Only if you read it in the original English like Jesus talked. Some of those translations are a hard slog.

Actually, the translation history is bloody fascinating. The whole thing is bloody fascinating. Take the Song of Songs, the most widely read erotic poem in the Western Canon, for example.

Hey, Keefe, why don't you write a song about it?

Then sing it, right in the middle of a Rolling Stones concert!

That would go over well.

I'm about as religious as a stump and haven't seen the inside of a church in 25 years, but I can argue that the KJV is the most influential book in history, if just for its effects on the language. Nothing else even comes close in any culture - the Koran doesn't count, because unless you speak Arabic, you haven't read it. I'd argue that you'd have a hard time understanding English idiom until you're familiar with it. Shakespeare may be a close second, but he'd read the Bible when he picked up his pen.

Srsly, I read the goddam thing all the time, in all its myriad translations.

And I work for the talibangelicals. For real.

And I also believe in religious freedom, and I think that the politico-religionists are trying to fark that up--this bill being a classic example.

Bible verses are so completely ingrained in the English language that it would be hard to understand them without at least a passing understanding of their Biblical origins. Where is The Valley Of Death, and why is that Yea guy there? Is it in Oregon? I don't have the time or energy to produce a comprehensive list, but the KJV is the best example of group writing since, well, maybe Fark.

Stick with it Keith - it picks up a bit around Judges.

What he said. Not that you can't speak the language without it, but reading Shakespeare and the King James Bible will enhance your understanding of it.

That's true, perhaps even more so than the book (books?) itself.

Like many atheists, I probably refer to KJV more than most Christians. I too am fascinated why people base their whole lives on this fantasy of a jewish zombie man-god sky wizard thing.

I tried reading it, and gave up at "Numbers". It's literally numbers, more numbers, and more bloody numbers.

I'd post the comic, but my Google-Fu is weak today.

He's going to be really upset when he learns that the Book of Keith was edited out before the first King James printing. He put a lot of work into that.

Actually, I'd like it he sang it in the middle of a Stones show.

It'd give me a chance to go get a couple more beers without missing anything good.

Martin Luther's Bible translation may have been even more influential. He traveled around for it, watching people's mouths as they spoke, and thus helped to create modern German.
