's the scratches, pops, and other things that fill in the deadspace where you'd ordinarily have silence.

My dad is a huge audiophile, and told me for years how much better his vinyl sounded than "...so called new media." I finally got sick of it, downloaded copies of his favorite old vinyl records, and put them both on his big expensive system to see if he could tell the difference.

He was only right once out of the nine instances I put up, because his record was old enough to have extra "scccrreettttch" and it tipped him off to the source.

He finally doesn't bug me about it.

If only I could get the rest of you to please cut it out. As someone said in a previous vinyl thread, I've been hearing about the comeback of vinyl every year since 1989. It's primarily a collectors item for the smug these days, nothing more.

At least it comes with decent artwork every once in a while, though.

I've never seen any "cassette decks, laser disks, DVDs, audio DVDs, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray" with a 3.5mm headphone jack as a line output. Certainly not a turntable with any line out, ever. Try again. This time, try thinking.

I threw out my old record player I'd had since 1993 or so, and it had a 3.5mm output for headphones - they pretty much all do.

If only they made some sort of converter cable(pops) to handle that.
