I could say something about the propaganda value of awards like this in times of sinking morale, but I don't want to take away from this woman's accomplishments. It sounds like she earned it.

I bet that silver star will come in handy as she wakes up screaming from nightmares for the rest of her life.

War is awesome!

Yeah, why don't women work as hard as men do?

/the counter-point to it has something to do with ownership of a uterus

That's impressive, yes, but it really doesn't come anywhere close to other cases that have awarded the silver star.

Seems more fit for a bronze.

Mr. Xhin I guess three things come from Texas now.

I'm anti-war, but pro-soldier, so good for her.

(Also, proof that women have the balls to be on the front lines.)

Five guys. Kept going back under fire. Yeah, I'd say she earned it. Five times over.

She deserves it just for being stationed at Fort Lost in the Woods.

graeylin 2008-03-09 01:37:17 PM
technically, she is the 5th woman since WWII to earn a silver star. But that's semantics, it takes nothing away from her actions or heroism.

technicolor-misfit 2008-03-09 01:38:32 PM
ElLoco - That's an awesome woman there.

Let's not go overboard... Remember, "no matter how hot heroic she is, somebody somewhere is completely sick of her shiat."

No, if you actually read up it has more to do with the fact that females are not allowed into combat arms MOSs. Therefore, females are less likely to receive awards like this.

bmr68 [TotalFark] 2008-03-09 01:41:11 PM
Who cares about the politics. She did her job and her superiors nominated her for the medal.

graeylin: technically, she is the 5th woman since WWII to earn a silver star. But that's semantics, it takes nothing away from her actions or heroism.

FTFA: Four Army nurses in World War II were the first women to receive the Silver Star, though three nurses serving in World War I were awarded the medal posthumously last year, according to the Army's Web site.

Speaking of semantics...

And women are not allowed in combat arms mos due to lower standards required for women.

What a woman. Good to see the HERO tag used for what it is meant for.

My father earned 2 in Vietnam. Proud of him, proud of her.

Considering the rate that the US Military hands out medals I doubt a Silver Star has much value.

Fapinator 2008-03-09 01:57:04 PM
Maybe this should be the medal? (NSFW)
