I went from Beijing to Lhasa on the regular trains + 4 wheel drives.

Totally worth it.

This is needed on this particular route, because the Buddhist monks always travel first class.

They called it the Spruce Caboose. Some said it was too large to stay on the tracks. They were right.

So a "socialist/communist" government which has millions upon millions of impoverished rural citizens is building the world's most luxurious train ride out to the hinterlands?

Makes sense.

The Chinese have definately proven one thing: There is nothing, NOTHING you can't do with a Communist government, a Capitalist attitude, and a bottomless supply of slave labor.

Go China! Ban films with sex in them, kill all the cats, menace people who mention Tibet, make cheesy pronouncements that sound like bad lines from a "1984" ripoff.

What the hell are they doing with the "world's most luxurious train" when they're still oppressing their people with the Communist regime schtick? They're still sending people to re-education camps to make them good little comrades.

Those "communists" will always find ways to hash on the masses.

After hearing about those standing-room-only, where everybody wears depends because there's no toilet for that many people, I was figuring this story was going to be China's concept of "world's most luxurious train" would involve a seat, with padding even, and a crapper.

No, those will be the upholstery. Passengers will marvel at the intricate tabby patterns not realizing they're sitting on some poor Bejing kid's Mr. Snookums.

And here we were biatching about the Alaskan "bridge to nowhere".

FTFA: will be about 20 times more expensive than the ordinary fare of about 2000 yuan or $US280 ($300), Xinhua news agency said.

$5600? Christ, wasn't a ticket on the Concorde cheaper than that? That's a ship cruise on something with FAR more amenities than a train. But hey, they have this new found thing they called "capitalism". Or maybe they're still industrialists and the whole free market idea is still in gestation.

Did you hear the one about the monk who walks into a pizzeria, and says

"Make me one with everything"

Baboum!

The pizzaman gives him his pie, takes his money.

After a pause monk asks for his change back

Pizzaman says :
"The change must come from within"

Double-baboum!

For a good movie set on a train from Tibet into China, I recommend A World Without Thieves. It is one of the best flicks I've seen in ages.

olddinosaur 2008-03-09 07:29:08 PM
As far as I am concerned, anyone stupid enough to sit on a train for 5 days and eat dead cats when you could get there on a plane in 6 hours and have a much better meal, is probably too stupid to have $5600 to begin with.

BTW, 1200 miles in 5 days averages out to 20 mph.

I can do it faster on a bicycle.

TheHumanCannonball 2008-03-09 07:32:02 PM
But how quickly will the Chinese economy sink once the Olympic games have come and gone? So what will be the purpose of this train in a few years other than a good way to waste money in style?

well think up a marketing idea that would bring tourists from all over the world to see them euthanise cats and tell the chinese government about it and they might consider changing their policy.

40,000 yuan for a ride. That doesn't sound much like a People's Price TM.

Welcome to the failroad.

olddinosaur 2008-03-09 07:37:04 PM
CORRECTION TO PREVIOUS POST: The railroad is 1142 km,or 710 miles long. A 5-day journey would average 5.91 mph, or 140 miles/day.

Bicycle definitely faster.
