I'm kinda on the fence about this sort of thing.

On the one hand, I love cats and dogs. On the other hand, I live a priveleged western life in a place where cats and dogs are never a plague or a pestilence and where stray cats and dogs don't roam the streets eating carrion and garbage. My society is wealthy enough that the (relatively) few dogs and cats which are rounded up and killed are treated gently. I can appreciate how that's not the case in a lot of the world.

Really? You can "appreciate" that the fourth largest economy in the world can't afford euthanasia? A farking bullet would even be kinder. You can "appreciate" that? They're spending $40 billion to host the farking Olympics (as well as $67 billion more to host other games in 2010), of which this program is a part, yet they can't afford to humanely euthanise some animals.

Stupid Chinese. In medieval Europe, cities imported cats from the Middle East because they eliminated rats, whose fleas were spreading a little nastiness called the Bubonic Plague.

Thats is what I was thinking.
I realize that they are most likely feeding on garbage but they also have to be doing SOMETHING to control the rodent population.
If the cats aren't eating it, guess who will be?

This is shocking from the same country that is almost single handedly destroying the tiger population, has 'entertainment' programs in which a hungry lion tears apart a goat...they raise a cross-breed raccoon-like animal used to line those hooded popular puffy jackets and of course, the old obvious one, they eat dogs.

At another, larger compound in Da Niu Fang village, the sound of cats wailing could be clearly heard coming from a cluster of tin-roofed sheds, but workers denied they were holding any cats.

"There are no cats here, go away. No one is allowed inside unless you have official permission," a security guard said.

Zee people on zee train are going on holiday!

Hmoob 2008-03-09 04:30:45 PM
So,

They're getting rid of the cats. Do you think just maybe the reason they have so many cats is because they have so much food (mice) to sustain a large stray cat population? What exactly do they expect will happen when all the cats are gone?

Stray cats are just an indicator of a dirty city. They aren't the root of the problem.

thejoz 2008-03-09 04:31:02 PM
You know, it saddens me enough that several million cats and dogs are put down in this country alone each year because of neglect and abandonment.

That is a tragedy. This is deplorable.

Fark the Chinese.

I would love it if they were to go to the trouble of spending all this money on the Olympics and then nobody shows up. The athletes boycott, and nobody goes to witness it.

Maybe that would send a message to the Chinese that they seriously need to clean up their act if they want the rest of the world to play nice with them.

i normally take interest in the olympics but not when they are in china for these types of reasons...if you have to "clean up" your act to make yourself look good for a few weeks you prolly shouldnt be having them...US included

Rats, actually but yes. I look forward to the inevitable img1.fark.net in a few months. I'm sure they'll be related to some deadly disease outbreak as a special bonus. Not that cats can't also be disease vectors (though SARS probably came from eating civet cats, which aren't cats), but totalitarian governments seem to use large, short-sighted hammers to deal with complex problems. They only succeed in creating new problems because no one thought the simplistic plan all the way through (see also: One Child policy, Three Gorges Dam).

Yup,it's a shame people think like this. I saw one idiot on a news show talking about global warming. He said the U.S. needs to do something. When asked about the Chinese, the guy said " Weeeelll, they can't afford to do it,so they shouldn't have to, it's the U.S.'s responsibility to do it,blah blah blah." . I'm sick of everyone feeling sorry for these people.

I knew there would be outraged cat-people in this thread, and I was not disappointed.

To those of you biatching about teh ebil China being cruel to stray cats, do you have _any_ idea how chickens are treated in large production (such as Tyson) facilities in the US? Do you have any idea the kind of shiat that gets done to coyotes here because they're "pests"?

Not that I condone the actions of the Chinese government here, but I'm not seeing why we shouldn't approach it the same way we do the crimes of our own society.
